The weekend looks iffy
An "iffy weekend of weather" looms in front of us but the start of next week appears to show a stretch of nicer weather on the horizon. So if the whales are still around the area next week looks like a good time.

Don't hold your breath.......
Don't hold your breath the next few days for any whale watching as we have another in a series of storms lately which has pretty much all but shut us down except for a day or so here and there. Things look windy, rainy and the the ocean looks fairly rough for the next several days so the whale watching is out of the question right now. l

Current Report:
Nice ocean, good whale watching
The day before they say the next ocean storm is coming saw a great cruising ocean and two whales out and about still doing their thing here around the Depoe Bay area. Pretty much a windless day which is suppose to change here in a few hours and a great day to view whales doing the things that whales do. Historically we still have a few weeks left to watch them as sometime around the 1st part of November they get a moving to the South. Watch the weather happenings on this channel and come down and see them.

Another nice ocean and whale day
The ocean was really nice again today and the whales on the South side of town also cooperated again putting on another nice show. Warm temperatures and balmy skies made it that much better as we are hopeful that the forecast is not true but we will let you know tomorrow.
Date: Monday, October 19, 2009 at 16:16
Current Report:
What a day, What a show
Could the ocean be any better then today even in the summer?
NO
It was a spectacular day with a totally blue sky on display, bright sunshine, summer time temperatures and the whale watching was spectacular as well. One whale North today and actually went into one of the natural bays that we have on either side of the harbor. The 2nd trip we went South and found one whale down off of Gull Rock which was very friendly to our cruise boat soon to be joined by another very non-bashful whale. On the third trip we went South again and found the two friendly whales again and on the way home picked up on the Northern whale heading South. It was quite the day.

Current Report:
Whales still in the area Sunday
Several trips out Sunday on a decent ocean after a weeks worth of rough oceans and the whales were still in our area and putting on good shows for the folks. They were on the South side of Depoe Bay and seemed to be still feeding in the same area all day long.
Date: Saturday, October 17, 2009 at 14:06
Current Report:
Tomorrow will be the day
Tomorrow will be a decent day so if whale watching is on your plate you'd better get here tomorrow because there is some bad weather reported for next week as well. The whales are still out there as we saw them on our fishing trip this morning before the winds came back so the first cruise will be around noon tomorrow.
Date: Friday, October 16, 2009 at 13:52
Current Report:
No whale watching again today
Hopefully the weekend brings us some better weather and from what the forecast is saying the best day of the two appears to be Sunday. There were a couple of whales just South of Depoe Bay this morning down off one of the park pull outs and some folks were down there watching with their field glasses.

Current Report:
Weekend looking much better
The weather gets in our way thru Friday but the weekend forecast is looking much better. So you can make some plans to get out and see the final week or two of the fall whale watch season this weekend as the forecast for the weekend looks do-able.
Date: Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 06:30
Current Report:
No whale watch trips today

Current Report:
Whale watching cancelled for Tuesday
All whale watching activities are cancelled for Tuesday as we have gale force wind advisories and heavy rain predicted for the next few days. We are hopeful for better conditions by the weekend so keep in touch with us and we will let you know when things improve.
Date: Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 06:10
Current Report:
Whales easy to find Monday
The whales were in the same place Monday as they were Sunday which made viewing and finding them quite easy on this day. We expect a few days of windy-rainy weather so we hope when it clears that they found a good spot to feed the past few days and they are back again in the same spot. It was a good day for the three trips we sent out there as the whale watching season will be winding down here in the next three weeks or so. We will historically have a lull in sightings from sometime in November till around the Christmas break when the migration will be going thru our area. Not that there are NO whales in November but just harder to find.
Date: Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 15:57
Current Report:
Whales viewed in clear water
There were three whales in the area all down under neath Otter Crest which is south of Depoe Bay. The skipper of our whale watch boat was saying that the water down there was so clear that they could actually view the whale feeding under the water near the bottom. Spectacular!!!
Date: Saturday, October 10, 2009 at 16:07
Current Report:
The whales were back everywhere today
After a few days of hard to find whales today they were back in mass in the area both North and South and even offshore aways. The ocean was beautiful and good groups of the folks on the Tradewinds boats out to see them having a great time.
Date: Friday, October 9, 2009 at 14:51
Current Report:
Good day for sightings but NO sightings
We had a good whale watching trip out to see the whales today but even though we saw one earlier in the hour before we departed right out in front of the harbor we failed to find him. It was a decent ocean and we expect real nice ocean conditions for the weekend so they are still here but they are trying to be elusive. Come down and join us for the weekend.
Date: Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 15:02
Current Report:
No report on whale sightings today
We did run one cruise today but no report met my ears on any sightings. It was pretty foggy out there today which makes finding whales a little more difficult. The weekend sounds like a good time to come down and see the whales as nice weather is in the forecast before some potential forecasted bad weather hits the area early next week.
Date: Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 13:17
Current Report:
Whales North & South of the harbor today
The day was a little drizzly and overcast but the ocean was fairly nice for the whale watching with sightings both to the North and the South of Depoe Bay. We are coming towards the end of the whale season as historically the whales begin leaving our are towards the end of this month. So you had better get here quick if you want to see the last of the 2009 season. They will return next spring and we do have the migratory whales here beginning around Christmas time thru March.
Date: Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 17:48
Current Report:
If there were NO whales they missed a great day
No reports on the whale watching today even though we had crowds of people out on the boats to see them on a beautiful day and ocean as well. Tradewinds had 3 or 4 trips out today but I was not able to find out any information on the trips. I don't want to tell you things that I am guessing on but I did notice the boats out whale watching were down South on all the trips if that gives us a CLUE.
Date: Monday, October 5, 2009 at 14:24
Current Report:
Great ocean, Great day, Great whale watching
The whale watching was great today as we took three trips out to see them this morning thru the afternoon. They were down South today as we had to go a few miles South to see them on one trip and then they moved up more towards there usual grounds closer to the harbor. They reportedly were really in serious feeding mode the past few days really concentrating all day long on their appetite. What that means I am not sure.
Date: Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 17:50
Current Report:
Sunday afternoon whales
Good whale watching Sunday afternoon on a sun drenched day with a little wiggle to the ocean. Finding the whales proved to not be a problem for the Tradewinds fleet as we rounded them up for another great day of whale sightings.
Date: Friday, October 2, 2009 at 14:29
Current Report:
Two whale trips out this afternoon
The ocean mellowed out around mid-morning and the whales did not disappoint on two whale watch adventures in the afternoon hours. Good multiple sightings and good times had by all.

Current Report:
Whales at it again
We were back at it again today whale watching and the whales were out there putting on good shows again as well. We are hopeful that the weather will hold thru the weekend.
Date: Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at 13:36
Current Report:
No whales today
No whales today at least from a boat. The ocean was quite rough today but I did see many whale watchers watching from a distance from some of the lookouts in the area. So they are still here. With a decent forecast tomorrow we should be back out there with them.
Date: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 14:45
Current Report:
One whale watch trip came home early
The ocean actually came down a bunch in the afternoon for a short time but about half way thru the trip it began to grow again so the skipper brought everyone back in early. No information on the whale sightings on the shortened trip.
Date: Monday, September 28, 2009 at 10:45
Current Report:
Another ROUGH Day
Another day tied to the docks as the ocean continues to be "cranky". We will let you know when things begin to improve.
Date: Sunday, September 27, 2009 at 15:17
Current Report:
Too much wind and to much swell
No whale watching today as it just was not going to be any fun out there on this day. The ocean was not going to cooperate today. It will be day to day so keep in touch as when we do resume the whales will still be there.
Date: Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 20:44
Current Report:
We did go whale watching but....
No whale watch information today as I just didn't hear any. We did get out for a few hours but then it just got to windy and rough in the afternoon. They were out there though.
Date: Friday, September 25, 2009 at 13:46
Current Report:
Windy but another good day of whale watching
The sunshine more then made up for the windy day and then good whale watching on top of that made it even better. Good whale watching continues thru this month of September and hopefully thru October as well.
Date: Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 14:51
Current Report:
A little windy but good whale watching
The forecast is for windy days at least in the afternoon for a few days so get here early if you want good conditions. We made one trip out today and it was great sightings and then it got a little choppy with the afternoon winds.

Nothing new to tell you.....
Whale watching Summer of 2009 has been so good that right now I have nothing new to tell you. It was good again today with multiple whales and all putting on good shows for the passengers. I try to think of something new that I heard today to tell you but I have just about used up all of the words to describe it. It has been a great spring summer and the fall is just as good. Still about a month left of good whale watching.
Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 14:28
Current Report:
Whales down South today
Good whale watching on a fairly nice sunny day with the whales feeding on the shallow reefs just on the South side of the Depoe Bay area. The sighings are from multiple whales and should be good for another month anyhow. Come on down and enjoy the show.
Date: Monday, September 21, 2009 at 14:26
Current Report:
Beautiful day to watch whales
No wind today like yesterday and the whales were out in their usual playful manner putting on good shows for the folks. There were also plenty of people in town today on this first Monday of the fall season and they took advantage of the sunshine and beautiful ocean to watch whales. It should be good whale watching for at least another month.
Date: Sunday, September 20, 2009 at 17:55
Current Report:
Whale watching still going well
Actually not real sure about the whale watching as the water this afternoon was a little windy and never did hear a report. They still are out there though and should be great viewing thru the month of October.
Date: Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 11:11
Current Report:
Whale reports resume Sunday evening
Will be back on the job reporting on the Depoe Bay whale watching Sunday evening.
Date: Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 16:51
Current Report:
It should be good
Sorry but the whale reports will be somewhat lacking for the next few weeks as vacation has taken our reporter to parts unknown. When we can get some information we will try to relay it to you folks. The whale watching has been great and there is no reason why it should not stay that way all the way thru October.
Date: Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 14:14
Current Report:
After some bad weather days were at it again
Beautiful day on the ocean and the whales were out and about around the Depoe Bay area. The cruise people had a good day watching them feed next to the shoreline today. Fall seems to be in the air on the coast so bring a jacket with you as it can be a little chilly on the water even in the sunshine in the afternoon.
Date: Monday, September 7, 2009 at 15:03
Current Report:
Yes, we did get to go after all
The ocean settled down a little quicker then we expected today. We were able to run one Labor Day trip out in the afternoon before some of the folks headed for home after the long holiday weekend.
Date: Monday, September 7, 2009 at 09:22
Current Report:
No whales today...that is to rough to go out and see them
For the 2nd day in a row the ocean was too rough for any and all ocean activities. We expect everything to be back and normal and good-to-go tomorrow with good ocean forecast into next weekend.
Date: Sunday, September 6, 2009 at 08:47
Current Report:
Bad weather makes for no whale watching today
Heavy winds and swells and some periods of heavy rain has cancelled all activities for the day. Lets hope for a change for tomorrow.
Date: Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 15:06
Current Report:
The ocean got better, and better and better
The weather was suppose to be terrible so the whale watching was suppose to be a wash-out today. Instead the ocean got better as the day went on especially after the early morning rain stopped and the sunshine came out. It was a warm day and the whales were easy to find especially after the winds dropped down in mid-morning. It was a surprise but we ran five whale watch trips with lots of enthusiastic passengers out to see the whales.
Date: Friday, September 4, 2009 at 16:21
Current Report:
Gray whales and Humpback whales
We had it all today on a picture perfect ocean with great trips done only in the Tradewinds way of finding the best whales for the passengers to see. We had Gray whales right out in front of the harbor and at least one and maybe two Humpback whales North of the harbor 3-4 miles. This has to be one of the better summers we have had for whale watching and the good summer weather has not hurt that at all.
Date: Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 16:16
Current Report:
Excellent whale watching
Trip after trip this Thursday the Tradewinds whale watch boats found better and better ocean conditions after a semi-choppy morning which turned into a flat sun drenched afternoon. It was also a great day to watch whales as they were back out in front of the city after a few days of working the feeding grounds North and South of the harbor. Quite a few whales putting on a great show for the folks.
Date: Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 17:32
Current Report:
Whales down South today
Yesterday I reported I believe that the boats had to travel a ways North to find the whales. Today they had to travel about a mile South to find the whales. There into their hide-&-seek mode I guess.
Date: Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 14:39
Current Report:
North we have to travel
The whales are still putting on good shows but we had to travel about a mile North of the harbor area to see the show. For the first time in awhile they have moved a bit to check out some new feeding grounds or a different tasting morsel. They were up a wee-bit North of Fogarty Creek State Park area and in pretty close. There must have ben something really tasty up there for such desperate move.
Date: Monday, August 31, 2009 at 17:31
Current Report:
Windy & choppy day
Only one trip out Monday as it was quite windy and choppy which made locating and viewing whales rather difficult. We did however find the whales on our one trip of the day. Better weather is forecasted for the rest of the week into the holiday weekend.
Date: Sunday, August 30, 2009 at 16:12
Current Report:
Another good whale day amongst other things
The whales were around the area again today as they have been for the better part of the last two and a half months. It has been a great summer for whale watching and as we approach fall it should be just as good right thru towards the end of October. Remember it is not just whales. We have a good supply of seal lions to see every day as they seem to be sleeping on the buoys every day as well as harbor seals, harbor porpoise, sun fish, birds, sharks when the water is warmer and if your lucky an occasional sea turtle. There are others also but every day you can see an abundance of sea life.
Date: Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 13:53
Current Report:
Great numbers of whales to view today
The ocean was nice, the visibility was good and the whales were out there in good numbers for the folks to view. Another great day just like every day we whale watch this entire summer.
Date: Friday, August 28, 2009 at 15:37
Current Report:
Not sure we did any whale watching today
It was a rainy day most of the day long and the boats if they did go out were out on the waters before the heavier rains came in the early afternoon so not much to report today. One thing was for sure and that is that the whales were still out there and easy to find.
Date: Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 15:45
Current Report:
Whale watching great even later in the day with the fog
The whale watching was great again today after a day off due to rough ocean weather even though later in the day the fog rolled in. Even then there are so many whales in the area that finding them proved not to be a problem.
Date: Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 11:16
Current Report:
No whale watching today
No whale watching today due to rough ocean conditions. Tomorrow looks like a very nice day.
Date: Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at 14:40
Current Report:
The ocean is growing but the whales don't mind
We are in for a little bit of a growing swell for Wednesday but then right back down on Thursday as it seems to do in the summer months. So it should only be a minor interruption in the whale watching if any. The whales are still out there and we had a good day today watching them very close to the Depoe Bay harbor. The next time we go they will be right there again.
Date: Monday, August 24, 2009 at 14:58
Current Report:
"Whale-a- Rama"
That is what our cruise boat operator called it today. It was every bit of that. There were several whales immediately outside the channel entrance and a few more out by the entrance buoy to Depoe Bay. There were also several on the north side of Depoe Bay and several more south of the harbor down by Whale Cove. Also some Humpback whales showed up a little further outside in the salmon fishing area as well. Quite the day and presented exclusively at Tradewinds Charters.
Date: Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 13:45
Current Report:
Lots of whales
Once again summer time whale watching was very good today with lots of whales to view just about every direction you might turn. There was one playful whale that was actually swimming under one of the boats surfacing and looking at the folks It then went down under the boat again came back up to view the folks all over again. That was great for the passengers.
Date: Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 14:24
Current Report:
Whale watching Saturday... Not sure?
Not quite sure how the whale watching was on Saturday as it was pretty windy out there today and the bar crossing was a little on the cranky side but I do know that the bigger boats were taking the folks out there. Once past the first buoy it was an OK ocean. I am sure that they were finding the whales as the whales don't care about the cranky bar crossing, the wind, rain or anything. They are always there (well most always).
Date: Friday, August 21, 2009 at 15:32
Current Report:
Another great day of whale watching
Whales just about everywhere on Friday as the best whale watch fleet on the coast gave the folks the choice of the 1-hr or 2-hr trips to see the whales and all of the sights. The 2-hr trips give our customers the options of not just seeing the whales but the beautiful coastline along with the marine mammals that frequent the Depoe Bay area and all of the bird life as well. Get the whale watch 1-hr quick tour or the "kitchen sink tour" only from Tradewinds Depoe Bay.
Date: Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 17:42
Current Report:
As the Captain put it......There are whales everywhere out here today
Where ever you went out off of Depoe Bay today North or South, you were gonna see some whales. All of the resident whales in our area seemed to be spending their morning and afternoon in the same place...right off of Depoe Bay. It was a great day!!!
Date: Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at 14:18
Current Report:
The fog cleared out and the whales appeared
Yes, we are able to find the whales in the fog but it sure is much easier to find them without the fog and the sightings and viewing is so much better. That was today as this mornings fog rolled out of here just a half hour or so before the first cruise of the day and a good day it was. Multiple whales once again graced our whale feeding grounds out in front of Depoe Bay and put on some great shows for the folks.
Date: Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at 15:22
Current Report:
Another foggy whale day
The fog pushed back off the coast around mid-day and the whales (3 of them) were right where they usually are. It was another good day of sightings and the ocean forecast was not as bad as predicted so all had a good time.
Date: Monday, August 17, 2009 at 15:13
Current Report:
Whaling in the Wind
Windy and choppy but we were still able to get a few trips in for the folks having the reservations and we did find the whales. Windy days are not the best days to view the whales as the wind tends to blow down the spouts but it was a decent whale watch day just the same.
Date: Sunday, August 16, 2009 at 12:44
Current Report:
Plenty of whale breath today
A little wind out there today which was just enough to propel the whale spout breath onto the fishing boats and the whale watch boats today. Ughhh!! Anyhow many whales to view on the day including a rather large pod of Humpback whales offshore a few miles. One Gray whale in a curious way has been offshore the past three days or so in the exact same spot and never seems to move. Just doing his/her thing out there what ever it may be. Probably found some super-secret feeding grounds out there its trying to keep secret.
Date: Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 17:49
Current Report:
Lots & Lots of Whales
The final count today from what I was hearing was around 5-7 whales in the vicinity of Depoe Bay harbor and the folks got to get a look at them all. There were also several Humpback whales just offshore. For the 2nd day in a row there were some Gray whales out around the 3-mile mark offshore and this time of year that might be termed as being somewhat curious.
Date: Friday, August 14, 2009 at 12:20
Current Report:
Whales inshore and offshore today
A little different thing going on today as the Gray whales were not only in their customary spots inshore feeding but several were noticed about 2-3 miles offshore as well. It is a little strange to see them out there this time of year. Good whale watching none the same.
Date: Thursday, August 13, 2009 at 13:10
Current Report:
Whales everywhere and a few Humpbacks just offshore
The whale watching right out in front of Depoe Bay was very god with multiple whales out feeding in the rich food areas along the reefs of Depoe Bay. There were also a few Humpbacks spotted out just a few miles West of Depoe Bay as well.
Date: Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 12:55
Current Report:
A littel foggy..a little misty...a little cranky ocean...lots of whales
Well it was not the perfect ocean unless you like choppy somewhat foggy and also a little heavy mist conditions. We were out there showing the folks the whales and the whales don't seem to mind all of the above. The whale watching has been very consistent all summer long as Depoe Bay continues to be a great stopping off point for quite a number of the Gray whales in the summer months to feed. It will be a great time to observe them pretty much all the way through October.
Date: Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 15:25
Current Report:
The fog is back but we found the whales anyhow
We woke to some drizzle and some local fog this morning but the whale watch boats know where to look for the whales so they were not hard to find with some fairly decent visibility out there. Later in the day the fog moved further off the coast. So, it was a good whale watch day with around three of the "critters" out there putting on some good shows for the folks.

Yes, it was a little misty rainy out there today
Some light mist of Oregon sunshine was falling on the crowds today but it didn't seem to make the people care as the usual crowds of folks were out cruising with Tradewinds and taking in the great sightings of the Gray whales today. As they usually are in the summer the whales were close by and put on good shows for the folks.

Good inshore whale watching but better offshore
The Gray whale watching was really great today with several in the immediate Depoe Bay area but the real spectacular stuff was offshore with the salmon boats morning and afternoon with the Humpbacks To watch the Humpbacks move around the waters offshore is a sight to see. They are a much larger whales then the Grays and do much more breaching and the tail shots every few minutes or so. It was a great show.

A few Gray whales around and a bunch of Humpbacks
The Gray whales are not as plentiful as they have been the past month or so but more then made up for recently with a good number everyday of Humpback whales showing beautiful tail shots just a few miles offshore. Gray whales are great to watch but the Humpbacks are larger and I might have to admit more spectacular. Now you get two for the price of one with a little luck.

Humpbacks all day long
Monday was a great day for whale watching because the Gray whales were scarce on this day but we had a Humpback in close to shore who was putting on a great show all day long. Tuesday we are back to watching Gray whales as the Humpback was gone but the Gray whales returned. There were some great shots for fishing parties offshore today in the salmon grounds as more Humpback whales were cruising by.

Whaling was good when the fog was not around
The whale sightings were good on Sunday in between battles with the comings and goings of the fog banks. The valley has been so consistently hot that we have been fighting fog for not only fishing trips lately but the whale watching as well. When the fog lifts or pushes back off the coastline the sightings are excellent like today but it becomes more difficult when it rolls right back in again. Like today off and on......

Gray whales - Orca's - Humpbacks
It was a special day with sightings of not only the Gray whales on Saturday but there were a few Humpbacks sighted and a pod of Orca whales to boot. Not every day does this happen and not everyone all day long gets to see them all but some who are the lucky ones catch a glimpse of all three.

The FOG pushed back today
The whale trips were great today as we finally got some relief from the fog. It is still out there but pushed back far enough off the coastline that the "critters" were easy for us to find. Multiple whales in the area as they have been all summer long. You will also most of the times get to see many species of bird life which live on the ocean waters, harbor seals, harbor porpoise and some sea lions possibly. Don't forget also about the beautiful Oregon Coast as you see it from the ocean side.

Whales hiding in the fog but we found them
The whales tried for the 2nd day in a row to hide in the fog on the early trips but we found them anyhow. Later in the day the fog moved back off the coastline and then it was a lot easier to search them out and they put on great shows for us. Egor (one of the named whales) was the biggest celebrity today.

It was a beautiful day unlike what the forecast was saying and the sun soaked coast brought the whale watchers out in groves and the whales did not make anyone unhappy. As the fog curtain raised the whale watching turned on
Whale watching was very goon on Monday and was especially good in the early afternoon when the fog curtain raised. Fog has been very consistent these past 4-5 days due to the very HOT temperatures that the valley regions of Oregon are experiencing lately. When the valley heats up we get the winds and or FOG down here. We can put up with the fog as long as it does not get windy. The combination of the two is not very pleasant. Anyhow, lots of whales in the area.

Fog and the Whales
The fog provided a perfect cover for the whales to hide if they wanted to as it made finding whales on Sunday difficult at times. We did find them on every trip but keeping them in sight at least for the first couple of trips proved difficult. The final two trips of the day the fog backed offshore and made things a whole lot easier.

It was really foggy out there today even in the afternoon but there are so many whales in the area they were easily found for our passengers today. Current Report:
The fog lifted just in time......
As the sun rises and sets every day so does the luck of the Tradewinds whale watch boats on Thursday as just before the day was to begin for our whale watch boats (10am) the very thick fog that was here most of the morning raised its curtain just for us. Then just as we were finishing up the day of whale watching and coming back in on the final trip of the day the curtain fell back. The show was over and the fog came back in out of the north. It was a good show also with lots of whales to view on this sunny day at least out to about a half mile offshore where the fog was. The moral of the story is that if you want to go whale watching don't worry about the fog when you go with Tradewinds.

There were four up of off Lincoln City in the morning which actually were somewhat of a pest around the bottom fishing boats as they were fishing and feeding right along side of the bottom fishing boats. Though the seas were a little on the choppy side Sunday we got out with the customers on several nice whale watching tours to view the summer time whales which grace our area every year. As it closes its mouth, water and sediments are expelled through the baleen plates, which trap the food on the inside near the tongue to be swallowed. They stay in our area until the end of October and are feeding every day. Come visit the area and take in one of Tradewinds one or two hour adventures.

The truth of this Thursday was the whale watching close to shore was very good with a few whales right out in front of the harbor area and great weather to view them. Another truth was that we also had Humpback whales at 30 and 50 fathoms right out in front of Depoe Bay that the fishing boats saw this morning. For the past 3-4 days we have had pods of Killer (Orca) whales in the Depoe Bay area cruising by. This is the time of the year and if you get lucky when they are cruising by it is quite a show. Today the fishing boats were blessed to a great show of 7-8 of them in one pod. Spectacular!!

Whales Moving South - better then moving North
The reports earlier today was that whales were spotted moving south as they were going by Depoe Bay which is good because if they were still migrating they would be headed north. That might mean to this reporter that they might be considering sticking around the area. I was nor privy to any report on the sightings on the whale trips this afternoon.

Now It's Gray Whale & Killer Whale Cruises
Out front of Depoe Bay Sunday morning/afternoon on a beautiful ocean were Gray whales and there were also three Killer (Orca's) Whales proceeding south at a leisurely rate. What a great day it was. Warm and sunny skes and a flat ocean made it just an incredible day for watching whales, sea lions, harbor seals, and an abundance of bird life. If you weren't here, you missed it!!

Nice Afternoon Ocean but Foggy
The ocean which was really cranky in the early morning hours turned around and got much better by noon but a persistent fog which came in overnight was still present which made whale watching difficult Saturday afternoon. The heat in the valley usually makes for foggy conditions or brings the winds up. This time overnight it did both. Sunday is suppose to be a much-much nicer day.

Whales in the Area Thursday
There were a few whales in the area Thursday about two miles North of the Depoe Bay harbor. They appeared to not be feeding and heading further North which lends to the feeling that they were not resident whales bound to stay in our area. We are awaiting the arrival of our year-to-year resident whales to begin showing up here for the summer.

Beautiful Cruise Day
It was another beautiful Oregon Coast cruise day with several trips going out today but not a whole lot of luck spotting the whales. The whales are around the area but seem to be moving from place to place finding the best feeding grounds. There is a whole lot of ocean to cover out there in finding them. As we get into the middle of June and more and more of the resident whales start to gather in the area then there are more of them to be be looking for and easier to find. The cruise however is a great time with loads of marine mammals to see, bird life and the simply beautiful coastline of Oregon.

The Whales Are Back !!
Monday afternoon the whales were back and what made it easier to find the whales that are around the area are the great ocean conditions. When the ocean is nice like it was yesterday and forecasted to be for the rest of this week finding them is a much easier task. Come on down and take in the cruise to see the whales and all of the other ocean life.

Nice Ocean Weather in the Forecast
If the whales are around we will find them this week with very nice ocean conditions in the forecast all week long according to the weather guys. Our ocean cruises are the best on the coast even without the whales with beautiful scenery, marine mammals, the many different types of marine bird life and just the unexpected things that you will get to see. Scenic Tours (renamed for a while)
Tons of folks on the two Tradewinds vessels whale watching (scenic tours) Sunday on a very nice afternoon. After five days of Northwest winds we finally had a nice day on this holiday weekend but we need to re-name the trips scenic tours at least for a while until the whales show up again. We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of any of the resident whales. With the trips into Whale Cove to see the harbor seals, sea lions on the buoys, the abundance of bird life and the beautiful Oregon coast line we still showed good times for the folks.

Tough Finding 'em in the Wind
Once again we did run some whale watch trips Saturday afternoon but it was another tough go with moderate winds the whole day long. Not many whales around right now to begin with and the few that we do have in the area before the resident whales begin to show up are tough to find especially in the choppy waters produced by the winds.

No Whales Spotted Today
Windy and choppy seas dominated the one whale watch trip we had on Friday. Not a whole lot of whales around the area right now as it is and with the wind and ocean chop that makes finding the ones that are in the area difficult at best. Some let up in the wind is forecasted later in the holiday weekend.

White Caps & Finally a Whale
The ocean displayed just a five foot swell Thursday afternoon but probably another five feet of wind chop made whale viewing a little difficult as the usual 8-foot whale spout would be most certainly reduced to about a foot and a half because of the wind. We had a nice cruise down South of the Depoe Bay area on a beautiful sunny but windy afternoon and was able to pop into Whale Cove for some neat kodak moments and a look at well over a hundred harbor seals basking on the rocks. Then suddenly on the way back to the harbor we were able to spot one of those foot and a half spouts and got about a half dozen nice looks at a single whale moving North up the line. It topped the trip off quite well.

Springtime Whale Watching
It was windy and the whales have disappeared once again. The whale center reported a cow and a calve going by this morning and a few feeders in close to shore on the South side of Depoe Bay. They may have been out there very close but the wind was blowing at a pretty good clip and even with a small swell on the ocean it was extremely difficult to spot any spouts. So, the skipper took the folks into Whale Cove where the wind does not blow nearly as hard and they had a good time watching the harbor seals. It's Springtime !! Here one day and gone the next.

Three whales in the area Tuesday afternoon on one very nice cruise with almost a full load on board. ??Where Have They Gone??
Had a very nice ocean again Sunday afternoon even though it was a might bit foggy out there but the visibility was good enough to allow us to spot the whales. The problem was there was nothing to spot! They are just out of our area now as we await the resident whales we can recognize who will be spending the summer with us. The cruises were still fun as we had many marine mammals out there today double-decked on the sea buoys sunning themselves. This time of year it could and can be off and on as far as sightings go. We will keep you informed as it will pick up here soon for the rest of the summer into fall.

Mom & Offspring
Two cruises out of Tradewinds dock today one a two hour adventure and the other a one hour adventure. As sometimes happens this time of year they were hard to find but towards then end of the first trip we were able to find a cow and a calve in close to the shoreline heading up the line. The 2nd trip was able to catch up and follow it up the line. These are the stragglers which is the very end of the northerly migration and we anxiously await the arrival of our resident whales. We have already had some that appear to be in that category but they seem to disappear and then reappear from day to day. It is still a decent time to get out and see the whales but better times are coming soon.

Saturday Whale Watching
It was windy for all of our trips Saturday and the whale watching proved to be somewhat difficult because of the wind but we did have decent sightings with whales showing up South of the Depoe Bay harbor. The scenery was beautiful with the usual marine life being observed but the wind limited good sightings as the spouts were being blown down and that made it difficult to get real good views today.

We did get out on two whale watch trips Friday but by the time we started running the trips there was a 20 knot wind on the ocean waters which made a rather nice ocean choppy and very difficult to spot whales. Whale Watching Back in the Swing
The ocean is back to nicer conditions after 4-5 days of a large storm which finally has moved out of the area. Nice weather is in the forecast through the weekend into the first part of next week. These whales are called our resident whales and it is the best whale watching we have all year long.

There was one whale out in front of Depoe Bay this Sunday but not one charter boat out of the harbor to view them on this day. After viewing Saturday afternoons white cap filled ocean scene the word was that Sunday would not be a good day. It turned out to be a sun drenched balmy nice ocean. Tradewinds Charters School In Session
Had a great group of seventy-five middle school guys and gals out with us this morning and it was Tradewinds 101. The kids had a great time watching whales, sea lions, and schools of fish under the boats in Whale Cove along with the usual harbor seals and the abundance of bird life almost everywhere. Three full vessels had a great time as Oregon youngsters from the valley enjoyed this part of their day, which accumulated afterwards with a trip to the tide pools in Newport.
Later in the day whale trips for the regular daily crews found a cow and a calve North of Depoe Bay in the shallow waters up off Lincoln Beach. Bring your own school group down as the tuition is worth the knowledge that the kids get for both older and young.

Here One Trip, Gone The Next….
Whale watching was great on our first trip out Sunday late morning with three whales that thrilled the crew out with us today and two of those whales appeared to be resident types as they were in the process of feeding on the inner reefs. We also had a cow and a calf (mom and offspring) go by today as well but they seemed to be in a big hurry heading north. That does tell us that the stragglers are going by now and usually means that we should be seeing cows and calves quite often now for the near future. On our 2nd trip of the day the three whales had disappeared and late into that trip they still had not caught up with them. It is a good time for whale watching so give us a call and come down and enjoy the show this next week with good ocean weather in the picture.

There Back For Today Anyhow!!
This is a first of the cruising day report but with the choppy waters and cold air conditions it might be a shorter day then might be normal for a Saturday but lets hope that the ocean conditions improve as the afternoon goes along. The first trip cruisers this morning were greeted with some great whale watching as even as I write we have a trio of whales just a "wee bit North" of the harbor area feeding on the inner reefs. It would be great if these guys or gals (??) stick around every day as close as they were this morning. Makes for great sightings and the folks get the whole hour or two to watch whales instead of the sometimes usual time to get out and find them first. Tail shots and lots of activity this morning.

The whales were hard to find again today on a windy afternoon even though the ocean was in pretty good shape throughout the day. We had good sightings in the earlier morning hours from the shoreline but by the time we got out there in the late morning they were gone. Some were sighted as being in a big hurry heading North. By the third trip we were watching whales once again about a mile North of Depoe Bay and a mile and a half offshore.

As it is from time to time "They Were All No Shows"
The whales were all "No Shows" today but the semi-foggy conditions and the little bit of wind chop out there did not help the boat skipper to find them. Someone said that they smelled one and "you can actually smell them" from their spouts but they were not able to locate them. As these feeding whales work there way up and down the coastline looking for the best feeding grounds there may be a few days like this. It will only get better as we get further into Spring.

Current Report: Hard to Find Gray Whales?
Maybe it was the foggy background we were trying to find the whales in Monday afternoon or maybe the whales were just taking a day off? Either way they were hard to find Monday though on the 2nd trip we did find one smaller whale feeding on the inshore reefs about a mile north of Depoe Bay. He actually did put on a decent show with some nice tail shots towards the end of the trip. It was almost like he was telling us to go home so we did!
Date: Sunday, April 19, 2009 at 16:26
Current Report: It appears right now that some of the resident whales as they are called around here have begun to arrive a month or so early then what might be normal. We already have many sightings today and over this past week on our whale watch trips of whales being in the shallow waters where they historically use for their summer feeding grounds in our area. We had good sightings today on all of our trips until the winds came up in the early afternoon. These whales are much more social and put on better shows then the migratory whales seem to. Well, all we can do is hope this is the case that the summer whale watching is already here and will last well into the fall. Come on down and take in the fun and excitement of watching whales out of Tradewinds Charters Depoe Bay. Trips depart daily beginning mid-morning.
Date: Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 20:51
Current Report: We had a bunch of whale watch trips the past few days and like we have reported in the past few additions to the whale watch report they are beginning to get much closer to shore. This should be a pretty good indication that the migration north might be starting to wind down a bit but also a sign that some of the whales which will be known as our resident whales this summer are beginning to show up. That is great news because they are closer to the shoreline, easier to find and most importantly are a bit more on the social side. They get used to the boats from a distance and as the spring /summer goes on will often stroll right up next to the boats. This is the best time to view whales now and into the fall as these whales are not in any hurry like the migratory whales are as there only desire is to feed. Come on down to Tradewinds in Depoe Bay where our boats are scheduled for daily trips out to see the whales from mid-morning throughout the afternoon.
Date: Monday, April 13, 2009 at 17:54
Current Report: Just like the fishing the weather has gotten in the way of the whale watching the past few days. When we do get back out there in a few days the whales will still be there. More and more of them have started to appear in the shallow waters around Depoe Bay which is more of an indication that they are feeding and possibly will stick around the local area. Some of you folks are unaware that our best whale watching is in the summer and fall. The migration is over but the summertime brings out our resident whales which are more sociable and easier to find and watch. Just because the migration is coming to an end in a few weeks only brings the resident whales into our area and will be here long into the fall. It is the best whale watching we have.
Date: Friday, April 10, 2009 at 16:13
Current Report: Whales ! Whales ! Whales! Tradewinds boats had them Friday morning/ afternoon with whales in the shallows feeding and then more migratory whales a few miles offshore as well. The migration is still going strong and as reported before we are beginning to see some of the whales dropping off and coming into shallow water that appear to be feeding. Tradewinds Charters has boats ready to roll when the ocean permits beginning mid-morning daily.
Date: Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at 07:25
Current Report: Monday was a great day for whale watching out of the world’s smallest navigable harbor. Tradewinds boats ventured out beginning in late morning and continued trips into the middle of the afternoon with outstanding sightings all day long. There were plenty of whales out in front of Depoe Bay Monday and most were in pods of 2-4 whales. The northerly migration is still going strong and should continue well into the month of May. We are hopeful between now and then that our local (resident) whales will begin to show up. It was a fun ride on Monday with some speed bumps on the water until the first buoy was reached and then smooth sailing out to the whales on a beautiful rolling ocean. The sea lions were in full display sun bathing on the outer buoys and wait till you see the unlimited bird life on the waters. Today the adventures continue….
Date: Friday, April 3, 2009 at 18:19
Current Report: We are heading into a great sounding weekend for cruising and the whales are out there and still moving north on their annual migration. It should be a great weekend for whale viewing with a much-improved ocean with no winds to speak of in the weekend forecast. We are already starting to see a few whales in closer to shore and obviously doing a little feeding as they move north or possibly looking for a summertime home in our area so early in this spring. One of our fishing boats a few miles offshore last week also saw three Orca whales (killer whales) and one really was a large one. Springtime is normally the time that the Orca’s begin to move by our shores moving normally in a southerly direction. We have our more then abundant population of sea lions sleeping on the buoys, which our boats normally stop by on the way out to see the whales. You also get to view the countless species of bird life that live on our ocean waters. Did you hear about that saltwater sea otter spotted in Depoe Bay a week or so back? They have been rare along the Oregon Coast in recent years but when he has been seen it has been right under the bridge next to the Tradewinds docks. The otter seemed to like Depoe Bay so maybe he will be back?
Date: Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 09:53
Current Report: The whale action was very good on Tuesday with a rather “cranky ocean” to deal with but the Tradewinds passengers got what they came for which was some great sightings of the migrating whales. The whale sightings were actually a little better then the day before when the ocean was nicer. We ran a couple of trips out to the whale grounds and then called it a day. Give us a call daily at our Highway 101 office right next to the Depoe Bay Bridge for an ocean report and when the trips will be leaving on that day.
Date: Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 09:12
Current Report: Whale watching will continue Monday morning as the ocean will settle down after a rough ocean weekend and once again the whale watching fleet to go with will be on the Pacific pond finding those migratory whales for our customers. There are lots of whales out there as the migratory northerly run of the Pacific Gray whale is still on its peak side so come down and join the fun. Sail on clean comfortable heated cabin boats with knowledgeable skippers that not only find you the whales but also give you some great historical information on their migration and history. It will be a trip you will remember. Seeing these “critters” in their natural environment is something that you will not soon forget. May I also suggest the two-hour trips? Yes, they cost a few more of your hard earned dollars but spending time with these whales and seeing multiple pods going by out in front of Depoe Bay is the real ticket with the migratory whales.
Date: Friday, March 27, 2009 at 20:13
Current Report: The whale watching the past few days saw hundreds of folks at the coast taking advantage of the great ocean conditions and the abundance of whales offshore as Tradewinds had three boats pretty much going full force from mid-morning to the middle of the afternoon. The whale watching was a little slower on Friday after a spectacular day on Thursday with whales just about everywhere out in front of Depoe Bay. Though Friday was somewhat slower as far as finding the migrating critters in the numbers we saw Thursday that is normal as sometimes there is a lull between pods of whales and other times they move further offshore. Whale watching on the migration should be great for sightings through the end of April and then we should start to see the arrival of our resident whales, which will be with us through late, fall. Call Tradewinds for either a one or two-hour adventure-watching the Gray whales on the Pacific.
Date: Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 06:27
Current Report: Whale watching sure has been great this past week on the days we have been able to get out to them depending on the ocean weather but when we have it sure has been spectacular. The whales have been around 3-5 miles offshore which is common this time of year during the northerly migration of the Pacific Gray whale. It should be a great time for sightings of the migration for the next month and a half or so and towards the end of that time the cows and calves will be coming through. To make the sightings even better we have been watching multiple pods of whales, as the main part of the migration moves by the Depoe Bay area. The Tradewinds boats are very well equipped for taking you out to see the whales with comfortable well maintained boats, handicapped accessible vessels and heated cabins for your comfort just in case it gets a little chilly out there. Trips start every day weather permitting around mid-morning and run through the afternoon. Call Tradewinds for reservations.

Current Report: WE TRIED!! We tried to get a few boats full of anxious whale watch customers out to see the whales Monday but those forecasted winds beat us to where the whales were and we were forced to turn around and bring the folks back to port. By the time we got out close to where the whales were a few miles offshore the winds had increased almost instantly up over 30 knots. That would be for you folks reading this “not so much fun”!! Some of the folks were having a great time in the wind and rain but whales is what we were after so refunds were the name of the game. We will try again when the ocean conditions get better. This weather is so typical for this time of year but also what happens is when the weather breaks and it gets nice we will be in for a good long stretch of great conditions.
Date: Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 14:47
Current Report: Talk about a great day on Saturday. We ran multiple whale watch trips out to the migratory whales and it was spectacular. Multiple pods of whales were seen on all trips on a great ocean. The inclement weather that was forecasted never materialized and we had boats watching the whales from mid-morning to late in the afternoon. Lots of folks in the Depoe Bay area for the start of Spring Break and lots were taking advantage of the nice day and the good ocean conditions to venture out and see the migratory Gray whales. If you have never seen the whales in their natural habitat making their yearly northerly trip up to the Alaskan waters it is well worth the price of admission. Several of our boats are handicap accessible and all have heated cabins for your comfort. Come on down and join us.

Current Report: Disappointment was supreme on the Tradewinds dock on this Friday afternoon, as we had to turn away many folks as the ocean got very windy and choppy in the afternoon hours. After running a “trial run” so to speak the skippers decided that it was just to rough for folks to go out and view the whales. Though we don’t like to disappoint our passengers having fun on these trips and safety is always of first concern. There will be better days and hopefully tomorrow (Saturday) will be that day.

Current Report: Tradewinds had one boat out today for whale watch trips and they were indeed successful with whales just offshore from Depoe Bay and those who were part of today’s crew had great sightings. The migration should be strong for the next month or two with cows and calves being the last to go by in May. We then should be seeing our resident whales start to show up which will be here for the remainder of the summer into fall. Good whale sightings should be with us now through the month of October. Summer resident whale watching is the best that we have, as these “critters” are far less shy then the migratory whales and are feeding on the inshore reefs much closer to shore.

Current Report: The Northerly migration is underway and we have had great sightings when we have been able to get out into the ocean. The ocean weather has been “a little cranky” for almost a week now but we do expect the next two days (Thursday & Friday) to be do-able for whale watching starting around the noon hour. The last day we did get to go was last Friday and was it ever spectacular as sightings were spotted about three miles offshore. Not only did the folks get to see a pod of whales but also they saw multiple pods and at one time had whales blowing and one breaching around the boat. Come down and help us celebrate springtime and enjoy the show. Call Tradewinds for daily sailing times.
