Happy New Year again
Ocean forecast bad thru the weekend and thru the better part of next week
Hope that your New Year celebration tonight goes a whole lot better then the "complete bust" we had for the holiday ocean activities due to persistent bad ocean conditions. Things don't look any better into the 1st week post holiday period with heavy swells forecasted thru the period. When it gets better we and only Tradewinds Depoe Bay will let you know.
Date: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 13:27
Happy New Year to all of you Tradewinds faithful
Sorry about the weekend and New Years ocean weather forecast
All of the skippers and employees at Tradewinds Depoe Bay would like to wish all of you a very happy and prosperous New Year. We hope that means we will be seeing you, all of your relatives and friends and all of the new customers we expect to come our way this upcoming 2012 fishing and whale watch season.
We wish we had a better ocean forecast for you for the holiday weekend but it sounds terrible at best. The best day is Sunday and even that has a moderate swell and the winds predicted are forecasted to be moderate to heavy. It just sounds like a weekend to stay home and watch football games. We will let you know when things begin to moderate.

Merry Christmas from Tradewinds Depoe Bay
Sorry about the ocean weather forecast
Tradewinds would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and the hope for a safe and prosperous New Year. We are also sorry for this ocean forecast thru at least next Wednesday with heavy ocean swells in the forecast. If that holds we will not be doing any fishing or cruising until it subsides. Keep in touch here and we will let you know when the future forecast shows some improvement.
Date: Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 14:02
1st look a the weekend forecast
The ocean weather outlook looks to be on the nasty side with rain at times with a growing swell up around the fifteen foot mark for the weekend. There is always the possibility of moderation but this time of year this type of ocean forecasts are commonplace. Hopefully after Christmas as we get towards New Years things will moderate for some good fishing days and whale watching.
Date: Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 19:24
Unsettled weather week coming up
Some real tough weather days coming towards us this upcoming week with some marginal days mixed in with them. Sounds like the next week is going to be day-to-day so keep in touch with the office if you have fishing or cruise plans with us thru at least Friday.
Date: Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 13:00
Weekend Whale Watching weather outlook
It looks a little om the "iffy side" for the weekend upcoming. Saturday is the best day looking forward with only a moderate swell but after that the swell grows and might be a period where we stay away from ocean activities. All of this can change so stay in touch with the office if you have plans to be with us this weekend and hope for a better forecast as we get a bit closer.
Date: Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 08:04
Sure had a ton of folks out whale watching Saturday
Nice day to cruise and with the whales beginning to show up there were lots of Tradewinds faithfuls jamming the cruise boats to get out there and see them. Watch the weather as this is the time of year that the southerly migration begins to happen. It is great to see these pods of whales in the migration pass by.
Date: Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 17:42
Work week weather for next week looking good
The ocean weather forecast for this next week is looking good thru at least Friday. We will get back with you as the weekend gets closer to give yo the weekend update. Make sure you bring that warm jacket as winter time cruising at times can be a bit on the chilly side.
Date: Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 15:29
Migratory whales announcing there arrival to Depoe Bay
It is a little bit early traditionally but the migratory flow of whales heading south past Depoe Bay appears to be beginning. Normally it is around the 15th to 20th of December but today there were a number of sightings. Lets just say it early, "the migration past Depoe Bay has begun". When the ocean is nice we will be making trips on weekdays when we have enough folks to go, weekends and all during the holidays. First trips of the day normally begin around the NOON hour. One and two hour trips are available.

Whale watch trips scheduled for this weekend both Saturday & Sunday
Interested in a whale watch trip on a decent ocean? Try this weekend as the ocean weather report for several days now has held up and we are planning trips on both days starting around the NOON hour. War a warm coat and come down and cruise with the very best on the entire Oregon Coast.
Date: Monday, November 28, 2011 at 18:19
Saturday looks like a nice weekend whale watch day as of right now
There is some interest off of the the phones and the weather looks pretty good right now for Saturday so if interested give us a call. If I hear of any whale reports in the area I will pass them on to you during the week. Nice days in the winter can be few and far between so take advantage.
Date: Monday, November 28, 2011 at 13:26
Ocean weather looking better (but just a little)
Not sure exactly what days do look better in the next 5-6 days but there is some moderation showing on the forecasts. Call the office and leave a message for more details. Hopefully things will begin to get better for the upcoming holidays.
Date: Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 14:49
Just a weather update for you die-hards
Nothing really to report. Worst weather of the season so far as we are experiencing storm warnings three out of the last five days. Winds steady around 35 knots and gusting a whole lot higher then that along with that steady rain. Looks like this type of stuff with us at least thru the middle of next week.
Date: Monday, November 21, 2011 at 10:59
Another long bad weather week in front of us
Winer must be here not by date of year but by appearance. After a one day break from the elements on Sunday with a decent ocean day things have returned to winter normal. Looks like a real nasty ocean weather week in front of us. Hopefully by the Christmas Holidays where the whale migration begins in ernest things will improve some. We shall see and we will let you know on the best fishing and whale watch site with up to the minute news.
Date: Friday, November 18, 2011 at 17:40
Sunday just might be the day
You folks out there looking for a whale watch cruise things are looking up for a one day window that being Sunday. Tomorrow (Saturday) looks not-so-good but Sunday does look much better with a new series of stormy weather hitting the coast beginning early next week.
Date: Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 07:52
Whale watching not a good bet because of weather thru the weekend
Gale warnings, lots of wind, rain & heavy seas are the weather reports thru this weekend. Sounds like a nasty forecast and we will let you know when the ocean begins to moderate.
Date: Friday, November 11, 2011 at 07:59
Looks like not a good weekend or into next week for what watch cruises
It looked pretty good in the middle of the week for this weekend and then things changed abruptly as they do this time of year. Sounds like wet, windy with rough seas in the forecast. We will most certainly let you know when things start to improve.
Date: Monday, November 7, 2011 at 17:39
We still continue from shore to see a few whales out there
The weather for Saturday looks pretty good
Even though we are typically out of whales this time of year until around mid-December we still see them from time to time from the shoreline. So as long as the weather for Saturday continues to look good you might think about coming down and taking a trip out with us. We will keep you informed on the ocean weather as the week slips by.
Date: Friday, November 4, 2011 at 12:20
Weather forecast not the best
We are open this winter on nice days
Holiday gift certificates on sale NOW
The ocean weather forecast all the way thru the middle of next week does not sound all that promising. Ocean weather sounds wet, windy at times with a rather large swell most days. Certainly sounds like our whale watch activities will not be taking place for the next 4-5 days at least.
Our office will be open this winter on nice days but we will be operating on limited office hours so if you stop by or call the office either try again or leave us a message. We will get back to you as we check phone messages daily. A good way if you need an answer quickly is leave us a message on this website inquiry link as it will be answered promptly.
Remember a great way to celebrate this coming holiday season is by giving one of our gift certificates for whale watch and or fishing trips. A great holiday gift for anyone on your gift list this season.
Date: Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 19:22

Looking kinda messy for a while
THe first extended messy looking ocean weather is here and appears it might be here for a while. We will keep you up-to-date. Stay tuned as winter might be peaking its head around the corner and heading our way.
Date: Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 12:48
Whale watching gets a day off today
The ocean considering what a dreary day it is is pretty nice but it is a very wet day with some more not so nice ocean weather approaching the area this next week. We will keep you up to date.
Date: Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 16:27
No whale watch cruises today
Just after the fishing boats came in and just before the whale watch boats were scheduled to go out the swell grew as well as the waves on the bar entrance to Depoe Bay so we cancelled all of the cruises for the day.
Date: Friday, October 28, 2011 at 13:41
No whales located today
Had one cruise out today but we were not able to locate any whales. Kind of a windy day out there and looking for spouts was not at all an easy venture which added to the difficulty. Somehow we know they are still there as they have been the past few days but today was not a good day to try to find them. The weekend is forecasted to be better.
Date: Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at 14:23
There were whales out there...
...just not sure we saw them
The fishing boats saw whales about 30-35 fathoms offshore on there trips and it was reported to the cruise ships but not sure when they were out there what they saw? It was a beautiful ocean for cruising so lets just hope the folks onboard saw the whales as there was a nice bunch of them moving south.
Date: Monday, October 24, 2011 at 13:28
Whales a little on the scarce side this afternoon
About half way thru the trip we did have today the information was that the whales were not cooperating today. It is getting closer to that time when they leave the area for the Southern grounds down off the Baja area and we will be picking up that migrations as it gets in full run around the start of the Christmas holidays. We are hoping that there are still some around as it was pretty good this weekend from the info provided to me.
Date: Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 12:41
Whales still in the area
The whales are still here and there are multiple ones still feeding in the area. Historically sometime in the first part of November they should begin to leave the Depoe Bay area for the southern waters and then more going south around the Christmas holidays. The weather is holding so it is still a great time for viewing the feeding Gray whales.
Date: Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 17:34
Good weather thru the weekend
Sounds like we will have good cruise weather thru the weekend and with multiple whales in the area the past week it should be good whale watching if you were planning to come down and see us.
Date: Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 14:59
Whales North & Whales South
Good weather thru this upcoming weekend
The whales are still here and they are in all directions that we go to view them. Great weather is forecasted all the way thru this next weekend so far so it is a great time to come down with beautiful coast weather to see the whales. Tradewinds Depoe Bay the very best in getting you to the whales and providing the best camera shots for you to take.
Date: Monday, October 17, 2011 at 18:37
No whale watch activity today
The ocean close to the bar crossing was a just a little to messy so we decided to for-go any whale watch trips for the day. Tomorrow is suppose to be much better.
Date: Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 13:11
Whales just a little on the north side of the city today
We did have a couple of whales for the folks on board today to view and they were out about three-quarters of a mile and just a little bit north of the city and the harbor. They put on a nice show and the Tradewinds folks had a great time.
Date: Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 14:41
Three Gray whales South and Humpback whales North
Which direction to go? If you want to see Gray whales you just go South a quarter mile or so but if you have a faster cruise boat then you go North about four miles and you can see Humpback whales swimming. As we come to the end of this whale watch season it sure is good right now. The weather is real nice and so are the performing whales.
Date: Friday, October 14, 2011 at 15:07
Tons of whale watchers today
We didn't weigh them but it sure looked like lots of people on the cruise boats today for TW as we ran three of those cruises out there today. The whales did not disappoint either with some nearby just about a quarter of a mile to the North side of Depoe Bay. "Whale tail shots" galore made it a good time for the folks on board.
Date: Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 12:25
Good to go
It is actually pretty decent right now as of NOON Thursday to head out there as just a few bumps in the ocean road are still out there. Should be real nice by tomorrow and the weather report looks good into the first of next week. The whales are still here so come down and get your last glance at them before they begin to leave the area for the southerly migration (historically around November 1st).
Date: Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 18:11
Weekend sounds GREAT with whales still in the area
Nothing happening today but Friday thru the weekend sounds like a very decent ocean weather forecast. The whales are still there so come down and see them as it is getting close within the next few weeks that they will begin their southern departure.
Date: Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 13:41
Rough ocean once again today
Another rough ocean day and another no whale watching day as well. Friday thru the weekend looks like a pretty good chance for improved weather.
Date: Monday, October 10, 2011 at 13:45
Just to rough today but we are keeping a close eye at the end of the week as things look to be improving by then.
Date: Sunday, October 9, 2011 at 15:19
YES we will be open this winter
Well maybe not every day when the wind is blowing forty knots, the ocean looks like it is upside down and the rain is coming down sideways but we will be open on those NICE days. Everyone in this industry closes doors when the weather is like that but we will have fishing trips and whale watching trips in the winter especially during the holidays. Believe it or not sometimes we have real nice sunny weather here during that time. You can ALWAYS leave us a phone message and we will get back to you ASAP. Remember another way 24/7 (well close anyhow) is leave a message or a question for us over the Tradewinds website inquiry system and you will get an answer within hours sometimes minutes. You can also make those reservations over the website REZ system and WE will get in touch with you. So keep us in mind this winter as we have boats available and ready to go.
Date: Sunday, October 9, 2011 at 15:08
Much to rough today
A very rough ocean arrived mid-morning canceling all afternoon what watch trips for the day. Looking pretty nasty for the next four days but Thursday looks somewhat marginal and Friday looks really good as of now. We will keep you informed.
Date: Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 17:12
Beautiful day & whales in the area
Lots of cruises today and lots of whales to view. I heard there were two out there who made their dives at exactly the same time over and over and the tail shots were in perfect unison. Quite a site I am sure.
Date: Friday, October 7, 2011 at 16:35
WHALES IN THE AREA...STILL
Had only the one whale watch trip today I believe but it was a real good one with lots of performing whales to watch. The whales should be in the area thru the end of this month where they then will take off and join the southerly migration.
Date: Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 16:17
No-Go for today but should be firing up tomorrow
The ocean outside the 1st buoy looked OK for today but as the swell was diminishing inside it was still a little rough on the bar and the first half mile. All should be hopefully better for tomorrow into the weekend.
Date: Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 12:10
We did get a WW trip out today
The swell was suppose to be higher and the day was suppose to be a bit windy with rain and not much of either showed up. The ocean was not flat but was more then OK to cruise with periodic bright sun breaks showing up. Not sure of the sightings as sometimes this time of year they are hard to find out the results. Sounds like forecasted OK weather for Friday and Saturday.
Date: Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at 12:43
No-Go for whale watching today
Another pretty rough day out there so another day we sit tide to the boards. Friday the next day by the forecast it look do-able. Will keep you informed.
Date: Monday, October 3, 2011 at 13:24
Weathered out today
Not a nice day with big waves preventing the boats from getting out there. Sounds a little funky for the nice few days. We will keep you clued in so stay tuned folks.
Date: Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 15:13
Not sure we ran any whale watch trips today
...weather turned for the worst in the afternoon
Might not be any whale watch trips for the next few days as the storm system we have been watching for the last few days has arrived. We will keep you informed.
Date: Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 20:45
Good sighting today on the whale watch fronts
Had a good day whale watching and had multiple whale watch trips out to the South where the critters were hanging out. Sounds like decent weather again tomorrow so should be a good day.
Date: Friday, September 30, 2011 at 13:58
Did not hear the whale watch report today but I am sure it was a good one
Not sure what happened out there today on the 2 or 3 whale watch adventures we had today but I am going to think it was a good day for viewing the whales. This morning the fishing boats on the way out saw Gray whales out in front of the harbor a little on the north side and there was also a pod of four Orca (killer) whales out there as well. Included in that pod was one very little juvenile Orca whale who more then likely was not so far away from just being a new born. Quite the small little guy. They were obviously on the HUNT as they were inside the entrance buoy looking around the reefs. Beware all the sea lions and seals in the area !
Date: Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 14:51
Beautiful whales and there were whales
Actually do not know that totally for sure but I heard as the boats were going out that one of the iifshing boats coming in told someone that there was a whale close by. Sooooo,, I am assuming that we saw whales. It was sure a beautiful day and ocean to see the whales on this mid-wee k day. There were tons of folks in town as in three trips we have taken out close to 90 people. Good day........
Date: Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at 17:10
Good weather for whale watching thru Saturday
Sounds like some nice ocean weather for the area thru Saturday with a rising swell for Sunday. Make your plans for the next three days. The whales are out there.
Date: Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 10:59
Much to rough for whale watching today
Nineteen foot swells right on the beach area today has the buoys under water so obviously no tours for this day. Sounds like the next nice day will be Thursday. See ya then.
Date: Monday, September 26, 2011 at 12:15
The whales will still be there in a few days after the ocean storm settles down
Sounds like Thursday will be the next good day to get out on the water for you fall fishing enthusiasts as we will have unsettled ocean weather between now and thru Wednesday. We will keep you up-to-date and speak with you daily.
Date: Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 10:03
Going out on a limb today even before the whale watch schedule begins....
...There won't be any today
Still a few hours away from todays first scheduled trip but I think I am safe to inform any of the folks looking at this who might want to see whales today that you will have to do it from the shoreline. Much to rough today to take anyone out there so hope for a better day coming up. (It might be later next week also)
Date: Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 15:43
Depoe Bay (or) is Tradewinds the Whale Watching Capital of the World?
Today that was a good question that was easy to answer. For this day anyhow Tradewinds Depoe Bay was the Whale Watching Capital of the World with boat load after boat load of folks heading out to see the Gray whales. We did not disappoint either. We had six of those fellas South of Depoe Bay a few miles and we were all down there watching them and the folks on board having a great time. Everyone rushed to Depoe Bay today because there is a rumor of the start of a weather system to effect the area tomorrow so many of tomorrows customers were here today. The city was loaded with people to begin with so it was a great day for several hundred passengers today aboard the many vessels out there with us this afternoon.
Date: Friday, September 23, 2011 at 19:53
Whale sightings today for sure
Good day on the whale watch cruises with several whales to the South and at least one to the North. The big question was which way to GO???
Date: Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 12:21
Whale watch excursions cancelled for the day
No ocean activities today as the ocean swell is up over 12 foot and is very rough out there. Hopefully tomorrow brings better conditions.
Date: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 17:20
...but we can still find the whales
Funny day as the weather was just perfecto. Bright sunny day with NO wind and really a warm day for late in September with temps in the 70's. Along about 11am in the morning and the ocean swell began to grow and we have 12-13 foot walls of water out there. Before the real big stuff got here we got in one amazing whale watch trip with bunches of people on board. Lots and lots of whales put on a great show south of the city area about two miles. The whales cooperated by being outside in the water where the swell was not curling over. Good for them as they know the Tradewinds fleet was out there admiring them.
Date: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 05:56
Lots and lots of whales in the area today
Quite a large group of whales congregating in our area now with a large number of them south of the city feeding in the shallow waters. The only question today was which whale we wanted to watch?
Date: Monday, September 19, 2011 at 17:02
Too rough to takes boats out today so back in action tomorrow as the weather forecast looks good to be back in action Tuesday.
Date: Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 15:16
Two whales at Cape Foulweather to watch today
A wedding in Whale Cove to watch
Take your pick
Talk about a full purpose charter company. We fish, we catch, we entertain, we show whales and we marry. No one else can do all of this. We even supply the pastor for the wedding ceremony. Actually one of our skippers is a ordained minister. It makes it legal and everything (imagine that!!).
Oh YES, the whales...
We diid have two just a little South of the wedding and they also put on a good show. We sell this as a combo trip if you wish. The question is where was the better show????
Date: Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 15:04
I know there were whales out there today
Not any specific information available but when coming back in from the morning fishing-go-round I heard some of the smaller boats talking about the whales in the area. So with a decent ocean it must have been a good day on the whale watch front.
Date: Friday, September 16, 2011 at 18:40
Whales out there again today
Not a whole lot of information available but we ran three trips out there to take the folks out to see the whales and we were successful on all counts I am told. No surprise there as no one finds them like we do . The whales have made there way back into the area after an absence of a few weeks but this past week we have been seeing more and more of them returning so it must mean that the feed is back. Can't you hear the dinner bell ringing.......?
Date: Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 16:10
Good whale sighting day
It was a good day for watching whales with several in the area down around Gull Rock and a few more right up here by the harbor a little on the North side. Good performing whales and lots of cruise people watching them.
Date: Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 17:28
Whales out there again today
Nice day on the ocean today and not a ton of information to report but there were whales out there and the folks on board about 3-4 trips today had a fun time watching them..
Date: Monday, September 12, 2011 at 15:19
Whales out there again today
The whales were down between Gull Rock and Otter Rock today which is about 2-miles to the South of the harbor and they put on a great show for the folks on board today. We should have whales all the way thru October before they head out to pick up their other bothers and sisters on the way down to the warmer waters of Mexico. So plenty of time still left to see some of our resident whales feeding off of Depoe Bay.
Date: Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 15:00
No whale report today
The ocean was pretty nice this afternoon even though it was sorta a gray overcast afternoon. No one reported in with a whale watch report so I don't have one for you today. We did see whales yesterday however.
Date: Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 19:24
Whales in the area today
For the first time in quite a few days you could actually see what was going on out in the ocean as the fog though thick in the fishing morning hours dissipated by 10:30am and we had a clear day from there on in. Then we were able to find whales just North of the city so it turn out to be a great clear day.
Date: Friday, September 9, 2011 at 14:23
Not sure we even took a whale watch trip out there this afternoon
Because if we did I am sure that the old adage "hand in front of your face" and you couldn't see it saying would have been well understood today. Tomorrow thru the weekend and especially into the first part of next week is suppose to be better as the valleys begin to cool down. Heat in the valley produces fog over here a good part of the time.
Date: Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 19:38
First whale watch trip late in the day
....too foggy to go any earlier
Not sure the results of our one and only whale watch trip that left the docks at 3:30pm as the fog was so thick today that we cancelled all of the trip times before then Not sure what the result were but it did clear out (the fog that is) late in the afternoon so a least the folks got to see where they were going while they were out there.
Date: Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 17:07
Foggy once Again
It was so foggy out there today that the only place they could find nice water, visibility and sea life was in Whale Cove. So we went in there where it was warm, no wind, no fog and lots of harbor seals and birds to look at. Once you crossed out in the ocean it was pea soup fog with very little visibility. We will try again tomorrow.
Date: Monday, September 5, 2011 at 13:24
Ocean fog not nearly as bad today
Lots of whales offshore to see
Actually writing this at the time the ocean whale tours are in progress for the day but there are many whales just a few miles offshore. They are all feeding in a huge bait ball out there many miles long. There are Gray whales and Humpback whales out there having a huge supper.
Date: Sunday, September 4, 2011 at 16:30
Very foggy and lots of fog lovers
You could not see very well in the harbor let alone out in the ocean. The reason that is important is that we had lots of potential whale watchers wanting to go anyway to go out and see the foggy ocean. Four loaded trips today out into an ocean that visibility was less then 100 feet. They just loved it but I don't thing they saw any whales. They did see lots of sea lions on the buoys and other things we could get close to.
Date: Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 15:39
Whales in the morning at the foisting grounds but not around the Depoe Bay area
The whales were feeding up around the Lincoln City fishing grounds this morning and the bottom fishing folks got to see them but they were not to be found around the cruise area around Depoe Bay. It was sure a beautiful day to cruise the area and see the sights.
Date: Friday, September 2, 2011 at 17:18
Strange day in the whale wars (looking for them that is)
The cruise boats I do not believe saw any whales today but the salmon boats in the morning hours saw several more pods of Blue whales and a number of Humpback whales as well. They were quite a ways offshore however and probably was not a good day to take cruisers that far offshore with all of the wind and choppy waters we had today. Tomorrow is another day.
Date: Thursday, September 1, 2011 at 18:11
Whales on every trip today
Good day of whale watching as hopefully and we have our fingers crossed that the whales are back for the rest of the summer days left and of course into the fall. Good sightings and good performing whales today so the information source said.

Whales on every trip today
Good day of whale watching as hopefully and we have our fingers crossed that the whales are back for the rest of the summer days left and of course into the fall. Good sightings and good performing whales today so the information source said.
Date: Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at 15:30
We did see whales today
It has been a few days in a row now that we do once again have whales in the area. Thats a good sign. Not much more info then that but heard it was a good performing whale.
Date: Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at 14:21
Mot sure about the whale sightings today
More Blue whales??
We were off and running on more ocean whale cruises today at the Noon hour with high hopes of more Gray whales to be seen like it has been the past few days. Hopefully they are back. Another report just offshore was that more Blue whales in the area again. Hard to imagine what is going on with the Blue whales as you can go a lifetime without ever seeing one of them and now the past two weeks we have had 4-5 days with sightings. Interesting occurrences here at Tradewinds...

Whales again today
For the 2nd day in a row we had Gray whales in our area which (hopefully) is a good sign for the rest of this summer. It has been a good summer even though for a week or two there in August the Gray whales were absent but we had quite a few of those days where the Blue whales were here and here lately the Humpbacks are around. So every summer probably will never be perfect as this has not been but all in all still a 90% chance for seeing whales this summer on an average is still pretty positive to be telling the folks looking for whale trips.
Date: Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 16:41
...a good whale watch report in doubles
It has been a while since I was able to say this but we had whales today. Not only did we have a Gray whale in the area south of the harbor a half mile or so but we had quite a few Humpback whales offshore in fairly close that we were able to get to. The Tradewinds whale watch fleet will take you out to where the whales are and not caring to much about a little more fuel being burned. We always try to give the folks the best shot we can to give them every opportunity to see whales of any type. We are the best and we go the extra mile to prove it.

The fog went away
....but still no whale sightings
After a very foggy morning it all disappeared by whale watch time. That was the good news but even with all of that visibility there were no sightings today. It turned out to be a nice cruise day with three almost full boats out there taking in the sights up and down the Oregon Coast.
Date: Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 19:10
No Idea at all if we saw whales today
Word out of a TW source was that we took over 100 perspective watchers out this afternoon
So I guess we saw whales?
The folks were sure waiting in line to go on the whale watch cruises today with a huge number for a mid-week schedule. Did not hear anything about the results as I was out of town but heard of the large number we loaded on the boats. So I guess we saw them????
Date: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 15:01
More fog and no whale sightings today
When it is hot in the valleys of Oregon expect a good chance of foggy conditions on the coast. When it is foggy here finding whales is sometimes like finding a needle in a haystack. We had whales a few days ago and then came the fog and were shooting blanks here the last couple of days.
Date: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 06:17
Quite foggy today....hard to see anything
No whale sightings Tuesday. After a good day of sightings on Monday today was much different with pretty thick fog all day preventing us from finding the whales.
Date: Monday, August 22, 2011 at 15:57
DOUBLE good whale watching today
One of our good friends the Gray whales were back today for good sighting all day long and then to add to the Tradewinds whale watching excitement another Blue whale showed up as well. What is happening around here? You are lucky if you see one of those guys in a lifetime and this is the 5th day in the past couple of weeks that we are seeing Blue whales. Something in our area is drawing them in here so take advantage of this while you can folks. Only @ Tradewinds Depoe Bay.
Date: Sunday, August 21, 2011 at 15:52
Nice ocean but very foggy out there today
Not sure how the whale watch activity went today but I do know even if they were out there it would take a pretty lucky boat operator to find them as the fog was pretty thick today.

Back to the Beautiful Oregon Cruises
Still do not have any consistency in the past week on the whale sightings as we had that windy period to drive some food back into the area but the whales are not as numerous in the area right now thus harder to locate. So today at least on the first couple of cruises we were back to Beautiful Oregon Coast Cruises seeing the sights and the bird and marine mammal tours. Hopefully the whale guys will get back into our area real soon.
Date: Friday, August 19, 2011 at 16:09
No Oregon Coast cruises today...
...thar be whales back in the area
Well I heard that as soon as we got some wind to bring some whale food back that the whales would be back. Well that was obviously the truth as the wind came back a day or so ago and here are the whales. There were two of them just south of Depoe Bay and put on some good performances for the folks on board the Tradewinds boats. A little foggy and a little windy but the ocean was pretty nice other then that.
Date: Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 16:31
One whale report up North...
....other then that it was a Beautiful Oregon Coast cruise day
The great Blue whales seem to have departed the area and there are reports of Humpback whales offshore but the Gray whales still have not returned to the area. There was one report of one a few miles north of Depoe Bay in the morning hours but not during the cruise day schedule.
Date: Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 14:35
Wednesday's Whale Report
No ocean on this ocean today meaning no swell to speak of but quite a bit of wind. Makes it harder to find whales. There was a report of the Blue whales still being in the area but we have not had any luck to date in finding them this afternoon thus far. Tomorrow is suppose to be a much better day as the winds begin to calm down (hopefully). Should be a good day if the forecast holds true with only 10 knots of wind and a 3-foot swell. Go get those Tuna and see the Humpback whales out there offshore.
Date: Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 14:36
Kind of windy out there today
....no word on the whale sightings today
As soon as the fishing trips got back in around the NOON hour today and the whale watch trips were about to begin the wind started blowing. It was kind of interesting because many of the boats that had headed offshore this morning were heading into the friendly confines of the Depoe Bay harbor area rather quickly. The whales are out there somewhere but we did not hear any whale reports today.
Date: Monday, August 15, 2011 at 14:42
Gray whales are back!!!
No one wants to watch them !!!
Strange but true...no one wants to watch the return of the Gray whales which are down south of the harbor about a mile after being absent the past week.
Why you ask???
Because the Blue whales are still here frockling from about a mile North of the city area to about a half mile South of the city area. Why??? No one knows but it has been spectacular here the past few days and one other day late last week. No telling if and when they will be leaving but it has been fabulous. It is once in a lifetime thing to see the largest living creature on the face of the earth I think.
Date: Monday, August 15, 2011 at 06:17
No Gray whales now for about a week...
but there were more BLUE WHALES yesterday
In the absence of the Gray whales which I was told yesterday that we ned some winds to come in to gather up the whale food which in turn will bring the whales back into the area. So if you like whales hope for wind.
In the absence of the Gray whales we were blessed this week with two days of sightings of the very rarely seen Blue Whales. These guys are as spectacular as it gets as they run 75-100 feet in length. They throw a spout it looks like possibly 100 feet in the air and are breath taking to watch. No telling if they will be around today but it has been a rare blessing that many people who live along the coast all there lives never have had the opportunity to see one. Tradewinds was the first to spot them and now it has happened twice in a week. What might be the chances of that???

Another Oregon Coast scenic cruse day
Humpback whales offshore in the morning hours
Another day of cruising without whales even though the morning salmon fishing boats saw some out about six miles offshore from the harbor in the Humpback whale variety. It was a beautiful day for the cruises which were run on sun drenched flat ocean no wind type of day.
Date: Friday, August 12, 2011 at 16:47
Whales still missing
Sorry whale watch folks....The whales are still missing in action. We need some kind of a change to bring the whale food back into the area. In the meantime we are offering great ocean cruises for the folks.
Date: Thursday, August 11, 2011 at 13:18
Another beautiful day for Oregon Coast cruises
No whales again today. There is good news however. The water is beginning to clear somewhat and when that happens some of the folks tell me that possibly that will being the whale food back in and also the whales. We will let you know.. In the meantime we will give you a beautiful ocean cruise where you will see tons of ocean life with marine mammals, birds, possibly bald eagles and many other things. Well worth the few dollars that it will cost ya.
Date: Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at 16:19
Two incredible sightings today
No Gray whales again today
Another Oregon Coast beautiful cruise day
Sorry but the bad water if that is the case (dirty greenish brown water) is still with us. Have no idea if that is the problem with the Gray whales being gone but is a good place to start. It sure is affecting the fishing. So we cruised the sights of the Oregon Coast and saw the marine mammals, sea birds, etc.
The BIG surprise today was the sighting of two Blue whales. They are if not the largest living thing on earth they are certainly close. They grow close to 100 feet long and put up a spout that was rising well over 50 feet high. It was a spectacular thing to see as I have never seen one before. Not one today but two of them fairly close to shore about 3 miles offshore. One of the whale watch vessels was called in and got over 250 photos of the animals. Once in lifetime viewing. I was going to say only @ Tradewinds Depoe Bay but it is more appropriately hardly ever anywhere.

Beautiful weather days thru the weekend
As summer gets a little longer the weather keeps getting better and it will stay that way clear thru this weekend. It is a great time to come down and go fishing or whale watching. Ocean conditions are forecasted to be near perfect.
Date: Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 20:06
Beautiful Oregon ocean cruises today
Whales still missing
The whales are still missing. Beginning to think it might have something to do with the muddy looking dark green water we have North to South and East to West. It is everywhere. Don't ever remember it being over a large area as it is now. Not sure even whale food could survive or want to swim around in this murky stuff. In the meantime we are giving the best Oregon Coast cruises known to man (and women).
Date: Monday, August 8, 2011 at 15:43
No whales on the first trip...
...not sure what happened after that on the afternoon trips
It was certainly another beautiful day with perfect ocean conditions but the whales are not cooperating at least in our area of searches. Hopefully this will not last very long as we need some kind of a change to bring the feed back into the area according to one of the resident folks who you would think might know.
Date: Sunday, August 7, 2011 at 16:01
Whales gone again today
Were in a little bit of a lull here folks as the whales have moved somewhere obviously to find some food to eat. One of the resident whale watching-aholics here indicated that the food that the whales eat seems to be gone at the moment. Don't worry as it is like ocean jellyfish. If you think you are finally out of them and won't see anymore just wait a day or so even hours. The food for the whales will return and so will the whales.
Other then that we still have a great cruise for you as we are seeing loads of ocean inhabitants out there and our skippers do a good job of changing gears and showing you a great time and at the same time still looking for whales.
Date: Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 17:15
Scenic Cruise day again this afternoon....
...then there were whales
It was another day for the beautiful Oregon Coast scenic cruise experience and then like magic the whales showed up and they turned back into whale watch cruises. So we were forced to abandon our cruise schedule and go and watch the whales. I guess that was a real good thing and lets hope they are back in our area for another long stay.
Date: Friday, August 5, 2011 at 15:40
Beautiful scenic Oregon Coast cruises today
What a beautiful day to cruise the beautiful Oregon Coast and see the harbor porpoise, multiplier specie sea birds, Bald Eagles, sea lions & the harbor seals. On top of that a beautiful cruise down the inside waters South of Depoe Bay under the cliffs of Cape Foulweather had the folks breathless. By the way there were No whales to be found today.
Date: Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 14:49
Actually I am not real sure however on my way down Highway 101 I saw the whale watch Tradewinds Express fleet circling the wagons in an area south of Depoe Bay which in my mind can only mean whales, whales, and more whales.
Date: Wednesday, August 3, 2011 at 15:36
Kinda foggy out there today
heard there was a whale spotted south of the harbor area
Not to much information out there today about the goings on whale watching that I was able to pick up but I did hear that there was a whale under the crest as we call it which is about a mile or so south of the harbor entrance. Also heard that some boats were on it so I assume we had whale views today. Not much more information to give ya today.
Date: Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 15:39
Whales out in front of the harbor and down south as well
Good day on a picture perfect ocean to watch whales out of Tradewinds Depoe Bay. When the ocean gets nice the folks really want to go as we had one cruise at 11am and then four full boats all going out at 12:30pm.... Lots of cruise people all day long boarding the Tradewinds cruise boats and the whale were here to put on shows for them all.
Date: Monday, August 1, 2011 at 15:58
Whaling today was successful
Lots of trips out today and whales I believe were sighted on all of the trips. They were down south aways feeding in the areas down there that obviously contain the kinds of foods that they eat. LIttle shrimp like things that are about as big as your little fingernail. They eat thousands of pounds of it each and every day. Weather beautiful today with no fog and virtually no wind.
Date: Sunday, July 31, 2011 at 15:17
Sounded like a couple of whales were back today
Five cruises out today to see the whales and the Tradewinds fleet did not disappoint as there were as many as 2-3 whales out there in different directions for the folks to see. The ocean was nice, the sun was shining and the winds were way down over past few days around here. A good day to see the whales and cruise the Oregon Coastline.
Date: Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 15:38
Weather improved but...
the whales are hiding
Today was the first time in the past four days that we have not had really windy conditions out there as the weather has improved. So it was like beginning the whale watch season all over again and get out there and find those whales. On the first trip we didn't find them and no information on the rest of the trips today. Once we find them and get the pattern of travel they are taking we will be back on them again.
Date: Friday, July 29, 2011 at 16:51
Very windy again today
Some moderation expected by tomorrow afternoon
No totally sure about the whale sightings today but like the day before it was quite windy out there even though the ocean was not a bad ride at all. More information tomorrow.
Date: Friday, July 29, 2011 at 05:17
Windy day makes whale watching difficult
The ocean was OK but it was so windy by the late morning that finding the whales was very difficult. The way we find them a very large majority of the time is by spotting the spouts. Not today....The wind just blew down the spout so quickly that locating the critters was very hard. Hopeful for a better less windy day when we being late morning on our never ending quest for Gray whales.
Date: Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 19:36
Whales down South today like yesterday
We had a number of cruises out to see the whales today and not quite sure what the cruise by cruise results were however they were seeing whales down South of the city a mile or so from what i heard on the radios. Nice sunny day but a bit on the windy side.
Date: Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at 15:57
Whales a long way away today
It was quite a ride to get down to where the whales were today and after getting there they were back behind wash rocks and very hard to see. It was an area that was very difficult for big boats to get into safely. After trying to get around to the other side to look in there and still being quite a ways away we spent the rest of the trips visiting Whale Cove and seeing the other sights around Depoe Bay as well as looking for other whales. It was a tough day but there were lots of marine mammals to see and sea birds as well as the beautiful Oregon Coastline.
Date: Monday, July 25, 2011 at 15:56
Four trips out to see the whales today
Lots and lots of folks on the Tradewinds whale watch express to see the whales today as we ran the first two in semi-foggy conditions and then our lucky stars were with us as the fog swept away and in came the brilliant sunshine. It was a great day and we found whales in the fog as well. Whale fog radar is a good thing to have. It drives us right to them. A little white lie there. Good whales today as they put on good shows for the folks on the first three trips and the 4th go around is going on as I write.
Date: Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 18:39
Whaling I think was pretty good all day?
Not quite sure of my facts here but I know there were whales out there today and I know when I heard where they were it was a real easy FIND so to speak. We did however have some foggy periods today for a hour or so and was not real sure about one of those trips. Trying to keep it factual here now to keep the criticism down.
Date: Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 18:56
Whales on all trips except for one
A real nice sunny day produced multiple whales except for one trip when they just were not showing anywhere. On the next trip out they were back again....Thats whale watching as once in a while they just disappear. On the trips that we did find them they put on great shows for the folks on board.
Date: Friday, July 22, 2011 at 17:44
Whales at Gull Rock area all day long
Lots of whale watch excursions today and each trip was going south a few miles to the Gull Rock area which is where the whales were playing all day. Good shows those whales were putting on and the folks had a good time on the trips. The last trip because of the NW winds caused the water to get quite choppy so it was a good time to quit for the day.
Date: Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 16:54
Not much happening today....
weather made whale watching difficult
We did run one trip out on a cruise today but not to sure what the results were. It was a cold, rainy, foggy day on a choppy ocean. By the time the weather cleared up later in the afternoon it was too little to late as it goes. Suppose to be better tomorrow so the forecasters tell us.
Date: Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 17:54
Thanks to all loyal readers out there
Recently I have been getting quite number of nice emails in a thank you form for the Tradewinds reports we give both for the whale watching and the fishing news. We try very hard here to get it right or as right as we can. We give it our best "fair and balanced" effort to give you the most accurate report based on the information we receive and still be a good company guy. We give you our best honest shot included with some positive spin that things will get better (hopefully... and they normally do).

Whales down south today
Only one whale we were watching today but he was a good one putting on a good show for the passengers on board our vessels today. It was probably the most beautiful ocean of the summer today with almost no wind, flat ocean and beautiful sunshine almost the entire day.
Date: Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at 20:28
Lots of trips
...plenty of whales
Saw one of our whale watch boats out there after 5pm today down south still watching whales. Long day out there but what a beautiful ocean to watch whales. The sidewalks were plenty full today of people in Depoe Bay taking in the sights and browsing in the gift shops. Then they ventured down to the Depoe Bay bridge and went whale watching with us. Good way to begin or end your day in Depoe Bay.
Date: Monday, July 18, 2011 at 15:37
Packed to the rafters....
but still lots of room
Our cruise boats were packed full of folks wanting to see the whales today as we ran morning into the later afternoon and the whales did not disappoint. It was a beautiful day as far as the ocean went with intermittent sunshine but light winds with calm seas. The whales were putting on great shows in their feeding cycles and several times they came right up next to the boats. We are by law requires to stay clear of the whales a certain distance but if they come up next to the boat it is OK. More good weather thru the week.
Date: Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 16:06
Whales down South today..
on all the trips
We saw whales again today on all our trips and they were close by down near the Cape Foulweather area. The report was the whales put on good shows for the folks and everyone had a great time with many Kodak moments. The summer is such a great time to whale watch and with the wind and rain out of the area now it is also a nice warm pleasant ride. Come on down and join us. We begin daily at 11am and run on the hour and a half until there is no one left to go.

Whales swimming around in choppy ocean waters
...it didn't seem to bother them
The whales were down outside of Gull Rock today and put on a GREAT show as it was described by our whale watch boat today. We ran three afternoon trips out to see them and all were successful .
Date: Friday, July 15, 2011 at 17:16
Whales on most trips and a little spotty on our initial trip of the day
The whales in a little choppy water first off today were a little hard to find but then they re-appeared for the better part of the afternoon. Not quite as many around the area as a few days ago but fear not they will all be back.
Date: Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 17:30
Probably were whales out there but not sure?
It was not a real nice day out there today with wind and some rain in the air and the ocean was quite choppy. It appeared that it improved a little as the afternoon went on. The whales were probably a little difficult to find in all of that weather but I do believe I heard of some down around the Gull Rock area. That however is all that I know about todays action.
Date: Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at 18:52
Whale trips today thru the day
We ran whale trips right up to the 4pm hour today and had whales on every trip. Most of the day they were right out in front of the harbor so the passengers got a full hour of whale viewing and very little travel time. In the summer we run mostly 1-hr trips as the whales are so close and we are on them so quickly. For a larger group who want the 2-hr trip we still run them from time to time. The 2-hr trips are normally reserved for the winter and the spring migrations as they are further offshore and takes longer to get out to them. So today was another great day with the whales putting on good shows for the passengers.

The broken record continues
Sometimes in the summer it is hard to think of things to say about the whale watching as it has been so good now for so long. It is like a broken record. It sure is nice to be able to take the folks out there and find the whales every day as it is something very special to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat doing all those things that whales do. You never really get tired of seeing and watching them. It was great again today even though we had a little bit of liquid sunshine from time to time but the ocean was just as pleasant as it could be. Tomorrow just the same but with non-leaking sunshine.
Date: Monday, July 11, 2011 at 15:22
Whales - Whales - Whales
like a broken record
Three loaded Tradewinds whale watch adventures today to see the whales which were right outside the channel entrance. One trip the boats cleared the sea wall and made an immediate left hand turn to the port side (thats nautical talk). They were really close today. They were also feeding to the north and the south of the city so plenty of whales to view.
We are also seeing lots of different sea birds and of course the ever present sea lions and harbor seals. Some of the folks who fish hate those guys but they are rather cute and are really very good at what they do which is stealing fishermen's fish after they hook "em. They have to eat also. That is there home out there so if you look at it in a practical manner we are invading their space. Now if a sea lion tried to come into my house then I would be justified to be mad at him (or her). Anyhow if you have even seen a sea lion steal a salmon right behind a fishing boat when it is being reeled in it is quite the sight and then surfaces and chews it right in full view. Would that make you mad??? Results of the survey tomorrow night!!!

Another great day for whale watchers
Several hundred whale watchers out for TW whale viewing today on a bright sunny flat ocean day. The whales were North, they were South and then later in the afternoon they were right out front. It just gets better and better as we get deeper into summer. This has been a spectacular summer of whale watching so far. Come down and cruise with us as we try hard to give you the best trip that we know how.
Date: Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 14:30
Whales north and south of the harbor today
We had whales up off of Boiler Bay and whales down south around the Gull Rock area. The big decision was which way to go. We went both ways...one cruise both that way and the other cruise boat the other way. Really good whale performances in both areas.
Date: Friday, July 8, 2011 at 12:48
Over 100 on our first two cruises
Yes, we do use multiple boats to cruise
The cruisers are sure out and about in very large numbers on the Tradewinds express cruise line with cruises most of the day into the late afternoon and beginning at the 11am hour. The whales are putting on really good shows as today they were south of Depoe Bay around 3-4 of them down around Gull Rock a mile or two south of the city. Great family fun with the Tradewinds whale watch express. You can call in for reservation or just show up at the Highway 101 office and we will put you on the boats. If we get too many for one boat we just call in another. Pretty cool flexibility huh???

Full boats whale watching all day long
It was a great day for whale watching as the fog was only sticking around offshore a ways and the winds were calm and the ocean was very nice. A far cry from yesterdays weather. The whales are here in multiples and the Tradewinds crews onboard the boats know where and how to find them. They did indeed find them today with whales right out in front of the harbor and a little further north. They are probably south as well but no need to go down there when we have them right in the general Depoe Bay area. We have lots of room as we have multiple boats ready to take you out and see the whales. No one does it better then Tradewinds with our very clean smooth running vessels

Only one whale watch trip today
It was foggy and the wind was blowing but we did manage to get out on one whale watch excursion before we called it for the remainder of the day. Yes, we did see whales but the fog moved back in and when we lost the whale in the fog we thought better of another trip. Hopefully weather and ocean better tomorrow.

Lots of Sun, Lots of Wind & Lots of Whales
It was a great day for our whale cruise boats with the sun beating down on them all day even though it was a bit on the windy side put there. To make up for that there were also lots of whales putting on really good shows for the folks.
Date: Monday, July 4, 2011 at 12:49
Another full trip day for the TW fleet
Oh YES, whales to be seen
We shortly will be starting our 3rd trip of the day at 2pm and have had full boats on the first two and expect the same for the third.
Lots of sunshine, nice ocean and whales putting on great shows. We have had Humpbacks and Orca whales seen periodically the past few days also. They are no where near as dependable as the Gray whales but the chance is there this time of year.
Fair & Balanced Reports coming your way daily

Over 100+ faithful were watching WHALES today with Tradewinds
Great whale watching with Tradewinds today as we had full boats taking the holiday whale watchers out to see some great performing whales on a beautiful ocean. Tomorrow looks just as busy and just as nice of weather so come on down and take in the great cruise with some great whale shows. We have plenty of boats and plenty of room for all of you on the "best in the West", Tradewinds Depoe Bay.

Much nicer ocean today and whales to be seen
The ocean as compared to yesterday is much-much nicer and we are currently watching two whales put on a good show on the North side of Depoe Bay up off of Government Point which is about a half mile to the North of the city center. Reports of a few more was the word a little on the south side as well. Good summertime whale watching.
Date: Friday, July 1, 2011 at 17:56
Not much to report today
We only took one trip out today and that was not a successful one. The ocean was very windy from the beginning of the whale watch trips so we ran one and called it off for the remainder of the day. It is suppose to be much better tomorrow.

Whales immediately out in front of the harbor on the Tradewinds voyages today
Interesting that sometimes the boat leaves the harbor makes a right or left hand turn immediately and watches the whales. The people were also watching the whales from the cliffs around the Depoe Bay harbor area. Not anything like being on the water right next to the whale but they get to see a spout from high above. It is all cool to see a giant ocean mammal just the same from any vantage point. Another good day for watching whales.

Four whale watch trips out of the World's Smallest Harbor today
There was good whale watching on the first two whale watch trips today as we had two full boats out on the first trip at 11am today but was not sure about the 3rd trip. It was a little "nautical" out there as the third trip progressed so hopefully they did find the whales for the folks to view. It was a good day of whale watching.

Cancelled today due to weather
It was wet, windy and the ocean a little bumpy today which was totally opposite from what the weather report said it was suppose to be. Anyhow, we thought better about going today. Tomorrow will be a better day. We hope....

Whales out there in the early morning hours
...not sure about the whale tours
The whales from yesterday were seen out there during the fishing trips but no word on the whale watch tours which took place a few hours later. Hopefully they were out there for those folks to see as well.

They are back...all of them
The past two days we had one day without whales and yesterday with just one. That was a strange occurance as we have had multiple whales in the area for over a moth before that. Well they are all back. Probably around a half dozen graced our passengers today but they only go to see a few of them each trip. You had to make a decision which way to go. They were North and South and not enough time to go both directions. It was a great day to be here for whale watching.

The whale with No friends
Early this afternoon on the whale watch trips we had just one lone whale in the area swimming around and feeding. One whale for the folks to see is better then none I guess but several short of what has been in the area the past few weeks. That will change as they begin to venture back into the area. They find one good feeding hole and stay around that area for a while and then come back to the old stomping grounds off of Depoe Bay where historically there is much food to be eaten. Our lone whale was a good performing one.

The whale report missing today
Sorry folks but the report is missing today. I think however it was not a real good day as I did notice whale boats running all over the place looking for whales in every direction. They do make themselves had to find at times. Tomorrow they will probably be back in the area putting on good shows. One thing that has improved is the number of sea lions in the area now. They are in plentiful supply if you like sea lions. They are fun to look at. Probably they are showing up now in large numbers because the salmon are starting to show up. They like a good salmon meal.

Plenty of whale watching today
Not a whole lot of information available today only that we had plenty of trips out to see them today and that they were being seen doing their tricks down a little South of the harbor area this afternoon. More tomorrow....

Everybody looking for whales today and they were pretty much right out front
The whales were really playing hide and seek today at least from the folks looking for them. Most of the boats found them eventually but for most of the day the strange thing was they were pretty much right out in front of the harbor and just a little on the North side. The day before there were so many in the area that the cruise boats were scurrying around looking here and there today and they were just congregated in one place all day. It was a fun day of whale watching. By the way we also had some Humpback whales spotted yesterday moving North along the beach area so we should be seeing those guys for a month or so as they migrate by our area.
Date: Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 17:30
Lots of whales close by today
There were lots of whales very close by as the report was that they started down south in the morning hours and up to a half dozen were spotted down there feeding. By the time the late morning came around and the cruise boats took to the waters they had moved up at least most of them to right out in front of the harbor about a half mile out. So the folks watched whales as soon as they pretty much crossed under the Depoe Bay bridge until they had to come back in an hour later. Good Day.......
Date: Monday, June 20, 2011 at 14:43
Whales just about everywhere today
It might have been that the whales we were seeing today were just moving quickly from place to place. (or) There were just multiple whales out there North, South and everywhere. More likely the later. They seemed to be showing up at all of the places that we mainly look for them all at the same time. Radio reports were everywhere today of people seeing whales here and there. Good news for Depoe Bay whale watching.
Date: Sunday, June 19, 2011 at 15:39
Whales on all three trips today
A good whale watch day on a beautiful sunny afternoon with calm seas and light winds for the folks on the Tradewinds boats. The whales were down along the south side but within about one mile from the harbor. They according to all reports put on a real nice show as on two of the trips there were multiple whales but on the middle trip there was only one. The disappearing whale showed up again for the third trip of the day.
Date: Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 15:13
Not a nice day to whale watch
It was windy, wet and foggy because of the misty rain all daylong at least up to fairly late in the afternoon. Finding whales in that soupy condition was really going to be tough so we gave into doing any whale watching for the day. Tomorrow is suppose to be much better.
Date: Friday, June 17, 2011 at 15:52
Lots of whales for all of the Tradewinds guests to see today...
...and there were lots of them (people that is) on this beautiful sunny day
All of the whales were down South today at least the ones we were watching. Three to be exact putting on great shows for the many-many Tradewinds visitors we had on our boats today to watch them. They really put on a grand show and not being at all bashful and coming up very close to the boats. We parked quite a ways away from them but sooner or later they made there way to where the boats were. Great Tradewinds whale watch day!!!
Date: Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 14:50
Keep the shore power plug in !!
If you had a long enough shore power cord you could of left in plugged in as the whales were right out in front of the harbor most of the afternoon for our whale watch guests. I guess you could have watched them from the Highway 101 lookouts today. Not trying to sell tickets too much but it is just not the same. Being down there with them and hearing their spouts is worth the price of admission. Anyhow it was a great day to watch whales out of Tradewinds Depoe Bay he whale watch capitol of Depoe Bay.
Date: Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 15:19
Gull Rock Whales
Lots of terrific performing whales about a mile and a half South of the Depoe Bay harbor down around the big rock we call or so timely name Gull Rock. Lots of birds roost down there and there is evidence to prove it. Also a good place if the whales are hiding to find them and today they were there putting on good performing acts for the folks. Good day of whale watching.
Date: Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at 12:39
Not sure on the cruise results but plenty of whales out there
The fishing boats saw whales both on the north and the south side this morning. The southern whales were putting on a good show for the fishing boats about a mile or so south of the harbor entrance off of Gull Rock. Hopefully they are out there performing for the cruise boat fleet.
Date: Monday, June 13, 2011 at 16:17
Whales in the area today
Quite a few whales in the are all day long especially in the morning hours during the fishing trips. Most of them seemed to be down in the south area of the Depoe Bay area feeding down around the wash rocks. Anyhow our passengers did see them today out on the whale watch trips.
Date: Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 20:50
Evening whale update
The final two cruises of the day we did see whales. As we should know you can go out one trip and see nothing and then go out a half hour later and they are surrounding the boat. So we don't have to talk about not seeing whales today. They showed up later in the day from wherever they were hiding the first few trips.
Date: Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 14:50
For the first time in many weeks whale watching not good today
It was a beautiful Sunday on the ocean but the whales after being just about everywhere for the past 3-4 weeks were not available today for viewing according to the reports. The fishing boats who fished down South this morning saw two down there swimming around the Gull Rock area for the first part of the morning but when the tours started around 11am they seemed to evaporate. Tomorrow is another day.
Date: Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 13:21
Lots of whales in the morning
Not sure what is going on out there this afternoon but there were 2-3 whales up North of Depoe Bay this morning as the fishing boats were heading North. Hopefully they are having good sighting this afternoon. We also heard quite a few reports of whales offshore as the Halibut boats saw them coming back in around 70-fathoms out there (6 miles or so).
Date: Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 19:42
Boat racing to the South
Don't have much information tonight for you on todays whale watching. I did see three whale watch boats steaming to the South about a half mile apart so I can only assume the whales had moved down around the Gull Rock area for the day of feeding. It is one of the favorite spots for the whales and a spot where if you can't find them anywhere else look there.
Date: Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 15:13
Whales are definitely here for the summer!...
Ooops...should I really have said that?
These past 3 weeks have we ever had such good late Spring whale watching? Probably just as good in some past years but hard for me to remember it being better then this. So I hope I didn't jinx it all and find that all the whales are gone tomorrow until I take it back. Well it will be to late to take it back after I hit the publish button down below and to the right on my computer screen right now but I am going to take that chance. It is really good whale watching right now as it seems everyday we are finding multiple whales in every direction and they seem to be all feeding and content to remain in the area. I am submitting the addition NOW!
Date: Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at 14:42
Not sure if we whale watched today or not
The ocean was a bit on the "nautical side today" so not sure what we did at cruise time? I would guess on the side of that we didn't go as it was a little messy right out in front of the channel entrance and windy and choppy out normally where the whales are. The whales were there as I was watching them this morning about a half mlle off from the city so they probably got a day off and we will see them tomorrow for show time
Date: Monday, June 6, 2011 at 15:53
Whales everywhere today but you had to go North to find them
A few of the Tradewinds fishing boats heading North this morning were seeing multiple whales in pods from about a mile North of Depoe Bay all the way up to the Lincoln City area about six nautical miles North of that. There was also a pod of Orca whales heading South during the fishing trip time. They seemed to be hard to find in the morning hours by some of the whale watch boats? When the afternoon whale watch boats went out they ran up to where they were spotted in the morning and found them easily. Must have been a morning thing or glare or something that was hiding them from the tour boats. Funny things happen out there from time to time.
Date: Sunday, June 5, 2011 at 16:26
Whales pretty much everywhere today again
Another great day for whale watching with whales in any direction as you left the harbor and a few right out in front of the harbor. There was also some reports of some other species of whales in the area like a Pilot whale which I overheard. Anyhow if you are looking for whales to observe it can't get much better then the Depoe Bay are right now.
Date: Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 18:34
Waiting for the Whale Watch report as I speak
I'll start typing it as soon as the skipper who was out there sends a text back (6:12pm)
Well it is 6:33pm and just got the WW report. It was amazing whale watching today. There were plenty of whales according to my report between here and Cape Foulweather a mile or so South of Depoe Bay and they were all putting on really good shows for thew folks. Should be another nice day tomorrow.
Date: Friday, June 3, 2011 at 15:47
Whales - Whales - Whales
Whales on a beautiful ocean out in front of Depoe Bay were everywhere. They were North as well as right out in front of Depoe Bay most of the day. There were three more South of Depoe Bay off of Gull Rock feeding in that area. Whale watching right now is spectacular so come take advantage of the real good weather and nice ocean conditions.
MEET OR BEAT ANY PRICE
Tradewinds Depoe Bay will match or beat any whale watching quote that you have been given. Come see us at our Highway 101 office right next to the North end of the Depoe Bay Bridge.
Date: Thursday, June 2, 2011 at 12:53
Whales continue feeding in our area
More whales seen today and they appear from all indications to part of the same half dozen or so that have been observed feeding in our are for the past 3-4 weeks or so. That gives us the impression that these guys (gals) are here for the summer making for another great summer of resident whale watch activities. Hopefully even more will swim by and see the abundance of food for them to eat and deicide to spend their summer with us also.
Date: Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 13:21
Four whales in the area today
It was a good Depoe Bay whale day with one whale just outside the harbor by the #2 buoy and three more including Scarback (so he was named) down a few miles south. The whales were putting on a real good show for the folks on board.
Date: Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 15:48
Whaling good again today
It certainly appears like we have those resident whales here as it has been several weeks in a row now I believe that we have had good whale sightings on our whale trips. They are being seen at the places where they feed in the summer and they wouldn't stick around unless there was food in the area. So with that in mind Tradewinds has the best whale watch trips on the coast beginning some days at the 11am hour and every day by the NOON hour. Check out our coupon link for some discounts on the cleanest boats on the coast and the most experienced skippers.
Also a word that our sea lion population has finally returned from wherever sea lions go and they are inhabiting the buoys out in front of Depoe Bay. They are always fun to see and make for great photos. I assume there return means that there are some salmon around the area. I am sure it is the lions favorite food as they steal it from the fisherman. That is worth the price of admission to see a salmon on a hook only to have half of it gone when it gets to the boat. Some folks might not find that all that amusing.
Date: Monday, May 30, 2011 at 15:01
Lots of whales in the area today
Probably around 4-5 feeding whales in the area today for a large number of whale watch folks who boarded our vessels today after the Memorial Day Fleet of Flowers ceremony. It was a fun day with lots of whales in the area as we celebrated out nations armed forces.
Date: Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 10:03
No whale reports but will update this afternoon
Sorry for the past few days of whale reports but have been out of town and have only sketchy reports so will get more accurate today early evening.

No whale watching again today
Just to windy, wet and semi-rough out there today to take whale watchers out. Hope for better conditions tomorrow.

No whale watching Thursday
It got wet and windy mid-morning Thursday so all of our whale watch activities were cancelled for the day.
Date: Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at 17:39
No whale report today
No report today but not because we didn't go but because I never was afforded a report for the day. (Maybe we didn't go today?) Later in the afternoon it looked like it was quite windy and choppy out there but I saw a whale as I drove by one of the lookout points. That was certainly a stroke of luck driving a car and looking at a windy choppy ocean. So at least we know they are still out there and in the area.
Date: Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at 13:23
Whales to the North & Whales to the South
Good whale watch day with whales down south which appeared and then went and hid so we went north and found some more. Good day of whale watching and these guys were feeding also and that is a good sign that they are finding food and hopefully are sticking around for the summer.
Date: Monday, May 23, 2011 at 20:56
Beautiful ocean except for right in front of the channel entrance
Lots of whales by the way
We had three whales in the vicinity today all feeding around the Depoe Bay area so good sightings and Kodak moments for the folks. Also we had a beautiful ocean to cruise on except for right in front of the entrance of Depoe Bay which by the time we came home had a little lump on it. Fun ride for everyone. Safe but fin!!!
Date: Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 22:12
Not real sure what the whaling was like today but I think it was good??
Did not get any reports from the whale watch boats today but I was watching a boat about half way out to the first buoy this morning sitting there and watching feeding whales. So I am assuming that later in the morning when the whale boats went out that they had a good day. They are here feeding and hopefully here for the summer.
Date: Friday, May 20, 2011 at 17:37
Scarback is back!!!
Today there were whales around north and south of the harbor in the morning and they stuck around for the whale watch trips in the afternoon as well. One of the whales was the famous "Scarback" as he has been named. He is the whales with a chunk out of his back and he sure likes Depoe Bay as he has been coming back for years upon years now around this time. It was good to see him again and the folks on the many Tradewinds trips today enjoyed seeing his as well.

Whales everywhere in morning...
gone by afternoon
In the morning hours we had at least three critters around the Depoe Bay area and then by the time the whale watch trips began to go they were gone or just hiding. This time of year sometimes it can be feast or starvation. That will all end when our yearly locals begin to show up and begin feeding in the area. We have seen some feeding already this spring only to se them gone for a day and then return.
Date: Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 15:42
Not a whale to be seen yesterday...
There were whales today when the fishing boats left in the early morning...
there were more whales around the fishing boats while they were fishing this morning...
there were more whales around the cruise boats this afternoon
Amazing how one day makes a difference. No whales yesterday on a beautiful cruise day and several cruises out to find them. Today they were everywhere....all day long.

Not a good whale day
From what I heard it was not a good whale day but it sure was one of the flatest oceans you might ever sea in May. It really looked fantastic out there then the rain came. The ocean remained as flat as your kitchen floor but there was a little thunder in the area and then an absolute downpour for about an hour. We ran two trips and the rain came during the 2nd trip but the end game was not any whales in the area today. Tomorrow is another day with another nice ocean in the forecast.
Date: Monday, May 16, 2011 at 13:51
No boats out today
A pokey day in Depoe Bay. The whales were alone to take the day off as well.
Date: Sunday, May 15, 2011 at 15:19
One trip out before it started to rain
We got one trip in on this real nice ocean day but just before the trip ended it started to rain...real hard. We did see whales though so it was a good day. It was a momma and the baby going by today so good sighting for our crew aboard the boat today.
Date: Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 17:19
Good Whale Watching Today
Another good day to watch whales and they cooperated also with several critters right out in front of the harbor. Easy to find and the folks had lots of time to get good Kodak moments and some good memories of their whale watch adventure. It sure seems like we have some of the summer time whales already in the area which is good for this time of year. We hope they stay in the area for the summer into the fall.
Date: Friday, May 13, 2011 at 15:34
Sorry...no report in today
We did have a couple of cruises out today I was told but was not around later to get that report. Saw one of our boats heading north so I hope that was where sighting were seen. They have been around the past few weeks except for one day so I can only hope our guys were successful in finding the whales. More later if I hear anything.
Date: Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 15:21
A little wind but two whales showed up
Was a real nice ocean but later in the trip the wind began to come up but the whales did not disappoint. We had two of them right by the boat and they put on a nice show for the folks. Wind never seems to bother the whales.
Date: Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 15:26
Wild waters today cancels the whale watching
The marine forecast called for a front to hit the coast today but it was never suppose to be as heavy a front as it was. The ocean only had a slight swell on it this morning but then the heavy winds came and really roughed things considerably. Anyhow, no whale watching for the day.
Date: Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 15:56
Better weather...better whale watching
Had a nice ocean today as the winds were way down and a nice sunny day produced whales on both of our trips out on the water. There was even a mom and her offspring today which are always much fun to view. Especially if mom wants to show the little one off.
Date: Monday, May 9, 2011 at 16:02
No whales found today
Windy and choppy out there today which certainly was part of the reason we saw no whales around the area today. It was a tough day but tomorrow is another day and hopefully with less wind.
Date: Sunday, May 8, 2011 at 13:46
Only one lonesome whale today
One real nice cruise out today with quite few of the Tradewinds faithful on but we were only fortunate enough to see one whale and as the skippers say he was not a very good whale. There are good whales and not so good whales. The good whales put on a good performance for the folks and the bad whales try to escape being seen at all. One not so good whale is better then none at all.
Happy Mothers Day to all you moms out there.
Date: Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 15:39
Whales in the area today again
Quite a few whales in the area today some on the south end, some right out front and another one up north around Boiler Bay. That is good news for the summer whale watching as we are hopeful that these guys are our resident models who will be around for the rest of the summer.
Date: Friday, May 6, 2011 at 14:28
Resident whales and the cows and calves
Sounded like out there today that the whale watch crowd got to see not only a feeding resident whale but one of the straggling cows and calves were moving slowly by as well. ZThis is the time of year that the late arriving mother and offspring go by and there should be quite a few more here in May. It is really a cool site to se mom and the really small as far as whales go calve swimming just under its mother. This is the time of year to witness that most preferably @ Tradewinds.
Sounds like the brand new Tacklebuster might just be arriving this weekend so come down ad see the newest addition of the Tradewinds fleet the brand new 50 foot Delta Tacklebuster. People say it is really a good looker.
Date: Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 16:23
No whale watch trips today
No whale watch trips on the books for the day. It was a beautiful ocean with a little wet stuff in the area but not many mid-week people around Depoe Bay this day. The weekend sounds like decent ocean weather so come on down for a good whale show with Tradewinds.
Date: Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 16:53
One quite shy whale today
Only one whale around the area today and we had to work hard to see him the times that we did as he was a real shy one. Some are that way as they are new to the boat thing and they do their best to escape the boats and being seen. So it was not the best whale watching but it is what it is once in a while.
Date: Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 16:50
Back out watching whales today
Two large trips out to see the whales and we did good today with two in the area down south of the harbor a mile or so. Good performing guys to as they put on a good performance for the folks on board. The ocean was nice but got a little windy and chilly for the 2nd trip of the day.
Date: Monday, May 2, 2011 at 16:51
Monday is the whales day off...so...
No trips today
Actually it got a little to windy around the NOON hour so we gave the whales the day off. It was the right thing to do. We'll be back at 'em tomorrow.
Date: Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 15:25
Super ocean....super whale watching
Just a beautiful ocean with flat water, sunny skies and a warm breeze greeted the folks today and the whales did not disappoint as well. Several of them in the inshore waters just on the north side of Depoe Bay and they put on good shows for the folks. The whales the past week have all been in the shallow waters near the shoreline which usually means they are beginning their feeding cycle. If there is food around which there appears to be they hopefully will make this there home for the summer.
Date: Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 15:10
Update of afternoon whale watching
Yes we did indeed see whales today on the whale watch trips.
Date: Saturday, April 30, 2011 at 14:01
Beautiful day to watch whales
Not sure however what the results were today as I heard nothing that was going on out there. I do know that in the mid-morning hours there were some whales just off out in front of Depoe Bay so there are some around. I just hope the many folks who took whale watch trips with us today were able to track some of them down. Nice ocean and beautiful blue sky day here in Depoe Bay.
Date: Friday, April 29, 2011 at 10:47
Everything delayed 24 hours including the wedding
No whale watching today as the ocean is very windy today so we had to cancel our whale cruises for the day. We even had a wedding at sea today we also had to put off till tomorrow. The Royal wedding today in England had nice weather and we will have it for tomorrow.
Date: Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 14:03
No whale watching activities today
After a nice beginning to the morning tuned into a downpour with rain into the middle of the afternoon. Now it is beginning to clear up but to late for any whale cruises today. Should be getting back into the action tomorrow and certainly by the weekend with good and steady improving weather predicted.
Date: Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 12:49
Better but not better enough
The ocean is better but needs to be better yet to take families and such out on the ocean to view whales. It is terribly windy out there and lots of white caps to make it not very likely to see whales or view them very well even if we would be lucky enough to find them. So we stayed home. We always try to make the best decisions for our guests as far as being successful whether it is fishing or whale watching.
Friday thru the weekend looks like very much improved ocean weather so make your plans for those days.
Date: Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 13:10
Another day of bad weather
Just another day of large swells, a little wet with wind in the area. Might last another day or two. Will let you know wen we resume ocean activities.
Date: Monday, April 25, 2011 at 07:01
Whale watching tours cancelled early today
No ocean activities for Monday. Very wet, windy and extremely rough ocean conditions exist today. We will let you know when things clear up.
Date: Sunday, April 24, 2011 at 10:44
No whale watching today
Ocean weather changing
Does not look like a nice day out in front of Depoe Bay today as the wind chop is growing by the minute and the wind is howling. Not a nice day to be out there....reserved for only the brave at heart.
Happy Easter everyone from Tradewinds-Depoe Bay
Date: Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 12:40
Whales in the area today
Multiple whales in the area and again they were in close to the shoreline. That means from past information passed down that they are more then likely feeding in the area and they would not be here if there was not food to chew on. Hopefully we have a few of the local guys in town and will be around thru the summer. Sounds like decent weather for Easter Sunday.
Date: Friday, April 22, 2011 at 14:03
No whale report this afternoon I could find but....
quite a few critters around the shallows this morning.
The wind came up and the waters became a little choppy it looked like this afternoon but this morning we had quite a number of whales stretched all the way from 3-4 miles south of the harbor to 7-8 miles north. They were all sighted in the shallow waters which hopefully means they are feeding and remaining in our area since they obviously found some good tasting morsels to chew on. It is that time of year when some of the locals might be showing up.
Date: Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 15:07
Thar be whales
Well the whales after a few days absence showed up today as we had three of them in more shallow water feeding off one of the points here in the area. That is a good sign as it means some of the whales whether migrating still or not are stopping off to feed. That would mean there is feed in the area. Hopefully they will call this home and stay around for say 4-5 moths.
Date: Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 14:03
Same as yesterday's excuse
It does appear that the northerly migration is just about over and now we wait till early May begin to see some of our resident whales begin to show. Until then things will be a little on the hit and miss side. We might go a week or so with good sightings and then a lull for a number of days. We will keep you informed.
Date: Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 15:16
Whale watching slow today
We might be in that in-between time where the main group of northerly migrating whales as get to the end of April have gone by and now we wait for the stragglers which include the cows and the newly born calves. They should be along very shortly. Also we are looking for the first arrivals of our resident whales which historically begin their arrival sometimes in May. Fear not....there are great days here to come thru the rest of spring into the summer months.

Not totally sure but the whales were around today I believe?
There were whales in the morning that the fishing boats saw and from was observed in watching the whale watch boats all together in one place in the afternoon which normally means they found something. Beautiful weather and calm seas for the rest of the week.
Date: Sunday, April 17, 2011 at 14:54
Same story as yesterday
Whales showing up quite often in the morning hours but not in the afternoon time slots. The same story as yesterday. No reason that I know of to explain it either. Tomorrow is another day.
Date: Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 16:10
Morning whale watching good....
...afternoon not so good
Gray whales & Orca whales in the morning as the fishing boats had great sightings on the way to the fishing grounds but the afternoon trips designed to view them did not have much luck. That happens...one minute they are there the next minute they are gone.....
tomorrow is another day on a great sounding ocean.

Whale watching today ( a tiny bit wet)...
...sounds like great weather for the weekend
We will be whale watching today as the ocean is looking better by the hour and the weekend looks fantastic so make those plans with Tradewinds, the Oregon Coast's very best.
Date: Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 16:29
Great weather for the Coast Saturday thru the middle of next week
The weather this weekend thru at least the middle of next week looks bright with virtually no swell on the ocean and that means great fishing and whale watching. Maybe, just maybe spring is about ready to kick ol' man winter out the door. It is the first good sign so far so & we are hoping
Date: Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 10:50
No whaling today
We will be weathered out today AGAIN but there is good news on the horizon or even closer then the horizon. Friday (tomorrow) looks much better then today and the weekend into the middle of next week according to the extended marine forecast looks really nice. You can never count on things going exactly as predicted especially this time of year but they have been right on with all of the storm forecasting so we hope they are correct with the nice weather forecast as well. Make your plans folks.

One boat out looking for whales....
....from the latest information not any luck today
You know even Tradewinds has those days once in a while and we are not afraid to report it when it happens. Not much luck on finding whales today as it being a bit windy on a decent ocean still hampered our efforts. There are 25,000 of these critters that paddle by here on this northerly migration from the Mexican waters to the northern waters in Alaska and during that time there are holes in their migration runs. When that happens they are just not found on some of our trips. We are about 95% and above successful and today was one of those days in that 5%. Some days you will not see them on a first trip and then the 2nd trip of the day they are everywhere. Sorry folks....
Date: Monday, April 11, 2011 at 13:29
ROUGH again today
Too rough to whale watch today but it sure is a beautiful sunny day. Some unsettled weather from time to time for the rest of the week so it will be day to day as decisions are made on if we can go or not. We will try to keep you informed.
Date: Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 08:13
It's early in the day but probably a wash of our whale watch activities for this day
The fishing boats stayed tied to the dock so I expect the same thing will occur for the whale watch activities for Sunday as well. The wind, rain and rough waters returned this morning and it probably will be quite on the "iffy" side for the next few days. We will keep you updated.
Date: Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 16:18
Five packed whale watch trips out to see the whales today
Over a hundred and twenty-five folks packed the Tradewinds whale watch boats and ventured out finally on a beautiful ocean to see the migrating Gray whales. See whales is exactly what they did. Many pods of whales were going by today and it was a great day for the many folks on board. Whale watching should be good thru the summer now into the late fall. Even after the northerly migration is over here in three weeks or so we should be graced with our resident whales showing up and even some Orca whales that seem to show around mid-May into June. Come on down and join the fun.
Date: Friday, April 8, 2011 at 15:39
No whale watching today.....
...be ready for Saturday as the weather looks good
Weird ocean today. The swell which was predicted to go down never did so we were stuck with a rough ride out to the first buoy. Rather the the folks having to experience that we cancelled for the day. Tomorrow calls for a 7-foot swell which is a really nice ocean so get down here as Sunday sounds possibly "iffy" again.
Date: Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 16:36
Looking decent for Friday and better yet for Saturday
Whale watch folks who might be a little frustrated with the weather along with the rest of us you may just be in luck with OK looking weather for Friday and even better for Saturday. Sunday looks "iffy" again so lets roll these next few days while we have a chance with some better weather.
Date: Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 06:03
Whale watching for Saturday looking good for weather
Saturday looks like the real good day from the forecast they are showing now with building weather and seas for Sunday. So if you want to go cruising for whales book with us for Saturday as it looks like a decent day.
Date: Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 14:09
No whaling again today
Cancellations again this morning for all of our ocean whale watch activities and probably another one tomorrow as well. Friday looks better and we are hopeful for the weekend. Time will tell and we will let you know day to day what things look like.
Date: Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 16:15
No whaling again today
The ocean this morning was surprisingly decent but by the time mid-morning came around the bad forecast which was late arriving finally arrived. The result was a cancellation of everything scheduled for the day. The forecast for the next few days a little "iffy" but we will as always let you know. We must keep up our reputation as the fair and honest best forecaster on the coast. You will hear it here.
Date: Monday, April 4, 2011 at 09:56
Whale watching for the day more then likely cancelled
Nothing from anyone official on this next statement but I am willing to make a guess that any whale watch activities for this day (Monday) have been cancelled. The ocean has no swell so to speak but is very wet, very windy and tons of wind chop. Does not make for whale watching FUN!. Will let you know AGAIN when the latest in a two month long series of storms comes to an end.
Date: Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 16:55
Good whale watching today
The whale watching was really good the first couple of trips but unsure about the final trip as no information was available. The whales were in bunches in groups of 2-4 the first couple of trips we heard which provided some good camera shots for the folks on board. They were not very far offshore as the spouts were visible from the shoreline but of course much better up close on the boats. They were about a mile or so offshore. Three trips today and full boat loads for all three trips.
Date: Sunday, April 3, 2011 at 09:57
Whale watching looks good for today and Monday....
...after that another stretch of forecasted bad weather
If you like whale watching on reasonably nice oceans Sunday and Monday look like decent ocean days.....
another series of storms bringing heavy swells to the area is forecasted.
Will give you the whale watch reports for the day later in the afternoon.
Date: Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 18:22
Another rough day....
.... but looking better for Sunday & Monday
No whales today at least none we could go out and see due to another rough ocean day but we are hopeful for tomorrow. The forecast is much better at least that is what they are telling us. See ya tomorrow....Suppose to be sunny also!!
Date: Friday, April 1, 2011 at 14:57
No whaling again today
Another not-so-nice day getting in and out of Depoe Bay with a messy bar even though the waters outside the #1 buoy were looking really nice. The problem was getting out there and it was just a little too rough to do so. Hopefully tomorrow....
Date: Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 16:21
Day #3 of NO whaling
Another wet, windy and rough ocean day which means no whale watch boats again today. Hopefully a break in the weather will come our way for the weekend.
Date: Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 13:26
No whaling again today
We did get out on a morning fishing trip but felt that it was a bit to wet and windy to take whale watch passengers offshore to find the whales. We will look at it again for tomorrow. Keep in touch at the Tradewinds site for all the latest information, whale reports, and the best ocean weather source on the coast. It will be first hand and honest reporting.
Date: Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 11:19
Another windy, rainy rough ocean day
No whale excursions today as we have another one of the first of spring not-so-nice-days. Suppose to be much better tomorrow (so they say?). See ya then...Whale trips start @ NOON.
Date: Monday, March 28, 2011 at 11:41
Whaling cancelled for the day
Things got pretty rough in the middle grounds between the bell and the channel crossing in the late morning so we called off the whale excursions for the day. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day.
Date: Sunday, March 27, 2011 at 08:55
No whale watching adventures today due to adverse weather
Really windy, wet and rough ocean weather has cancelled everything for the day. Keep up-to-date on the weather outlook right here on the coasts best weather and ocean report information.
Date: Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 16:09
Tradewinds whale watch bonanza
Over 200 whale watch enthusiasts boarded our vessels today and had a great time viewing the northerly migration whales as they were running north only about a mile or two offshore. The ocean really cooperated for us today despite the weather forecast and all onboard had a great time. Lots of whales and lots of fun. Should be good migratory whale watching clear thru the end of April. Come down and join in on the fun with Tradewinds the Oregon coasts #1 whale watch charter organization.
Date: Friday, March 25, 2011 at 15:25
No whaling today
The ocean outside the first buoy a half mile out looked beautiful from a distance. The ocean from a half mile out into the channel was a mess. Bottom line: no whale watch trips for the day. Hopefully tomorrow.
Date: Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 14:37
After the storm...
the boats got out
We had a quick hitter heavy storm hit the area around 10am and then an hour later it was all gone. The whale watch vessels were not scheduled to get out until NOON so by the time that time came along things out on the water were fine. Not sure what the results were but will try to get back with you later on that.
Date: Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 14:41
The folks obviously know where to go for whale watching....Tradewinds
Today was a terrific day on the water with lots of whales both on the migration routes offshore and inshore next to the shoreline as well. Our boats today were running solidly from 11am till 4pm taking out over 150+ people all told ( I lost count) and the sightings were just great. The ocean was flat and NO rain to speak of except for a late afternoon shower which lasted just a couple of minutes. Not even enough to get you wet. Another huge day on target for tomorrow but fear not as we have plenty of boats to get as many of you out there who want to go in a comfortable non-crowded condition. The best boats, the cleanest boats, and the fastest trip out to where the whales are...only @ Tradewinds Depoe Bay.
Date: Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 15:11
Hard to find those guys today
Rainy and windy and semi-choppy out there. Put that together makes finding whales a difficult task and it was today. The wind blows down the spouts and the rain decreases visibility as well. It just was not a good day. Not sure exactly what the final score for today was on spotting whales but it surely was not like yesterday sightings which were great. Tomorrow will be different.
Date: Monday, March 21, 2011 at 12:17
Forecast for today was a lie
A nice forecast for the 1st day of the week turned out not to be the case is it is windy, wet and moderately rough on the ocean waters. Suppose to better tomorrow (so they say).
Date: Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 14:02
Good whale watching today...not great but good
The ocean was real nice and then the rains came about half way into the trips lowering the visibility. The whales were found here and there but not as much as they were at the start of the trips. No word on the later afternoon trips how they were going. The whales are out there about 3-4 miles offshore and were out there most of the morning where the fishing boats saw them and then in the early afternoon. There are lulls in their migration as they pass by Depoe Bay but we can normally find them during the trips.
Date: Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 12:33
Rough ocean bar forces cancellation of todays activities
....Sunday should be just fine
Tough getting out across the Depoe Bay bar this morning and afternoon and we were forced to cancel our ocean activities for the day. Sunday looks better as the forecast calls for real nice conditions for Sunday into the middle of next week.
Date: Friday, March 18, 2011 at 06:39
Weather lookin' better
The weekend weather is beginning to look much better as we approach the 1st of three weeks or so of the spring breaks. Should be good whale watching as long as the forecasts are correct indicating the improvement.
Date: Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 14:59
Start thinking about Sunday
We are still three days out but Sunday into the first part of next week looks much better then this weeks weather with Saturday right now a little iffy. We will keep you all up to date as things have and do change as we get closer to the start of the first of a series of spring breaks.
Date: Monday, March 14, 2011 at 16:30
Whale watching started out great a week ago until....
the weather turned bad
Let us hope for a quick return to some good weather as the last trip we had was a week ago and the whale watching was fantastic. We have a new boat coming up from San Diego and he said that all the way up he saw whales every day so we should have great sightings thru the month of April AS SOON as we get some better whale watch weather. We will let you know when that happens.
Date: Saturday, March 12, 2011 at 07:08
Weather not looking good
The weekend weather to be honest looks not very good at all. Sounds like heavy seas, rain and wind for the extended period. Contact the office for up-to-the-minute present conditions.
Date: Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 21:07
Whale watch weather weekend update?
Not sure what to tell you as of Thursday night but the weather outlook is "iffy" so the best action for you folks who have reservations or have in mind to drive to the coast this weekend to whale watch is to keep in contact with our office. They will have the up-to-date information you will need on the weekend ocean weather forecast.
Date: Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 09:04
Whale watching ocean weather issues here at the coast once again
Have some ocean weather issue here once again after last weekends great weather. Will give you some updates as the week progresses.
Date: Monday, March 7, 2011 at 19:22
The skipper of our whale watch boat today made a dry humor comment about the sightings being there were more whales to watch then passengers on his vessel. It is a Monday, a few weeks still before the spring breaks begin so it is normal to have small loads on the weekday trips. There were ten passengers on this trip so that would mean that they saw at least how many whales? Boy, is that GREAT northerly migration whale watching. They are here !!!
Date: Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 18:03
Whales and ore Whales
If there was any doubt that the northerly migration was upon us came true today with a 2nd day of many-many whales offshore from Depoe Bay making their swing up thru our area. Great sightings for all the folks on board so it is the time for the next six weeks or so if you want to come down and witness this historic migration of the Gray whales. It is the oldest migration known to man. You can witness it "ONLY" at Tradewinds Depoe Bay.
Date: Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 22:13
The northerly migration is on
Get your tickets folks as for the next 6-7 weeks we will have many-many whales zipping by Depoe Bay as the return voyage of the whales returning from the Mexican waters has begun. We had great sighting out in front of Depoe Bay saturday and should be good thru the month of April.
Date: Friday, March 4, 2011 at 11:56
Sounds like improving weather coming our way
The final windy push might be today and tonight and then Saturday thru the middle part of next week looks like much improved weather. The whales should not be far away as this is the beginning of the time that we start looking for their arrival.
Date: Monday, February 28, 2011 at 15:46
Bad weather at the coast
The ocean weather is not good right now so keep up to date with your local weather source or just watch this website and we will let you know when things improve.
Date: Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 15:35
Whales were here in the morning...
but gone during the afternoon
There was one whale out around 40 fathoms in the morning and another in real shallow about 2 miles south of Depoe Bay also in the morning. Do you think we could find them in the afternoon? Not today... At least after a few weeks of down time there are a few starting to show on the northerly migration already. Real good sighting are just a week or so away.
Date: Friday, February 25, 2011 at 17:29
Nice day on tap for Saturday
We are getting closer to the historical start of the Northern migration so there might be a few around out there who got out of the Mexican waters first. It will be a bright sunny day for a cruise so with more bad weather moving in for Sunday and the first part of next week Saturday is the time.
Date: Monday, February 21, 2011 at 18:23
A good weekend on the horizon
The whale sightings were sparse this past weekend as we are in-between the southerly and northerly migrations. They have shown up early in the past and you might just want to take advantage of the nice weather forecasted right now for the weekend. We will keep you up to date on any whale sightings information that comes our way. Make your future plans for the middle of March as historically that is the beginning of the northerly march of the whales by our area.
Date: Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 15:50
We did get out today but not a good whale day
We did get out on some cruises today but the southerly migration is obviously over as we await for the round trip of the whales when they come back this way on their northerly stint. Historically that begins around the middle of March so stay tuned for the reports.
Date: Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at 16:31
Still hoping for a nice weekend
The weekend is looking a little "iffy"right now but sure is looking better then what we have gone thru the past few days. So we are still hopeful with a little more change that this weekend might just shape up OK. It is suppose to be DRY so all we need is a bit more cooperation in the ocean weather and we will have a good weekend. More information as it becomes available.
Date: Monday, February 14, 2011 at 17:28
Very messy weather here right now so give us a few days
Very high winds, driving rain and rough seas are going to be with us for a few days so give us till Wednesday and we will be back with a report on how things will be shaping up for the late week into the weekend. Hopefully this will settle out a bit but don't fear as Spring is in the front window.
Date: Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 18:38
Whales will be showing here real soon on the Northerly migration
We are open for business and ready to go
The Northerly migration should be firing up here in just a few more weeks so make plans to come down and board a Tradewinds boat and go out and see the whales as they head back to their northerly feeding grounds.
The office is open and we are taking reservations for the spring and summer whale watch seasons so give us a call and book your spot. The Portland Sportsman Show is now over after a five day run in Portland the past five days and this is always the unofficial beginning of the spring and summer season at Tradewinds.
See ya real soon....
Date: Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 20:11
Had lots of whale watchers today but the weather did not cooperate
Over a hundred whale watchers were on the books today to go and see the whale migration but the storm which was forecasted more towards afternoon hit the coastal area in the mid-morning and we were forced to cancel. We will get this weather situation turned in our favor here real soon.
Date: Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 08:56
Southerly migration stragglers still going by....
Northerly migration begins mid-March
The Southerly migration is mostly over by this time of the year but there are still a few stragglers going by from time to time. Better if you have a little flexibility in your whale watch schedule to wait till mid-March as that is when we will begin to see them coming back the other way with the cows and calves following behind in late April into May. We will then start to see the local guys begin to drop off and spend the late spring and summer with us beginning in the later part of May thru October. We have the nicest cruise boats for you to feel comfortable and enjoy the whales in their natural environment off our coastline. Make plans to sail with us in 2011. We have multiple cruise options you will be looking for and the most knowledgeable skippers to not only find them for you but tell you about their history on the oldest migration known to man.

Starting to get in full swing here at Tradewinds as Spring is in our view
Bottom fishing inshore and offshore trips going well
Sportsman Show in Portland NOW thru this Sunday
We are gearing up for the 2011 season and the weather is beginning to improve and the fishing is really good for Lingcod as well as the rockfish. We have offshore deep water "Big Lingcod" trips going on now as we hit the deep water spots around 11 miles offshore right out in front of Depoe Bay. Great trips for the "Big Boys" and we are geared up and ready to GO. The inshore 5-hr trips are also catching nice size Lingcod as the spawning Lingcod are in on the inner reefs making for this years hatching. Make your reservations over the Tradewinds website or call the office for trip reservations Best time to find someone in the office is between 10am and NOON. If no answer leave a short message and someone will get back to you ASAP. Regular hours return March 1st.
