From the Owners:
Tradewinds Charters Named Oregon’s Small Business of the Year
We’re excited to share some amazing news from all of us at Tradewinds Charters here in Depoe Bay, Oregon. Earlier this year, we were honored to be recognized as Oregon’s Small Business of the Year—a moment that reflects the hard work of our team, the loyalty of our guests, and the support of the community that has made our journey possible.
This recognition means the world to us—not just as owners, but as part of a business that’s proudly served the Oregon Coast for generations. It’s a celebration of everything we’ve built together and everyone who has helped us along the way.
Representing Oregon in Washington, D.C.
As part of the recognition, two of us traveled to Washington, D.C. in May for a national celebration hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration. We were honored to represent Oregon at the event and stand alongside other small businesses from around the country. While we didn’t walk away with the national title, the experience of sharing our story, learning from others, and connecting with entrepreneurs from every corner of the U.S. was unforgettable.
Carrying on a Coastal Tradition Since 1938
Tradewinds Charters has been a trusted name in Oregon Coast tourism since 1938. For over 85 years, we’ve introduced visitors to the thrill of deep sea fishing and the awe of whale watching along this breathtaking stretch of coast. That legacy is one we carry with deep pride—and one we’re committed to preserving and growing every day.
In 2024, we were also named Lincoln County’s Best Attraction, a title that speaks to the dedication of our entire team and the unforgettable experiences we strive to offer. Whether it’s helping a family reel in their first catch or watching the wonder in someone’s eyes as a gray whale breaches, we’re honored to be part of the memories people make here.
Our Values: Treat People Right, Every Time
At the heart of everything we do is a guiding belief: treat others the way you want to be treated. This value is what drives our business—from the way we greet guests and train our crew to how we manage every detail of our charters.
We know that people choose Tradewinds Charters to help create meaningful moments on the water. That’s why we prioritize safety, comfort, and friendly service on every trip. With experienced captains, knowledgeable staff, and a fleet of Coast Guard-certified vessels, we strive to make each outing both exciting and welcoming—for families, first-timers, and seasoned adventurers alike.
Committed to Ocean Stewardship
We love what we do, and we’re grateful for the ocean that makes it all possible. That’s why protecting it is a vital part of our mission. Our approach to sustainable tourism is grounded in a responsibility to the marine life we depend on—and the future generations who deserve to experience it, too.
Our guests often ask how they can help protect whales, fish, and ocean habitats. We share what we know, promote best practices for wildlife viewing, and support efforts that maintain the balance of our marine ecosystems. Whether it’s choosing responsible fishing practices or helping guests understand the importance of conservation, we believe every tour can be an opportunity to educate and inspire.
Supporting Our Community Through Donations
Being part of the Depoe Bay community means more to us than just running a business—it means giving back in ways that reflect our values and support the future of the Oregon Coast. That’s why we’ve built community giving directly into our operations.
Every booking with Tradewinds Charters includes a small, optional donation that helps fund two causes we deeply believe in: the Oregon Kelp Alliance, which works to protect and restore vital kelp forest ecosystems along our coastline, and Free Fishing Poles for Kids – Oregon Coast, a program dedicated to getting fishing gear into the hands of local children so they can safely and confidently enjoy time on the water.
These donations are completely optional—guests may opt out at checkout—but we’re proud to say that many choose to support these efforts alongside us. Together, we’re helping preserve the marine environments we depend on and pass down Oregon’s fishing traditions to the next generation.
Looking Ahead
Being named Oregon’s Small Business of the Year is a milestone we’re incredibly proud of, but it’s also just the beginning of the next chapter. We’re more committed than ever to delivering outstanding guest experiences, preserving our coastal environment, and continuing to serve as a trusted part of Oregon’s tourism story.
In the year ahead, we’re planning exciting updates, from expanded guest services, to the addition of a new boat to the fleet lovingly named Kingfisher in honor of Tradewinds most famous and iconic boats. We’re also working on ways to deepen our connection with local partners and create more opportunities for guests to learn, explore, and enjoy everything the Oregon Coast has to offer.
