Happy New Year again

Ocean forecast bad thru the weekend and thru the better part of next week

Hope that your New Year celebration tonight goes a whole lot better then the "complete bust" we had for the holiday ocean activities due to persistent bad ocean conditions. Things don't look any better into the 1st week post holiday period with heavy swells forecasted thru the period. When it gets better we and only Tradewinds Depoe Bay will let you know.

Date: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 13:27
Current Report:
Happy New Year to all of you Tradewinds faithful

Sorry about the weekend and New Years ocean weather forecast

All of the skippers and employees at Tradewinds Depoe Bay would like to wish all of you a very happy and prosperous New Year. We hope that means we will be seeing you, all of your relatives and friends and all of the new customers we expect to come our way this upcoming 2012 fishing and whale watch season.

We wish we had a better ocean forecast for you for the holiday weekend but it sounds terrible at best. The best day is Sunday and even that has a moderate swell and the winds predicted are forecasted to be moderate to heavy. It just sounds like a weekend to stay home and watch football games. We will let you know when things begin to moderate.

Date: Saturday, December 24, 2011 at 13:26
Current Report:
Merry Christmas from Tradewinds Depoe Bay

Sorry about the ocean weather forecast

Tradewinds would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and the hope for a safe and prosperous New Year. We are also sorry for this ocean forecast thru at least next Wednesday with heavy ocean swells in the forecast. If that holds we will not be doing any fishing or cruising until it subsides. Keep in touch here and we will let you know when the future forecast shows some improvement.

Date: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 14:02
Current Report:
1st look a the weekend forecast

The ocean weather outlook looks to be on the nasty side with rain at times with a growing swell up around the fifteen foot mark for the weekend. There is always the possibility of moderation but this time of year this type of ocean forecasts are commonplace. Hopefully after Christmas as we get towards New Years things will moderate for some good fishing days and whale watching.

Date: Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 19:24
Current Report:
Unsettled weather week coming up

Some real tough weather days coming towards us this upcoming week with some marginal days mixed in with them. Sounds like the next week is going to be day-to-day so keep in touch with the office if you have fishing or cruise plans with us thru at least Friday.

Date: Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 13:00
Current Report:
Weekend Whale Watching weather outlook

It looks a little om the "iffy side" for the weekend upcoming. Saturday is the best day looking forward with only a moderate swell but after that the swell grows and might be a period where we stay away from ocean activities. All of this can change so stay in touch with the office if you have plans to be with us this weekend and hope for a better forecast as we get a bit closer.

Date: Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 08:04
Current Report:
Sure had a ton of folks out whale watching Saturday

Nice day to cruise and with the whales beginning to show up there were lots of Tradewinds faithfuls jamming the cruise boats to get out there and see them. Watch the weather as this is the time of year that the southerly migration begins to happen. It is great to see these pods of whales in the migration pass by.

Date: Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 17:42
Current Report:
Work week weather for next week looking good

The ocean weather forecast for this next week is looking good thru at least Friday. We will get back with you as the weekend gets closer to give yo the weekend update. Make sure you bring that warm jacket as winter time cruising at times can be a bit on the chilly side.

Date: Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 15:29
Current Report:
Migratory whales announcing there arrival to Depoe Bay

It is a little bit early traditionally but the migratory flow of whales heading south past Depoe Bay appears to be beginning. Normally it is around the 15th to 20th of December but today there were a number of sightings. Lets just say it early, "the migration past Depoe Bay has begun". When the ocean is nice we will be making trips on weekdays when we have enough folks to go, weekends and all during the holidays. First trips of the day normally begin around the NOON hour. One and two hour trips are available.

Interested in a whale watch trip on a decent ocean? Try this weekend as the ocean weather report for several days now has held up and we are planning trips on both days starting around the NOON hour. War a warm coat and come down and cruise with the very best on the entire Oregon Coast.

Date: Monday, November 28, 2011 at 18:19
Current Report:
Saturday looks like a nice weekend whale watch day as of right now

There is some interest off of the the phones and the weather looks pretty good right now for Saturday so if interested give us a call. If I hear of any whale reports in the area I will pass them on to you during the week. Nice days in the winter can be few and far between so take advantage.

Date: Monday, November 28, 2011 at 13:26
Current Report:
Ocean weather looking better (but just a little)

Not sure exactly what days do look better in the next 5-6 days but there is some moderation showing on the forecasts. Call the office and leave a message for more details. Hopefully things will begin to get better for the upcoming holidays.

Date: Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 14:49
Current Report:
Just a weather update for you die-hards

Nothing really to report. Worst weather of the season so far as we are experiencing storm warnings three out of the last five days. Winds steady around 35 knots and gusting a whole lot higher then that along with that steady rain. Looks like this type of stuff with us at least thru the middle of next week.

Date: Monday, November 21, 2011 at 10:59
Current Report:
Another long bad weather week in front of us

Winer must be here not by date of year but by appearance. After a one day break from the elements on Sunday with a decent ocean day things have returned to winter normal. Looks like a real nasty ocean weather week in front of us. Hopefully by the Christmas Holidays where the whale migration begins in ernest things will improve some. We shall see and we will let you know on the best fishing and whale watch site with up to the minute news.

Date: Friday, November 18, 2011 at 17:40
Current Report:
Sunday just might be the day

You folks out there looking for a whale watch cruise things are looking up for a one day window that being Sunday. Tomorrow (Saturday) looks not-so-good but Sunday does look much better with a new series of stormy weather hitting the coast beginning early next week.

Date: Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 07:52
Current Report:
Whale watching not a good bet because of weather thru the weekend

Gale warnings, lots of wind, rain & heavy seas are the weather reports thru this weekend. Sounds like a nasty forecast and we will let you know when the ocean begins to moderate.

Date: Friday, November 11, 2011 at 07:59
Current Report:
Looks like not a good weekend or into next week for what watch cruises

It looked pretty good in the middle of the week for this weekend and then things changed abruptly as they do this time of year. Sounds like wet, windy with rough seas in the forecast. We will most certainly let you know when things start to improve.

Date: Monday, November 7, 2011 at 17:39
Current Report:
We still continue from shore to see a few whales out there

The weather for Saturday looks pretty good

Even though we are typically out of whales this time of year until around mid-December we still see them from time to time from the shoreline. So as long as the weather for Saturday continues to look good you might think about coming down and taking a trip out with us. We will keep you informed on the ocean weather as the week slips by.

Date: Friday, November 4, 2011 at 12:20
Current Report:
> Weather forecast not the best

We are open this winter on nice days

Holiday gift certificates on sale NOW

The ocean weather forecast all the way thru the middle of next week does not sound all that promising. Ocean weather sounds wet, windy at times with a rather large swell most days. Certainly sounds like our whale watch activities will not be taking place for the next 4-5 days at least.

Our office will be open this winter on nice days but we will be operating on limited office hours so if you stop by or call the office either try again or leave us a message. We will get back to you as we check phone messages daily. A good way if you need an answer quickly is leave us a message on this website inquiry link as it will be answered promptly.

Remember a great way to celebrate this coming holiday season is by giving one of our gift certificates for whale watch and or fishing trips. A great holiday gift for anyone on your gift list this season.

Looking kinda messy for a while

THe first extended messy looking ocean weather is here and appears it might be here for a while. We will keep you up-to-date. Stay tuned as winter might be peaking its head around the corner and heading our way.

Date: Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 12:48
Current Report:

Whale watching gets a day off today

The ocean considering what a dreary day it is is pretty nice but it is a very wet day with some more not so nice ocean weather approaching the area this next week. We will keep you up to date.

Date: Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 16:27
Current Report:
No whale watch cruises today

Just after the fishing boats came in and just before the whale watch boats were scheduled to go out the swell grew as well as the waves on the bar entrance to Depoe Bay so we cancelled all of the cruises for the day.

Date: Friday, October 28, 2011 at 13:41
Current Report:
No whales located today

Had one cruise out today but we were not able to locate any whales. Kind of a windy day out there and looking for spouts was not at all an easy venture which added to the difficulty. Somehow we know they are still there as they have been the past few days but today was not a good day to try to find them. The weekend is forecasted to be better.

Date: Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 14:23
Current Report:
There were whales out there...

...just not sure we saw them

The fishing boats saw whales about 30-35 fathoms offshore on there trips and it was reported to the cruise ships but not sure when they were out there what they saw? It was a beautiful ocean for cruising so lets just hope the folks onboard saw the whales as there was a nice bunch of them moving south.

Date: Monday, October 24, 2011 at 13:28
Current Report:
Whales a little on the scarce side this afternoon

About half way thru the trip we did have today the information was that the whales were not cooperating today. It is getting closer to that time when they leave the area for the Southern grounds down off the Baja area and we will be picking up that migrations as it gets in full run around the start of the Christmas holidays. We are hoping that there are still some around as it was pretty good this weekend from the info provided to me.

Date: Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 12:41
Current Report:
Whales still in the area

The whales are still here and there are multiple ones still feeding in the area. Historically sometime in the first part of November they should begin to leave the Depoe Bay area for the southern waters and then more going south around the Christmas holidays. The weather is holding so it is still a great time for viewing the feeding Gray whales.

Date: Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 17:34
Current Report:
Good weather thru the weekend

Sounds like we will have good cruise weather thru the weekend and with multiple whales in the area the past week it should be good whale watching if you were planning to come down and see us.

Date: Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 14:59
Current Report:
Whales North & Whales South

Good weather thru this upcoming weekend

The whales are still here and they are in all directions that we go to view them. Great weather is forecasted all the way thru this next weekend so far so it is a great time to come down with beautiful coast weather to see the whales. Tradewinds Depoe Bay the very best in getting you to the whales and providing the best camera shots for you to take.

Date: Monday, October 17, 2011 at 18:37
Current Report:
No whale watch activity today

The ocean close to the bar crossing was a just a little to messy so we decided to for-go any whale watch trips for the day. Tomorrow is suppose to be much better.

Date: Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 13:11
Current Report:
Whales just a little on the north side of the city today

We did have a couple of whales for the folks on board today to view and they were out about three-quarters of a mile and just a little bit north of the city and the harbor. They put on a nice show and the Tradewinds folks had a great time.

Date: Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 14:41
Current Report:
Three Gray whales South and Humpback whales North

Which direction to go? If you want to see Gray whales you just go South a quarter mile or so but if you have a faster cruise boat then you go North about four miles and you can see Humpback whales swimming. As we come to the end of this whale watch season it sure is good right now. The weather is real nice and so are the performing whales.

Date: Friday, October 14, 2011 at 15:07
Current Report:
Tons of whale watchers today

We didn't weigh them but it sure looked like lots of people on the cruise boats today for TW as we ran three of those cruises out there today. The whales did not disappoint either with some nearby just about a quarter of a mile to the North side of Depoe Bay. "Whale tail shots" galore made it a good time for the folks on board.

Date: Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 12:25
Current Report:
Good to go

It is actually pretty decent right now as of NOON Thursday to head out there as just a few bumps in the ocean road are still out there. Should be real nice by tomorrow and the weather report looks good into the first of next week. The whales are still here so come down and get your last glance at them before they begin to leave the area for the southerly migration (historically around November 1st).

Date: Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 18:11
Current Report:
Weekend sounds GREAT with whales still in the area

Nothing happening today but Friday thru the weekend sounds like a very decent ocean weather forecast. The whales are still there so come down and see them as it is getting close within the next few weeks that they will begin their southern departure.

Date: Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 13:41
Current Report:
Rough ocean once again today

Another rough ocean day and another no whale watching day as well. Friday thru the weekend looks like a pretty good chance for improved weather.

Date: Monday, October 10, 2011 at 13:45
Current Report:
No...Not today

Just to rough today but we are keeping a close eye at the end of the week as things look to be improving by then.

Date: Sunday, October 9, 2011 at 15:19
Current Report:
YES we will be open this winter

Well maybe not every day when the wind is blowing forty knots, the ocean looks like it is upside down and the rain is coming down sideways but we will be open on those NICE days. Everyone in this industry closes doors when the weather is like that but we will have fishing trips and whale watching trips in the winter especially during the holidays. Believe it or not sometimes we have real nice sunny weather here during that time. You can ALWAYS leave us a phone message and we will get back to you ASAP. Remember another way 24/7 (well close anyhow) is leave a message or a question for us over the Tradewinds website inquiry system and you will get an answer within hours sometimes minutes. You can also make those reservations over the website REZ system and WE will get in touch with you. So keep us in mind this winter as we have boats available and ready to go.

Date: Sunday, October 9, 2011 at 15:08
Current Report:
Much to rough today

A very rough ocean arrived mid-morning canceling all afternoon what watch trips for the day. Looking pretty nasty for the next four days but Thursday looks somewhat marginal and Friday looks really good as of now. We will keep you informed.

Date: Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 17:12
Current Report:
Beautiful day & whales in the area

Lots of cruises today and lots of whales to view. I heard there were two out there who made their dives at exactly the same time over and over and the tail shots were in perfect unison. Quite a site I am sure.

Date: Friday, October 7, 2011 at 16:35
Current Report:
WHALES IN THE AREA...STILL

Had only the one whale watch trip today I believe but it was a real good one with lots of performing whales to watch. The whales should be in the area thru the end of this month where they then will take off and join the southerly migration.

Date: Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 16:17
Current Report:
No-Go for today but should be firing up tomorrow

The ocean outside the 1st buoy looked OK for today but as the swell was diminishing inside it was still a little rough on the bar and the first half mile. All should be hopefully better for tomorrow into the weekend.

Date: Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 12:10
Current Report:
We did get a WW trip out today

The swell was suppose to be higher and the day was suppose to be a bit windy with rain and not much of either showed up. The ocean was not flat but was more then OK to cruise with periodic bright sun breaks showing up. Not sure of the sightings as sometimes this time of year they are hard to find out the results. Sounds like forecasted OK weather for Friday and Saturday.

Date: Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 12:43
Current Report:
No-Go for whale watching today

Another pretty rough day out there so another day we sit tide to the boards. Friday the next day by the forecast it look do-able. Will keep you informed.

Date: Monday, October 3, 2011 at 13:24
Current Report:
Weathered out today

Not a nice day with big waves preventing the boats from getting out there. Sounds a little funky for the nice few days. We will keep you clued in so stay tuned folks.

Date: Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 15:13
Current Report:
Not sure we ran any whale watch trips today

...weather turned for the worst in the afternoon

Might not be any whale watch trips for the next few days as the storm system we have been watching for the last few days has arrived. We will keep you informed.

Date: Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 20:45
Current Report:
Good sighting today on the whale watch fronts

Had a good day whale watching and had multiple whale watch trips out to the South where the critters were hanging out. Sounds like decent weather again tomorrow so should be a good day.

Date: Friday, September 30, 2011 at 13:58
Current Report:
Did not hear the whale watch report today but I am sure it was a good one

Not sure what happened out there today on the 2 or 3 whale watch adventures we had today but I am going to think it was a good day for viewing the whales. This morning the fishing boats on the way out saw Gray whales out in front of the harbor a little on the north side and there was also a pod of four Orca (killer) whales out there as well. Included in that pod was one very little juvenile Orca whale who more then likely was not so far away from just being a new born. Quite the small little guy. They were obviously on the HUNT as they were inside the entrance buoy looking around the reefs. Beware all the sea lions and seals in the area !

Date: Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 14:51
Current Report:
Beautiful whales and there were whales

Actually do not know that totally for sure but I heard as the boats were going out that one of the iifshing boats coming in told someone that there was a whale close by. Sooooo,, I am assuming that we saw whales. It was sure a beautiful day and ocean to see the whales on this mid-wee k day. There were tons of folks in town as in three trips we have taken out close to 90 people. Good day........

Date: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 17:10
Current Report:
Good weather for whale watching thru Saturday

Sounds like some nice ocean weather for the area thru Saturday with a rising swell for Sunday. Make your plans for the next three days. The whales are out there.

Date: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 10:59
Current Report:
Much to rough for whale watching today

Nineteen foot swells right on the beach area today has the buoys under water so obviously no tours for this day. Sounds like the next nice day will be Thursday. See ya then.

Date: Monday, September 26, 2011 at 12:15
Current Report:
The whales will still be there in a few days after the ocean storm settles down

Sounds like Thursday will be the next good day to get out on the water for you fall fishing enthusiasts as we will have unsettled ocean weather between now and thru Wednesday. We will keep you up-to-date and speak with you daily.

Date: Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 10:03
Current Report:
Going out on a limb today even before the whale watch schedule begins....

...There won't be any today

Still a few hours away from todays first scheduled trip but I think I am safe to inform any of the folks looking at this who might want to see whales today that you will have to do it from the shoreline. Much to rough today to take anyone out there so hope for a better day coming up. (It might be later next week also)

Date: Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 15:43
Current Report:
Depoe Bay (or) is Tradewinds the Whale Watching Capital of the World?

Today that was a good question that was easy to answer. For this day anyhow Tradewinds Depoe Bay was the Whale Watching Capital of the World with boat load after boat load of folks heading out to see the Gray whales. We did not disappoint either. We had six of those fellas South of Depoe Bay a few miles and we were all down there watching them and the folks on board having a great time. Everyone rushed to Depoe Bay today because there is a rumor of the start of a weather system to effect the area tomorrow so many of tomorrows customers were here today. The city was loaded with people to begin with so it was a great day for several hundred passengers today aboard the many vessels out there with us this afternoon.

Date: Friday, September 23, 2011 at 19:53
Current Report:
Whale sightings today for sure

Good day on the whale watch cruises with several whales to the South and at least one to the North. The big question was which way to GO???

Date: Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 12:21
Current Report:
Whale watch excursions cancelled for the day

No ocean activities today as the ocean swell is up over 12 foot and is very rough out there. Hopefully tomorrow brings better conditions.

Date: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 17:20
Current Report:
Big Swell.....

...but we can still find the whales

Funny day as the weather was just perfecto. Bright sunny day with NO wind and really a warm day for late in September with temps in the 70's. Along about 11am in the morning and the ocean swell began to grow and we have 12-13 foot walls of water out there. Before the real big stuff got here we got in one amazing whale watch trip with bunches of people on board. Lots and lots of whales put on a great show south of the city area about two miles. The whales cooperated by being outside in the water where the swell was not curling over. Good for them as they know the Tradewinds fleet was out there admiring them.

Date: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 05:56
Current Report:
Lots and lots of whales in the area today

Quite a large group of whales congregating in our area now with a large number of them south of the city feeding in the shallow waters. The only question today was which whale we wanted to watch?

Date: Monday, September 19, 2011 at 17:02
Current Report:
Rough...Rough...Rough

Too rough to takes boats out today so back in action tomorrow as the weather forecast looks good to be back in action Tuesday.

Date: Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 15:16
Current Report:
Two whales at Cape Foulweather to watch today

"OR"

A wedding in Whale Cove to watch

Take your pick

Talk about a full purpose charter company. We fish, we catch, we entertain, we show whales and we marry. No one else can do all of this. We even supply the pastor for the wedding ceremony. Actually one of our skippers is a ordained minister. It makes it legal and everything (imagine that!!).

Oh YES, the whales...

We diid have two just a little South of the wedding and they also put on a good show. We sell this as a combo trip if you wish. The question is where was the better show????

Date: Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 15:04
Current Report:
I know there were whales out there today

Not any specific information available but when coming back in from the morning fishing-go-round I heard some of the smaller boats talking about the whales in the area. So with a decent ocean it must have been a good day on the whale watch front.

Date: Friday, September 16, 2011 at 18:40
Current Report:
Whales out there again today

Not a whole lot of information available but we ran three trips out there to take the folks out to see the whales and we were successful on all counts I am told. No surprise there as no one finds them like we do . The whales have made there way back into the area after an absence of a few weeks but this past week we have been seeing more and more of them returning so it must mean that the feed is back. Can't you hear the dinner bell ringing.......?

Date: Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 16:10
Current Report:
Good whale sighting day

It was a good day for watching whales with several in the area down around Gull Rock and a few more right up here by the harbor a little on the North side. Good performing whales and lots of cruise people watching them.

Date: Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 17:28
Current Report:
Whales out there again today

Nice day on the ocean today and not a ton of information to report but there were whales out there and the folks on board about 3-4 trips today had a fun time watching them..

Date: Monday, September 12, 2011 at 15:19
Current Report:
Whales out there again today

The whales were down between Gull Rock and Otter Rock today which is about 2-miles to the South of the harbor and they put on a great show for the folks on board today. We should have whales all the way thru October before they head out to pick up their other bothers and sisters on the way down to the warmer waters of Mexico. So plenty of time still left to see some of our resident whales feeding off of Depoe Bay.

Date: Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 15:00
Current Report:
No whale report today

The ocean was pretty nice this afternoon even though it was sorta a gray overcast afternoon. No one reported in with a whale watch report so I don't have one for you today. We did see whales yesterday however.

Date: Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 19:24
Current Report:
Whales in the area today

For the first time in quite a few days you could actually see what was going on out in the ocean as the fog though thick in the fishing morning hours dissipated by 10:30am and we had a clear day from there on in. Then we were able to find whales just North of the city so it turn out to be a great clear day.

Date: Friday, September 9, 2011 at 14:23
Current Report:
Not sure we even took a whale watch trip out there this afternoon

Because if we did I am sure that the old adage "hand in front of your face" and you couldn't see it saying would have been well understood today. Tomorrow thru the weekend and especially into the first part of next week is suppose to be better as the valleys begin to cool down. Heat in the valley produces fog over here a good part of the time.

Date: Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 19:38
Current Report:
First whale watch trip late in the day

....too foggy to go any earlier

Not sure the results of our one and only whale watch trip that left the docks at 3:30pm as the fog was so thick today that we cancelled all of the trip times before then Not sure what the result were but it did clear out (the fog that is) late in the afternoon so a least the folks got to see where they were going while they were out there.

Date: Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 17:07
Current Report:
Foggy once Again

It was so foggy out there today that the only place they could find nice water, visibility and sea life was in Whale Cove. So we went in there where it was warm, no wind, no fog and lots of harbor seals and birds to look at. Once you crossed out in the ocean it was pea soup fog with very little visibility. We will try again tomorrow.

Date: Monday, September 5, 2011 at 13:24
Current Report:
Ocean fog not nearly as bad today

Lots of whales offshore to see

Actually writing this at the time the ocean whale tours are in progress for the day but there are many whales just a few miles offshore. They are all feeding in a huge bait ball out there many miles long. There are Gray whales and Humpback whales out there having a huge supper.

Very foggy and lots of fog lovers

You could not see very well in the harbor let alone out in the ocean. The reason that is important is that we had lots of potential whale watchers wanting to go anyway to go out and see the foggy ocean. Four loaded trips today out into an ocean that visibility was less then 100 feet. They just loved it but I don't thing they saw any whales. They did see lots of sea lions on the buoys and other things we could get close to.

The cruise boats I do not believe saw any whales today but the salmon boats in the morning hours saw several more pods of Blue whales and a number of Humpback whales as well. They were quite a ways offshore however and probably was not a good day to take cruisers that far offshore with all of the wind and choppy waters we had today. Tomorrow is another day.

More Blue whales??

We were off and running on more ocean whale cruises today at the Noon hour with high hopes of more Gray whales to be seen like it has been the past few days. Hopefully they are back. Another report just offshore was that more Blue whales in the area again. Hard to imagine what is going on with the Blue whales as you can go a lifetime without ever seeing one of them and now the past two weeks we have had 4-5 days with sightings. Interesting occurrences here at Tradewinds...

For the 2nd day in a row we had Gray whales in our area which (hopefully) is a good sign for the rest of this summer. It has been a good summer even though for a week or two there in August the Gray whales were absent but we had quite a few of those days where the Blue whales were here and here lately the Humpbacks are around. So every summer probably will never be perfect as this has not been but all in all still a 90% chance for seeing whales this summer on an average is still pretty positive to be telling the folks looking for whale trips.

The Tradewinds whale watch fleet will take you out to where the whales are and not caring to much about a little more fuel being burned. Why you ask???

Because the Blue whales are still here frockling from about a mile North of the city area to about a half mile South of the city area. Why??? No one knows but it has been spectacular here the past few days and one other day late last week. No telling if and when they will be leaving but it has been fabulous. but there were more BLUE WHALES yesterday

In the absence of the Gray whales which I was told yesterday that we ned some winds to come in to gather up the whale food which in turn will bring the whales back into the area. So if you like whales hope for wind.

In the absence of the Gray whales we were blessed this week with two days of sightings of the very rarely seen Blue Whales. These guys are as spectacular as it gets as they run 75-100 feet in length. They throw a spout it looks like possibly 100 feet in the air and are breath taking to watch. No telling if they will be around today but it has been a rare blessing that many people who live along the coast all there lives never have had the opportunity to see one. Tradewinds was the first to spot them and now it has happened twice in a week. What might be the chances of that???

No Gray whales again today

Another Oregon Coast beautiful cruise day

Sorry but the bad water if that is the case (dirty greenish brown water) is still with us. Have no idea if that is the problem with the Gray whales being gone but is a good place to start. It sure is affecting the fishing. So we cruised the sights of the Oregon Coast and saw the marine mammals, sea birds, etc.

The BIG surprise today was the sighting of two Blue whales. They are if not the largest living thing on earth they are certainly close. They grow close to 100 feet long and put up a spout that was rising well over 50 feet high. It was a spectacular thing to see as I have never seen one before. Not one today but two of them fairly close to shore about 3 miles offshore. One of the whale watch vessels was called in and got over 250 photos of the animals. Once in lifetime viewing. If you think you are finally out of them and won't see anymore just wait a day or so even hours. The food for the whales will return and so will the whales.

Whale trips today thru the day

We ran whale trips right up to the 4pm hour today and had whales on every trip. Most of the day they were right out in front of the harbor so the passengers got a full hour of whale viewing and very little travel time. In the summer we run mostly 1-hr trips as the whales are so close and we are on them so quickly. For a larger group who want the 2-hr trip we still run them from time to time. The 2-hr trips are normally reserved for the winter and the spring migrations as they are further offshore and takes longer to get out to them. So today was another great day with the whales putting on good shows for the passengers.

Three loaded Tradewinds whale watch adventures today to see the whales which were right outside the channel entrance. One trip the boats cleared the sea wall and made an immediate left hand turn to the port side (thats nautical talk). They were really close today. They were also feeding to the north and the south of the city so plenty of whales to view.

We are also seeing lots of different sea birds and of course the ever present sea lions and harbor seals. Some of the folks who fish hate those guys but they are rather cute and are really very good at what they do which is stealing fishermen's fish after they hook "em. They have to eat also. That is there home out there so if you look at it in a practical manner we are invading their space. Now if a sea lion tried to come into my house then I would be justified to be mad at him (or her). Anyhow if you have even seen a sea lion steal a salmon right behind a fishing boat when it is being reeled in it is quite the sight and then surfaces and chews it right in full view. Would that make you mad??? Results of the survey tomorrow night!!!

They are probably south as well but no need to go down there when we have them right in the general Depoe Bay area. We have lots of room as we have multiple boats ready to take you out and see the whales. No one does it better then Tradewinds with our very clean smooth running vessels

Oh YES, whales to be seen

We shortly will be starting our 3rd trip of the day at 2pm and have had full boats on the first two and expect the same for the third.

Lots of sunshine, nice ocean and whales putting on great shows. We have had Humpbacks and Orca whales seen periodically the past few days also. They are no where near as dependable as the Gray whales but the chance is there this time of year.

Great whale watching with Tradewinds today as we had full boats taking the holiday whale watchers out to see some great performing whales on a beautiful ocean. We have plenty of boats and plenty of room for all of you on the "best in the West", Tradewinds Depoe Bay.

Much nicer ocean today and whales to be seen

The ocean as compared to yesterday is much-much nicer and we are currently watching two whales put on a good show on the North side of Depoe Bay up off of Government Point which is about a half mile to the North of the city center. Reports of a few more was the word a little on the south side as well. Good summertime whale watching.

Whales immediately out in front of the harbor on the Tradewinds voyages today

Interesting that sometimes the boat leaves the harbor makes a right or left hand turn immediately and watches the whales. The people were also watching the whales from the cliffs around the Depoe Bay harbor area. Not anything like being on the water right next to the whale but they get to see a spout from high above. It is all cool to see a giant ocean mammal just the same from any vantage point. Another good day for watching whales.

The past two days we had one day without whales and yesterday with just one. That was a strange occurance as we have had multiple whales in the area for over a moth before that. Well they are all back. Probably around a half dozen graced our passengers today but they only go to see a few of them each trip. You had to make a decision which way to go. They were North and South and not enough time to go both directions. It was a great day to be here for whale watching.

The whale with No friends

Early this afternoon on the whale watch trips we had just one lone whale in the area swimming around and feeding. One whale for the folks to see is better then none I guess but several short of what has been in the area the past few weeks. That will change as they begin to venture back into the area. They find one good feeding hole and stay around that area for a while and then come back to the old stomping grounds off of Depoe Bay where historically there is much food to be eaten. Our lone whale was a good performing one.

Sorry folks but the report is missing today. I think however it was not a real good day as I did notice whale boats running all over the place looking for whales in every direction. They do make themselves had to find at times. Tomorrow they will probably be back in the area putting on good shows. One thing that has improved is the number of sea lions in the area now. They are in plentiful supply if you like sea lions. They are fun to look at. Probably they are showing up now in large numbers because the salmon are starting to show up. They like a good salmon meal.

Everybody looking for whales today and they were pretty much right out front

The whales were really playing hide and seek today at least from the folks looking for them. Most of the boats found them eventually but for most of the day the strange thing was they were pretty much right out in front of the harbor and just a little on the North side. The day before there were so many in the area that the cruise boats were scurrying around looking here and there today and they were just congregated in one place all day. It was a fun day of whale watching. By the way we also had some Humpback whales spotted yesterday moving North along the beach area so we should be seeing those guys for a month or so as they migrate by our area.

There were lots of whales very close by as the report was that they started down south in the morning hours and up to a half dozen were spotted down there feeding. By the time the late morning came around and the cruise boats took to the waters they had moved up at least most of them to right out in front of the harbor about a half mile out. Whales everywhere today but you had to go North to find them

A few of the Tradewinds fishing boats heading North this morning were seeing multiple whales in pods from about a mile North of Depoe Bay all the way up to the Lincoln City area about six nautical miles North of that. There was also a pod of Orca whales heading South during the fishing trip time. They seemed to be hard to find in the morning hours by some of the whale watch boats? When the afternoon whale watch boats went out they ran up to where they were spotted in the morning and found them easily. Must have been a morning thing or glare or something that was hiding them from the tour boats. Funny things happen out there from time to time.

Whaling good again today

It certainly appears like we have those resident whales here as it has been several weeks in a row now I believe that we have had good whale sightings on our whale trips. They are being seen at the places where they feed in the summer and they wouldn't stick around unless there was food in the area. So with that in mind Tradewinds has the best whale watch trips on the coast beginning some days at the 11am hour and every day by the NOON hour. Check out our coupon link for some discounts on the cleanest boats on the coast and the most experienced skippers.

Also a word that our sea lion population has finally returned from wherever sea lions go and they are inhabiting the buoys out in front of Depoe Bay. They are always fun to see and make for great photos. I assume there return means that there are some salmon around the area. I am sure it is the lions favorite food as they steal it from the fisherman. That is worth the price of admission to see a salmon on a hook only to have half of it gone when it gets to the boat. Some folks might not find that all that amusing.

I just hope the many folks who took whale watch trips with us today were able to track some of them down. Nice ocean and beautiful blue sky day here in Depoe Bay.

Everything delayed 24 hours including the wedding

No whale watching today as the ocean is very windy today so we had to cancel our whale cruises for the day. We even had a wedding at sea today we also had to put off till tomorrow. The Royal wedding today in England had nice weather and we will have it for tomorrow.

No whale watching activities today

After a nice beginning to the morning tuned into a downpour with rain into the middle of the afternoon. Now it is beginning to clear up but to late for any whale cruises today. Should be getting back into the action tomorrow and certainly by the weekend with good and steady improving weather predicted.

Date: Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 12:49
Current Report:
Better but not better enough

The ocean is better but needs to be better yet to take families and such out on the ocean to view whales. It is terribly windy out there and lots of white caps to make it not very likely to see whales or view them very well even if we would be lucky enough to find them. So we stayed home. We always try to make the best decisions for our guests as far as being successful whether it is fishing or whale watching.

Friday thru the weekend looks like very much improved ocean weather so make your plans for those days.

Ocean weather changing

Does not look like a nice day out in front of Depoe Bay today as the wind chop is growing by the minute and the wind is howling. Not a nice day to be out there....reserved for only the brave at heart.

Happy Easter everyone from Tradewinds-Depoe Bay

Whales in the area today

Multiple whales in the area and again they were in close to the shoreline. That means from past information passed down that they are more then likely feeding in the area and they would not be here if there was not food to chew on. Hopefully we have a few of the local guys in town and will be around thru the summer. Sounds like decent weather for Easter Sunday.

Current Report:
No whale report this afternoon I could find but....

quite a few critters around the shallows this morning.

The wind came up and the waters became a little choppy it looked like this afternoon but this morning we had quite a number of whales stretched all the way from 3-4 miles south of the harbor to 7-8 miles north. They were all sighted in the shallow waters which hopefully means they are feeding and remaining in our area since they obviously found some good tasting morsels to chew on. It is that time of year when some of the locals might be showing up.

Date: Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 15:07
Current Report:
Thar be whales

Well the whales after a few days absence showed up today as we had three of them in more shallow water feeding off one of the points here in the area. That is a good sign as it means some of the whales whether migrating still or not are stopping off to feed. That would mean there is feed in the area. Hopefully they will call this home and stay around for say 4-5 moths.

Same as yesterday's excuse

It does appear that the northerly migration is just about over and now we wait till early May begin to see some of our resident whales begin to show. Until then things will be a little on the hit and miss side. We might go a week or so with good sightings and then a lull for a number of days. We will keep you informed.

Date: Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 15:16
Current Report:
Whale watching slow today

We might be in that in-between time where the main group of northerly migrating whales as get to the end of April have gone by and now we wait for the stragglers which include the cows and the newly born calves. They should be along very shortly. Also we are looking for the first arrivals of our resident whales which historically begin their arrival sometimes in May. Fear not....there are great days here to come thru the rest of spring into the summer months.

Not totally sure but the whales were around today I believe?

There were whales in the morning that the fishing boats saw and from was observed in watching the whale watch boats all together in one place in the afternoon which normally means they found something. Beautiful weather and calm seas for the rest of the week.

The weather this weekend thru at least the middle of next week looks bright with virtually no swell on the ocean and that means great fishing and whale watching. Maybe, just maybe spring is about ready to kick ol' man winter out the door. It is the first good sign so far so & we are hoping

We will be weathered out today AGAIN but there is good news on the horizon or even closer then the horizon. Friday (tomorrow) looks much better then today and the weekend into the middle of next week according to the extended marine forecast looks really nice. One boat out looking for whales....

....from the latest information not any luck today

You know even Tradewinds has those days once in a while and we are not afraid to report it when it happens. Not much luck on finding whales today as it being a bit windy on a decent ocean still hampered our efforts. There are 25,000 of these critters that paddle by here on this northerly migration from the Mexican waters to the northern waters in Alaska and during that time there are holes in their migration runs. When that happens they are just not found on some of our trips. We are about 95% and above successful and today was one of those days in that 5%. Some days you will not see them on a first trip and then the 2nd trip of the day they are everywhere. Sorry folks....

Too rough to whale watch today but it sure is a beautiful sunny day. Some unsettled weather from time to time for the rest of the week so it will be day to day as decisions are made on if we can go or not. We will try to keep you informed.

It's early in the day but probably a wash of our whale watch activities for this day

The fishing boats stayed tied to the dock so I expect the same thing will occur for the whale watch activities for Sunday as well. The wind, rain and rough waters returned this morning and it probably will be quite on the "iffy" side for the next few days. We will keep you updated.

Five packed whale watch trips out to see the whales today

Over a hundred and twenty-five folks packed the Tradewinds whale watch boats and ventured out finally on a beautiful ocean to see the migrating Gray whales. See whales is exactly what they did. Many pods of whales were going by today and it was a great day for the many folks on board. Whale watching should be good thru the summer now into the late fall. Even after the northerly migration is over here in three weeks or so we should be graced with our resident whales showing up and even some Orca whales that seem to show around mid-May into June. Come on down and join the fun.

Weird ocean today. The swell which was predicted to go down never did so we were stuck with a rough ride out to the first buoy. Whale watching for the day more then likely cancelled Nothing from anyone official on this next statement but I am willing to make a guess that any whale watch activities for this day (Monday) have been cancelled. The ocean has no swell so to speak but is very wet, very windy and tons of wind chop. Does not make for whale watching FUN!. Will let you know AGAIN when the latest in a two month long series of storms comes to an end.

Good whale watching today

The whale watching was really good the first couple of trips but unsure about the final trip as no information was available. The whales were in bunches in groups of 2-4 the first couple of trips we heard which provided some good camera shots for the folks on board. They were not very far offshore as the spouts were visible from the shoreline but of course much better up close on the boats. They were about a mile or so offshore. Three trips today and full boat loads for all three trips.

Tradewinds whale watch bonanza

Over 200 whale watch enthusiasts boarded our vessels today and had a great time viewing the northerly migration whales as they were running north only about a mile or two offshore. The ocean really cooperated for us today despite the weather forecast and all onboard had a great time. Lots of whales and lots of fun. Should be good migratory whale watching clear thru the end of April. Come down and join in on the fun with Tradewinds the Oregon coasts #1 whale watch charter organization.

the boats got out

We had a quick hitter heavy storm hit the area around 10am and then an hour later it was all gone. Not sure what the results were but will try to get back with you later on that.

The folks obviously know where to go for whale watching....Tradewinds

Today was a terrific day on the water with lots of whales both on the migration routes offshore and inshore next to the shoreline as well. Our boats today were running solidly from 11am till 4pm taking out over 150+ people all told ( I lost count) and the sightings were just great. The ocean was flat and NO rain to speak of except for a late afternoon shower which lasted just a couple of minutes. Not even enough to get you wet. Another huge day on target for tomorrow but fear not as we have plenty of boats to get as many of you out there who want to go in a comfortable non-crowded condition. The best boats, the cleanest boats, and the fastest trip out to where the whales are...only @ Tradewinds Depoe Bay.

Hard to find those guys today

Rainy and windy and semi-choppy out there. Put that together makes finding whales a difficult task and it was today. The wind blows down the spouts and the rain decreases visibility as well. It just was not a good day. Not sure exactly what the final score for today was on spotting whales but it surely was not like yesterday sightings which were great. Tomorrow will be different.

A nice forecast for the 1st day of the week turned out not to be the case is it is windy, wet and moderately rough on the ocean waters. Suppose to better tomorrow (so they say).

Good whale watching today...not great but good

The ocean was real nice and then the rains came about half way into the trips lowering the visibility. The whales were found here and there but not as much as they were at the start of the trips. No word on the later afternoon trips how they were going. The whales are out there about 3-4 miles offshore and were out there most of the morning where the fishing boats saw them and then in the early afternoon. There are lulls in their migration as they pass by Depoe Bay but we can normally find them during the trips.

Whales-Whales-Whales

The skipper of our whale watch boat today made a dry humor comment about the sightings being there were more whales to watch then passengers on his vessel. It is a Monday, a few weeks still before the spring breaks begin so it is normal to have small loads on the weekday trips. There were ten passengers on this trip so that would mean that they saw at least how many whales? Boy, is that GREAT northerly migration whale watching. They are here !!!

Whales and ore Whales

If there was any doubt that the northerly migration was upon us came true today with a 2nd day of many-many whales offshore from Depoe Bay making their swing up thru our area. Great sightings for all the folks on board so it is the time for the next six weeks or so if you want to come down and witness this historic migration of the Gray whales. It is the oldest migration known to man. You can witness it "ONLY" at Tradewinds Depoe Bay.

There was one whale out around 40 fathoms in the morning and another in real shallow about 2 miles south of Depoe Bay also in the morning. Do you think we could find them in the afternoon? Not today... At least after a few weeks of down time there are a few starting to show on the northerly migration already. Real good sighting are just a week or so away.

Nice day on tap for Saturday

We are getting closer to the historical start of the Northern migration so there might be a few around out there who got out of the Mexican waters first. It will be a bright sunny day for a cruise so with more bad weather moving in for Sunday and the first part of next week Saturday is the time.

A good weekend on the horizon

The whale sightings were sparse this past weekend as we are in-between the southerly and northerly migrations. They have shown up early in the past and you might just want to take advantage of the nice weather forecasted right now for the weekend. We will keep you up to date on any whale sightings information that comes our way. We did get out today but not a good whale day

We did get out on some cruises today but the southerly migration is obviously over as we await for the round trip of the whales when they come back this way on their northerly stint. Historically that begins around the middle of March so stay tuned for the reports.

The weekend is looking a little "iffy"right now but sure is looking better then what we have gone thru the past few days. Southerly migration stragglers still going by....

Northerly migration begins mid-March

The Southerly migration is mostly over by this time of the year but there are still a few stragglers going by from time to time. Better if you have a little flexibility in your whale watch schedule to wait till mid-March as that is when we will begin to see them coming back the other way with the cows and calves following behind in late April into May. We will then start to see the local guys begin to drop off and spend the late spring and summer with us beginning in the later part of May thru October. We have the nicest cruise boats for you to feel comfortable and enjoy the whales in their natural environment off our coastline. Make plans to sail with us in 2011.
