Happy New Year From Tradewinds
As we close the door on 2009 and welcome in 2010 we are expecting the weather to slowly begin to get better and the fishing prospects as far as days we can actually get out and fish to improve as the weeks pass by. The Lingcod fishing should be great not only on the offshore trips but the Lingcod will be heading into the shallow water reefs thru about the 1st of April to spawn so the inshore trips should be great as well. We will have updates when needed on fishing success and fishing season news between now and March 1st when daily updates will return for another great fishing season in 2010.

Lets Go Fishing
We are running fishing trips over the holidays and into the New Year. This time of year the trick is to find days when the ocean weather is good to go. The fishing has been good on the few days we have gotten out the past few months so stay in touch with the office for ocean weather information.

Daily updates will continue in the Spring…..
It has been a great year for Tradewinds but as we begin to approach the winter months the good weather and ocean days to fish and watch whales become harder to find. Our daily updates for whale watching and fishing will be back in the spring. We will continue to inform you of any happenings we think you should know such as the upcoming 2010 fishing seasons and other news of noteworthy. We are actively selling gift cards for the holiday season and you may leave your number via email or call and leave information to contact you via telephone on voice mail. Our office is open a couple hours every day (normally 11am-2pm) to check messages and get your gift cards out as soon as received. Whale watching for the winter migration (again, ocean permitting) begins mid-December and will be running thru the New Year and we will keep you informed on the migration sightings.
If you have specific questions use the Tradewinds information request form and your inquiry will be answered without delay throughout the winter months. You can still make reservations for fishing and whale watching over the Tradewinds website reservation system or by calling the office. If no answer leave us a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Thank you for your business in 2009 and have a great holiday season.

The bad news followed by the good news
The bad news as we head into a change back to standard time and November is that the weekend looks like a no-go but beginning Monday everything points to a stretch of decent weather rolling in at least for the first 3-4 days of the week. Take advantage of the good winter weather when you can.

Current Report:
No fishing trips out today
The ocean is not to bad this morning but winter makes Depoe Bay a bit less populated then in the summer months. We will keep an eye open on the weekend.

Current Report:
It's just wet....
The ocean is not all that bad today but it is windy, foggy and wet. Might not be much fun out there. Things are beginning to look a little better from Sunday into the first of next week. We will keep you informed.

Current Report:
The Good, the Bad and the fishing
No fishing today for several reasons ranking from the middle of the week to the time of the year to the large swell out there. Th good is that the day shows no rain and no wind with swell lower then the past two days. The bad news is the wind and rain returns tomorrow with the swell going back up. Keep in touch....
Date: Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 06:47:10
Current Report:
Not today....
No fishing on Tuesday due to heavy ocean sea conditions with some heavy rain on top of that. We will let you know when things improve.
Date: Monday, October 26, 2009 at 10:18:42
Current Report:
The ocean is not terrible but how much do you like getting wet?
The ocean is only showing a 6 foot swell this morning but "NO", we do not have any boats out there fishing. The answer is in the "dew point" which was surpassed easily with evidence in the pouring down rain we have today. The forecast does not get much better thru this week with rain and growing swells in that forecast at least thru Friday. Maybe a show of good weather for the weekend might be possible and we will keep you informed if and when things get better.

Current Report:
No boats out on Sunday
Pretty nice ocean early on Sunday and would have been a decent day to sail but as we get closer to winter not as many folks in the area. Saturday seems to be the best day as far as numbers wanting to go. Sounds like another stretch of bad weather to hit the coast beginning this afternoon thru at least the middle of the week ahead so we will keep you informed on the happenings.

Current Report:
Weather a little better today and even better Sunday
A goof fishing trip Saturday but not real sure of the exact catch but I did see a good line of customers at the filet station all with baskets I assume were full of fish. The weather for Sunday is forecasted to be pretty nice and then some more "cranky weather" coming in the first of next week. It's getting closer to winter folks.

BIG ALBACORE TUNA news coming this spring
Yes, you will have to wait but we will be having some big news about fishing ALBACORE TUNA only at Tradewinds Charters this upcoming Tuna season. It will be something you won't want to miss exclusively at Tradewinds.
Date: Friday, October 23, 2009 at 10:04:38
Current Report:
Another NO Fishing Friday
No fishing again on Friday as there was just too much wind, too much moderate swell and too much rain to make anything out there a whole lot of fun. Things do look somewhat better for Saturday.
Date: Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 06:59:21
Current Report:
Not today......
A big swell out in front of Depoe Bay on this Thursday so we will hope for better weather soon. Keep in touch because you will hear that better weather is here on this channel.

Current Report:
Wednesday Window Fishing......
We had one fishing boat out this morning as we thought when we checked out the ocean early this morning that it appeared to be a window to get out there and catch some fish before the forecasted bad weather arrived. That is exactly what happened as we got out there on a reasonable ocean and as they most always do the fish bit like fleas. That was a good thing as the forecasted weather arrived about a hour into the trip but by that time we were just about done. The result was limits of fish around with even a few nice Lingcod in the mix. As I write this three hours after the boat left to go fishing the window is now abruptly closed.

Current Report:
It's Monday, nice ocean. overcast, & drizzly
No boats out today. The town is empty as it is sometimes this time of year during the work week. Sounds like rain and some growing seas are in the forecast for the next several days. We will keep you informed on the upcoming weekend weather.
Date: Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 10:47:06
Current Report:
Depoe Bay not very crowded today
No boats out today. We have some decent weather happening for Monday and then possibly some more weather hitting the area for Tuesday thru the end of the week. We will let you know how it all pans out.

Current Report:
We did get out this morning
After close to a week tied to the boards in the harbor we did get out this morning and the fish were hungry probably not having anything to eat after five days without us to feed them It was a good thing also because after a nice start to the ocean weather this morning it without warning got very windy and the ocean turned upside down. By that time we were all on our way home with limits with not a huge number of Lingcod but a good assortment of them none-the-less. Tomorrow is suppose to be a better day.
Date: Friday, October 16, 2009 at 13:49:12
Current Report:
No fishing again today
Though the weather was somewhat better then what it was forecasted to be the boats stayed in the harbor again this morning. We will see what happens tomorrow and hopefully the forecast tomorrow comes up even better then what it is saying. The best day seems this weekend to be Sunday.

Current Report:
Things look better for the weekend
We were shut out again today weather wise from ocean activities and it does not look good for tomorrow (Friday) but the weekend is slowly looking a little better every day. It does not look perfect like last weekend but it from 48 hours out looks like a do-able thing. We will keep you informed.

Current Report:
Come view the ocean but stay off of it
Day #2 of the first sometimes called winter storm of the season. We have winds over 35 knots at the present time and combined seas over 20 foot. It will be spectacular to watch but no one would want to go out on it. It will get better and we will let you know right here when that happens.
Date: Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 08:57:57
Current Report:
No fishing today
No boats out today due to inclement weather. We have gale force wind advisories out for the next few days so we are hopeful for things to return to fishable conditions by the weekend.

Current Report:
Monday found good fishing for the fleet
The Tradewinds fleet found good fishing and crabbing as we watched the ocean grow during the trip as we prepare for a few days of winter type weather. Hopefully we will clear for the weekend. Good catches of rockfish and some really nice Lingcod in the catch today. The crabbing has really picked up to summer time standards the past few days as the pots were full and the folks were happy.
Date: Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 16:04:18
Current Report:
Good fishing not matter where you were
It was a beautiful day on the ocean which was a nice gesture from the weather gods in preview of the bad weather expected this next week for a few days. The inshore boats did great on the Lingcod as well as the bottom fish and the crabbing after a few days of so-so crabbing was GREAT today. Lots of crab for the folks on the crabbing boats.
The offshore "Big Lingcod" boats had spectacular days with limits of Lingcod in the 15-22 pound range and some really nice Yellowtail rockfish caught in the deep water as well. It was a weird morning with great weather on the way out and then just before we got to the deep water spots the wind came up and it was really nasty with wind chop and a very fast moving current. Fishing on the first drift was very difficult but on the way back to set up for the 2nd drift the weather gods turned off the wind and we had perfect conditions for the remainder of the day. Both boats also limited on the rockfish as we stopped on the way back in a Tradewinds exclusive.

Current Report:
Big Lingcod & Don't Forget Those Humboldt Squid
Two boats offshore on the "Big Lingcod Trips" this morning and things started off on fire and then........
The Humboldt Squid took over. We had the majority of the Lingcod in the boat but then a obvious huge mass of squid invaded the area and it made it near impossible to get to the bottom where the lingcod are. If you like SQUID you would have loved these trips. As much as you would ever wish for. Actually we packed our bags so to speak and came back inshore and bottom fished for rockfish and caught the rest of the Lingcod even though they were a smaller variety. A great day.

Current Report:
Yellowtail rockfish and some nice Lingcod
Great fishing today on the Tradewinds boats with quite a few Yellowtail rockfish a deeper water specie of rockfish and some nice Lingcod as well, one in the 25 pound range. The crabbing also remains strong with good catches for the folks on board. The bite this morning up North was in the deeper water areas off of Lincoln City.
Date: Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 15:05:46
Current Report:
Good fishing today
The word was a good catching day on the fishing boat out today but no particulars were available. We have a real nice three day period coming up weather wise thru Sunday and we have inshore and offshore bottom fishing trips on the books. It sounds like some bad weather coming in early next week so this might be a good weekend to get in that fishing trip for the Big Lingcod or our regular 5-hr trips on the inshore reefs.
Date: Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at 13:14:14
Current Report:
Hard work fishing day
Fishing was a little pokey today but our large boat crew aboard worked hard at it and ended up with very close to a boat limit on the rockfish and some nice Lingcod on board as well. There was one really nice 20+ pound Lingcod to one lucky customer. The crabbing was also good this morning with 4-5 crab average per person.
A little note from yesterday was that the Tuna fishing was cancelled part way out yesterday with the word was that the fish were over 50 miles offshore so the crew went "Big Lingcod" fishing instead. The crew came home with some great 25-30 pound Lingcod instead. It appears that the Tuna have moved way offshore and that the 2009 season is over. Stay tuned for next July.

Current Report:
Beautiful day for fishing & BITING
The ocean was beautiful and the fish were biting up off LIncoln City reefs this morning. There was fantastic variety in the catch this morning with more then half the Lingcod needed and some big Quillback, Sea trout, Tiger and Vermillion rockfish in the catch. We caught some beautiful Cabezon as well but had to throw them back as our quota for them this year is up. Just a great trip.
We also have probably our last Tuna boat for the year offshore today and will bring you some information on that trip in case there still might be some folks out there wanting to give it a try.
Date: Monday, October 5, 2009 at 16:02:24
Current Report:
It was a "Big Lingcod" Day
Make no mistake it was quite the "Big Lingcod Day" out of Tradewinds with many of the fish caught today over the 30-pound mark. The Tradewinds boats go out a little further then most to where the bigger fish are and then take our passengers after the rockfish after the Lingcod are caught. It is a full day of fishing. Give us a call and "witness" the difference.

Current Report:
Lingcod on the bite....
Good Lingcod fishing today on the 5-hr trips on both our fishing boats this morning and a great variety of limits of rockfish also in the fish buckets. A slightly wiggly ocean was with us Sunday morning but it did not keep the fish from biting up a storm.
Don't forget about those offshore deep water Lingcod trips and remember that our skippers will bring you back in after the lingcod fishing and use the time left to catch you some of those rockfish as well. A little extra bonus only from Tradewinds.

Current Report:
Limit Catches + Lingcod
The ocean was a little on the "bumpy side" this morning at departure but it mellowed out during the trip and turned really nice for the better part of the fishing trip. The fish liked the ocean also with limit catches on the rockfish with some good variety in the fish buckets. The Lingcod bite did not produce a limit for the 12+ people on the boat today but there were quite a number caught and they were of really nice size also. All in all a great day.

Current Report:
Beautiful ocean but no fishermen
The ocean was just beautiful today but for some reason no fishermen to go. Hopefully the weather will hold for us into the weekend. Remember, October 1st (today) the offshore Lingcod reefs opened up and we can go after those critters thru next March. Those are nice big fish and is a great fall trip for you deep water buffs.

Current Report:
Another day on the beach
With 8-12 foot swells we all spend another day on the beach as we wait for the conditions to clear up. Thursday's forecast looks like a decent day for planning purposes. Stay tuned as we will keep you up to date as hopefully things will improve soon.

Ocean weather flexing its muscles
For the 2nd day in a row as sometimes the fall season gives us we have ocean conditions that generally do not provide our guests much fun on the ocean waters. We will let you know here when things begin to straighten out.

Current Report:
The weather finally won out
After watching weather reports for the past three days giving us reason to believe that the ocean was not going to cooperate only getting up in the morning and being able to fish in the morning gave us another slight hope fro Sunday as well. It was not in the cards this morning. Winds and heavy swell forced all of our boats to stay tied to the dock. It will be day to day here as we wait for things to settle down a bit.
Date: Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 20:41:36
Current Report:
The fish bit just in time
The weather was threatening with wind and rough seas but all the boats from Tradewinds got out and fished quickly and the fish cooperated and bit quickly. That was another way of telling you that fishing was good this morning. I do not have any information about the Lingcod bite on the bottom trips but one of our salmon boats out fishing this morning was fishing shallow water and caught several Lingcod's fishing for salmon. A little bonus there!! They caught five salmon all were throwbacks and had quite a few others on that got off. Salmon season closes for the year on Wednesday of this next week. No information on the crabbing today which closes on October 15th.
Date: Friday, September 25, 2009 at 11:26:24
Current Report:
Five boats out today with good fishing reports from all
The winds stayed down somewhat as we have some reports of a growing swell as well but right now all is well on the ocean including biting fish. A good morning was had by all the boats but not a whole lot of information on Lingcod's or the crab bite. The crab fishing has been great all season so do not expect any difference there but the Lingcod fishing has been off and on for the past few weeks with some great days and then an off day.
Date: Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 14:54:32
Current Report:
No reports on the day
There are no fishing reports on the day but keep in mind that next Thursday the offshore deep water Lingcod fishing re-opens and we expect some nice big fish to be hitting the filet tables weather and ocean conditions permitting. Most of these fish are fifteen pounds and better and then you come back in and fish for some rockfish if time permits. It is a great trip.
Date: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at 16:39:13
Current Report:
Bottom fishing & Tuna fishing
Another great day on the bottom fishing and crabbing fronts with three boats out all coming back with great scores but the Lingcod bite today was a bit slower then it has been over the past week.
Had one Tuna boat out today and they scored a little better the 2 fish per rod but the fish they caught were "Big Ones". There was not a fish in the boat before noon until they finally started to bite in the afternoon. All in all as the Tuna season winds down a good day on what was described as the best Tuna ocean (sea conditions) of the season.
Date: Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 14:33:55
Current Report:
Good bottom fishing and crabbing
The bottom fishing and crabbing was really good again today as the northerly reefs about five miles North of Depoe Bay provided the good fishing today. The crabbing which has been great all year long especially in the shallow areas we can get to when the ocean is nice produced some great looking crab today as well. This is the first year we have been allowed to crab past the middle of August and as the year gets into the fall months the crabs are really hardening up which means lots of meat in the shells. It is a good time to crab as we still have until the 15th of October to do so.
Just about no one is salmon fishing as the salmon seemed to have made there way to their final destinations and are not around Depoe Bay at the present time. We are seeing and catching a few however on bottom fishing trips but the straight salmon trips are going quite slow.
Date: Monday, September 21, 2009 at 14:23:40
Current Report:
Things went quick today
Two boats out bottom fishing today and both were back in with quick limits and a decent catch on the Lingcod side as well. The crabbing was also very good as after a windy day yesterday the ocean was just beautiful today all day long.
Date: Sunday, September 20, 2009 at 17:52:56
Current Report:
The fish are biting..except for the salmon
The bottom fishing right now which is the choice of smart fishermen are biting as well as they have been all summer. We had great scores over the weekend with some very nice Lingcod to go with the catch. Some of the Lingcod were "big ones" up in the 30+ inch range. The salmon fishing which ends at the end of this month is quite slow. The salmon are actually biting better on bottom fishing trips as quite a few have been caught on the inside reefs. The crabbing has been just fantastic with some nice hard shell ones out there which makes the bottom fishing trips that much more special.
Remember the deep water offshore Lingcod fishing opens up October 1st. These are great trips to catch some very nice sized Lingcod and then on the way back in you get to catch a few rockfish as well.

Back to bottom fishing...Salmon fishing prospects are good
After a few bad days of ocean weather we were back on the pond today with some really good bottom fishing with a nice array of rockfish and a few Lingcod to boot. The crabbing was also very good as well.
After a few days of south wind one sport boat limited on salmon today in just a few hours. There was also some talk about some good scores down off of Florence as well. That makes for good reason to book a salmon trip and we do have one going out in the morning. The weather thru Friday sounds really good so give us a call.

Current Report:
Another day off the water
For the 2nd day in a row the ocean was too rough for any and all ocean activities. We expect everything to be back and normal and good-to-go tomorrow with good ocean forecasts into next weekend.

Current Report:
Gale warning flags flying straight out ... No Go Today
With the winds gusting well over 30 knots and periods of driving rain the ocean as one would be well aware was a mess this morning. Being the final weekend of summer for all intensive purposes makes it a little difficult on a busy holiday weekend but we all needed a day off anyhow. Remember, we still have a few weeks left of the Tuna season and the salmon fishing will be going on till the end of the month. The bottom fishing and crabbing remains red hot and the Lingcod fishing is really beginning to heat up.
Date: Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 12:45:28
Current Report:
The ocean was a lonely place today
The only boats out on the ocean out of Depoe Bay today were the Tradewinds charter fleet as a "cranky forecast" discouraged most folks today but as sometimes happens the ocean did the old "lay down" shortly after departure. The winds and seas along with a rainy forecast never really developed as was forecasted and the ocean conditions actually mellowed at least for the fleet to limit five boats out bottom fishing this morning. The crabbing side of the adventures were cancelled as there was quite a lump on the crab zones so for safety purposes the boats just bottom fished. There were even some nice looking Lingcod hitting the decks.
The Tuna trip for today was cancelled as the boat tried to go offshore and the captain and the passengers made the decision about five miles offshore that this might not be a great deal of FUN so the returned home.
No salmon boats out this morning.

Lingcod -O-Rama
Usually the summertime brings the Lingcod fishing to a slower level and then picks up once again in the fall. It must be fall at least the Lingcod must think so. Not only have we had limits today and many caught over the past three days at Tradewinds but we are getting some "mighty big ones" as well on the more shallow reefs. We have to fish them inside 240 feet of water and we are finding some "big boys" in about 150 feet of water North of Depoe Bay. The rockfish bite was also lights out with fair to decent crabbing as well.
Salmon remains spotty with some very good action but not a great deal of take home fish.
Date: Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 16:18:41
Current Report:
Crabs on the bite... bottom fish also...Salmon , not so much
Great crabbing and a good bite as well on the bottom fish with another decent day on the Lingcod bite as well. The salmon were out there but it was a very sporadic bite with a number caught to take home, a few more of the usual throwbacks but certainly not a heavy bite.
Date: Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 17:30:17
Current Report:
Lingcod on the bit Wednesday morning
The bottom fishing was really good this morning and the Lingcod which normally are a little slow to the bite in the late summer months took off big time this morning with quite a few limits even. The crabbing was spectacular as well.
The salmon took the day off as there was not a great deal of action this morning. It has been the past few weeks day to day with some not so good days and then all of a sudden we have a great day. I wish we could predict that good day for you.

Lots of throwbacks "AGAIN"
The salmon keep biting and we keep throwing them back in. Not to kick a dead horse time and time again but there are still plenty of salmon in the neighborhood but it sure would be nice if a few more of them were keeper fish. Enough said.
Bottom fishing had to be good today as well as the crabbing because it has been good just about every day this summer. Actually I don't know that to be a fact because I failed to get the bottom fish and crabbing scores for the day. If I had to bet however I would bet my last dollar on good fishing and good crabbing.
Tuna trips going out towards the end of the week and the weekend so time is beginning to grow short on the Tuna activity for the year but there is still some time left for some good fishing success.
Date: Monday, August 31, 2009 at 17:28:59
Current Report:
Windy day and tough fishing
The salmon were still biting Monday morning but there were far to many fish with the fin still attached. The bottom fishing turned out OK but it was a tough go with the hard working fishermen doing well by the end of the trip. Crabbing was good again as it has been pretty much every day. The Tuna trip on Sunday from all reports ended up with a good catch for all on board.

Salmon season ends tonight and re-opens tomorrow
The summer long salmon season with the 3-fish bag limit closes at midnight tonight, August 31st and re-opens at 12:01 am, Tuesday September 1st. The only difference really is the length and quota of the 2nd season and lowering to a 2-fish bag limit. The 2nd season has a quota of 7,000 fin clipped Coho and will end on the last day of September unless the quota is achieved.

Here's some news...Limit on a salmon trip
Yes, you heard it right. After a few weeks of not to good fishing mixed in with a few days of good action but not many keepers Sunday turned those tables upside down. The keepers showed up on all boats and one even limited. It was a good Sunday of fishing. Still more throwbacks then the folks would like to see but some decent scores of take home fish on this day on all boats.
The bottom fishing was not hot and heavy this morning but by the end of the day pretty much limits were the rule as everyone had to work a little harder for their limits on Sunday. No word on the crabbing.
One boat out on the Tuna grounds and we will get a report to you but probably not until tonight or early tomorrow.
Date: Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 13:51:40
Current Report:
The bites were hot Saturday for bottom fish and "Oh Yes" even salmon
The salmon were in our area and really on the bite as there were some of our bigger boats who had to throw back many fish this morning with an exposed adipose fin. Unfortunately there were not a great deal of keeper fish. For whatever reason there are tons more throwback fish this season then keeper fish with the healed adipose fin. Who is responsible for this rather large difference between keepers and throwbacks or the reason for it is unknown to this writer. It is rather frustrating.
Bottom fishing was lights out this morning with great catches of rockfish, a few Lingcod in the mix and even a few keeper salmon and throwback salmon that were caught. The crabbing for one of the rare times this summer was somewhat slow.

Some better salmon news...sorta
The salmon were back in the area this morning and on the bite. There were well over twenty some odd throwbacks and according to the boat captain lots of action most of the morning. The not-so-good news was that there were not very many keepers in the mix. That is encouraging news none the less.
The bottom fishing was excellent again this morning and the crabbing which was a little off the past few days due to some tide issues came back very strong today with a good number for each crabber on board.
The latest Tuna trip this past Thursday produced over 3 per rod which was a good score this year with the fish in the 18-25 pound range.

What a nice ocean it was
After a needed day off for the fleet on Wednesday the ocean turned around quickly like it does in the summer months and provided us with a nearly flat ocean to fish on. We had a fleet of bottom fishing boats out Thursday morning, three Tuna boats offshore but no salmon boats out giving it a try. The early report on the Tuna grounds was that fish were biting and there were fish on the decks but how many and how it was doing late was not known with this update. The bottom fishing was lights out and the crabbing was also very good today. I did hear that some of the little sport boats caught some salmon this morning but it was not red hot by any fishermen's measurement.

It was a "NO GO" day
The ocean we woke up to this morning was not a lot different then the ocean we saw just before nightfall last night. ROUGH!! Everyone in the harbor except for the U.S. Coast Guard took the day off today. Things look "much-much" improved for tomorrow.

Tuesday and replay of Monday
Monday if you read backwards showed really good bottom fishing and crabbing and not so very good salmon fishing. Tuesday proved to be a replay of Monday. One of our boats had over 130 crabs today to go with some very good bottom fishing with limits for all on out boats. The place to be is up north off of Lincoln City. It takes a few more gallons of diesel to get there but the Tradewinds boats bite the bullet for its passengers. That is also where the good crabbing is as well. Not making any reference to anyone else but Tradewinds has the reputation for going where we have to go to get the best action for the folks. There is good bottom fishing in places really close to Depoe Bay but the real consistent action and better quality fish are a little hike to the north.
Thursday sounds like the best ocean day of the next several and we have Tuna boats going out on Thursday. Give a call if you want to venture offshore.
(Best bounce for your buck tip) We are hopeful for some better salmon action but the best bounce for your buck appears to be the bottom fishing along with some great crabbing.

Latest salmon catch information in
To say that the salmon quota will last thru the end of the month is a understatement. We still have 38% on the quota left as it sits at 62% caught. Last week we had over a 70% throwback margin. On Tuesday, September 1st we will trade the 38% of the quota left for the September 7,000 fish quota and a 2-fish bag limit.

A good time to fish in Depoe Bay
The summer even though it is not officially over until next month the summer crowds are beginning to slim down here on the Oregon Coast. That means it is a great time to come down and beat the crowds and take a fishing trip out of Tradewinds Depoe Bay. We will be fishing salmon well into September and the bottom fishing is very good as well as the crabbing. Tuna are still popping up inside 30 miles so lots of fishing trips available for the next month or so.
Todays fishing saw the crabbing and bottom fishing very good and the salmon fishing was on the slow side. The salmon fishing is in that stage where it is day to day good to not so good but worth the try.
Three boat scheduled to tuna fish on Thursday so check that out as well.

Salmon action improving a little more
Not great scores on take home salmon today as high boat was six fish but one boat had eighteen throwback and the others were approaching that kind of action. I know it does not help the "freezer catch" or the barbecue but at least we have some good scores of action out there and anytime you hook one up the chance is there for a take home.
Bottom fishing was very good again as was the crabbing catch. Not a whole lot of information today as your reporter made himself scarce today around the radios for the latest of reliable Tradewinds information. We also have some Tuna boats out there and I will try to get you some information later today if not by tomorrow.

Does the ocean really grow?
The ocean was a bit on the cranky side Saturday morning no mater where you were. It was fishable and didn't stop to many folks but cranky just the same. The forecast shows the swell might be growing for Tuesday and Wednesday but we shall see. Back to fishing The bottom fishing was pretty darn good with mostly limits on the rockfish but the Lingcod which were biting for a few days were off the bit this morning. The crabbing was good but not as good as past days mostly because we had to put the crab pots in deeper water then usual because of the swell we had to deal with this morning. Salmon fishing was like it has been the past few days; improved action quite a few throwbacks and not a great deal of take home fish. The Tuna boats are out there and we will have a report for you later in the day.

Salmon Improved on Friday
Though the take-home salmon was not significant the amount of action was significant as far as improvement over the past few days or so. There was pretty much action most of the morning for the 3-4 boats out salmon fishing with the usual many throwbacks and quite a few hits and misses. So maybe the better weather and water temperature will keep the salmon bite improving (we hope).
Bottom fishing and crabbing again was fantastic with rockfish limits some nice Lingcod and again over 100 crab for the one boat and unsure about the other though I heard it was also significant.
Tuna fishing I heard and it was a scratchy communication was a little slow today after a great day on Thursday. The word was that there were jumpers all around the boat in the area our guys were in but they just could not get many of them to bite.

Bottom fishing today...Unbelieveable !!!
Out bottom fishing boats Thursday morning had great days with limits on the rockfish and then also some great Lingcod fishing as well. You just have to go to the places where you catch the Lingcod if you want to have that opportunity. Tradewinds boats make that effort like no others even if we have to go the extra mile of travel to get it done. It was a great morning. The crabbing??? Interesting you should ask. One of our boats this morning had over 140 crabs which was good for over 10 crabs per person.
The final Tuna report is not in but the early reports were that we were getting some decent scores off to the SW around 40 miles off of Depoe Bay. More trips going out Friday and over the weekend.
Salmon fishing remains on the slow side even though with the last few days of Southerly winds we are hopeful for some pick-up in the activity. There was some rumors about some fish down South which hopefully will be moving our way.

It depends where you were
Bottom fishing was interesting this morning as some of the boats did extremely well and other boats not so well. It really depended where you were. Some places had great bites and other places they didn't bite at all. Every day is different. Crabbing was very good however.
Salmon action remains somewhat on the slow side still as a few days ago we had to warm of water and then four days of NW winds blowing and the water is now to cold. Sometimes it just never is right.

Very FEW summer days...... This was one of the FEW
The summertime is when we have nice ocean days and good fishing every day for most of the species we are fishing for. Well, today was one of those FEW days when nothing was biting. We did not crab today on any of the boats because of the rough weather predicted so we just salmon fished and bottom fished. None of the above was very good today. Thank goodness it happens very rarely to the Tradewinds fleet. The skippers on all of our boats worked extremely hard today to find biting fish but not much worked. Tomorrow will be different as it always is.

Current Report:
Salmon action better then bottom fishing? Well sorta...
The bottom fishing was really at a standstill Monday morning until the final hour when all heck broke loose and the boats ended up with reasonably good trips. The crabbing was also very good today.
The salmon action was good throughout the morning with lots of fish being caught today. Some other important information about the trip to share with you was probably the colder water has schooled up the fish that are out front of Depoe Bay but there were still far to many throwbacks. One boat in our fleet did well on the keepers where two others found lots of action but many throwbacks in the mix.
As promised yesterdays Tuna action for Sunday went quite well with one of our boats netting well over 30-fish on the trip.
Some windy days in the forecast today and tomorrow before it begins to come down for Thursday thru the weekend so they say.

Salmon take=homes slow but plenty of action
The salmon action this morning was considerable but the number caught that were legal to take home was not so good again. The percentage with the throw-backs and the take-home-fish has to be up around 75% now in favor of the throw-backs. The water is finally cooling down so hopefully this a a new school of fish somewhere with some more take-home fish will be heading our way.
Bottom fishing started out slow and then finished strong at the finish line. No information on the crabbing today and we do have several boats out on the Tuna grounds and we will try to get you a report by days end.

Salmon & the positive spin
Lets get this off my chest. Salmon fishing was not very good today. So lets try to positive spin it somehow by saying that the water because of no winds over the past several weeks has our inshore water temperature up around 57 degrees. Starting Sunday all thru next week the Northerly winds will be blowing so that will in turn cool the water and maybe school the fish we have in our area up some. So there you have it.
The Tuna fishing Friday and especially today was decent scores offshore with some afternoon bites providing the frosting on the cake today. The bottom fishing was fast and furious and the crabbing today was SPECTACULAR. One large boat brought in over 100 for his crew.
One word about Halibut....It is closed for the season. See ya next May.

Spotty salmon fishing
Though the salmon action was not all that bad the catching of the ones that we could keep was slow on Friday morning. Most of the boats had 15 fish upward in the nets but a large majority of those had to be thrown back on this day. To try and put a positive spin on it there seems to be fish in the area but the final outcome is to put some fish in the folks coolers on the way home. Hopefully that will improve in the days to come.
Three Tuna boats out today and we did have one bottom fishing boat also fishing today but will try to get you reports on both of those later in the day.

Decent scores on the Tuna front today
The Tuna are in around 25 miles and a little harder to catch but we had a decent trip with around 2-3 fish per person today. Later in the year they stop hitting the baits that they hit in the early part of the summer so you try different things. Lots of Tuna fisher-people going out this weekend.

After a good start the salmon bite slowed quickly Thursday
After a good first hour and a half the salmon bite fizzled Thursday morning to almost nothing but the bottom fish bite reigned supreme once again. We were bound to have a tough day sooner or later and today was the day with the salmon action off the bite. We hope this will not be the case for the days to come but today it was. It just happens folks......
The bottom fish bite and the crabbing as always this summer was excellent with limit catches on the rockfish, some nice lingcod and bunches of crab.
One Tuna boat out today and hopefully a report later will be forthcoming.

Current Report:
Salmon action pretty darn good Wednesday
Though NO boat limits were taken today it was still pretty good fishing with lots of action through the morning on all of the boats. Somewhere around a fish and a half a rod to two fish a rod was a fairly accurate boat count this morning. Not quite as many throwbacks today as well.
The bottom fishing even on this morning's "cranky ocean" was still lights out with rockfish limits and some nice lingcod to boot. No report on the crabbing today.
Date: Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at 15:32:18
Current Report:
Bottom fishing was great while the Salmon slowed a bit
The bottom fishing produced limits and there were also some nice lingcod tody in the mix and some usual good crabbing to send home with the folks.
The Salmon fishing slowed somewhat today with the boats having a harder time finding the good bite areas. This summer the Salmon have been located mostly offshore some 5-7 miles but today later in the trips we found the better bite was inside only about two miles from the beaches. The water is very warm with upwards of 57-59 degree water which is a little on the warmer side then we like to see. There still out there though.
The Tuna report is improving with some fish starting to get closer into the beaches out about 20-25 miles instead of the 30+ we have been seeing most of the summer. Hopefully we are in store for some August red-hot fishing really soon.

Ocean salmon quota latest statistics
The salmon quota thru August 10th is slightly below 58% caught. That gives us a bunch more fish to catch (and/or release) between now and the end of the month. The amazing part of this is that the Depoe Bay statistics indicate that we are throwing back 56% of the fish we catch. Folks, I am out thee every day pretty much and the throw back percentage is more the 56 percent. I wonder how they come up with these numbers?

Throwbacks the word of the day
Salmon fishing continued to be very good as far as the catching goes but we were able to produce just slightly over a fish per rod today on an average with all the boats taken in with about a 70% throw back mix today. For those of you not aware all of the Coho salmon caught must have a healed adipose fin and if not then they must be released. Today was the day of the release.
The bottom fishing and crab was another day like a broken record with great fishing and limit catches on the rockfish but only a handful of Lingcod hitting the file tables. Crabbing as it has been all summer was very good.
We do have a boat out on the Tuna grounds today but as of this writing no report to be had yet. More on this later on or in the morning.

Salmon fishing & bottom fishing really good Sunday morning
The salmon fishing on all boats was just a little on the crazy side Sunday morning but for some boats the throwbacks really presented a problem for take home fish. Everyone gets to reel in many fish but sometimes finding the ones without the adipose fin proves to be difficult. Some boats limited from the Tradewinds fleet limited early where others are having great action but the fin thing....
The bottom fishing was fast and furious this morning with quick limits with a nice variety in the mix so goes the report. Not many Lingcod but some nice Cabezon and other species in the mix.
Our Tuna trips this morning was turned back about ten miles offshore as we woke to a windy rainy and rather steep six foot swell which made travel offshore not pleasant this morning.

Fishing remains very good
The salmon fishing is not as hot as it was but remains very good with excellent scores around the 2-fish per rod average. The bottom fishing is also very good with limits but no information on the Lingcod bite. Crabbing remains strong as it has been all summer. The Tuna fishing on Saturday was spotty with a little over a fish per rod average. This weekend halibut bite was excellent with limit score each day so far. Sorry for the quick report but we are so busy and we all need a little sleep.

Bottom Fishing "Red Hot ..... Salmon also Hot
The salmon remains at a very high rate where most folks with their fishing poles reeled in around two legal to keep fish and reeled in quite a few not so legal to keep fish as well. It was another good day on a beautiful ocean trying to reel your fish in fast enough to keep it away from the charging sea lion herds which also follow the salmon wherever they go. The salmon trips have turned into a "wildlife fest" of sorts with lots of "critters" to watch in-between salmon bites (blue sharks, sea lions, harbor seals, harbor porpoise and many different kinds of birds and I forgot about the Humpback whales). Just a fun trip only at Tradewinds Charters.
The bottom fishing was very-very good this morning with quite the hungry rockfish and some nice Lingcod and Cabezon as well. The crabbing on the way home also was true to this very good summer of crabbing with around 4-5 crabs per person.
No, we didn't forget about the Halibut bite which opened the summer season this morning which runs every other weekend Friday thru Sunday. Two boats out for the "flat guys" this morning and two boats back with limits of fish by early afternoon. The fish were in the 35-45 inch range. Tradewinds runs the extra miles to get you out to the "sure thing spots" and then you upgrade your fish as you see fit.
Tuna is on tap for tomorrow and Sunday so watch for the Tuna reports.

The salmon after a hide-&-seek day on Tuesday were back on the bite again both in shallow and deeper water right out in front of Depoe Bay and South of the harbor. All in all it is another great day for salmon fishing in and around Depoe Bay.

Latest Salmon catch statistics thru August 2nd
So far thru August 2nd we have caught slightly over 40% of the Coho salmon quota after an exceptional week of fishing on the Central Oregon Coast. Of the 13,000 fish caught last week around 8,000 of them were caught in the Depoe Bay / Newport area. Even with the great fishing we had last week there appears to be plenty of fish remaining to get us thru the rest of the month of August. Then remember the special September fishery coming up as well. Salmon fishing right into the start of fall only at Tradewinds Charters

Current Report:
Well it was bound to happen.....
The salmon fishing Tuesday slowed somewhat but there was still fairly consistent action all morning but not quite what we were having the past 5-6 days. The scores today were mixed with some boats getting around 2-fish per rod and others down around 1-fish per rod. This is typical for summer salmon fishing as one large group of fish moves thru the area to be replaced by another coming up from the South. Hopefully we do not have to wait very long.
Bottom fishing today was also mixed as the usually consistent inshore shallow water bottom fishing showed a inconsistent bite where the deeper water fish were on the bite somewhat. There were some nice scores on most of the boats with the usual good number of crabs to go along with the catch.
No tuna trips but the inshore water is showing 55 degrees just a few miles offshore so our next trips could be the "Big Bonanza" possibly. I believe we have trips planed for later in the week into the weekend and of course this weekend is the opening of the offshore summer Halibut season . Every other weekend for halibut Friday thru Sunday.

Yesterday Salmon fishing was Hot - Today it was Red Hot
What a morning with the salmon fishing for the first three hours just absolutely non-stop. It was amazing. Several boats limited and the others were very near limits. Still quite a few throw-backs but a great morning just the same on a flat beautiful somewhat hazy ocean. Lots of quota left so come down and enjoy great fishing and cool temperatures.
The Tuna fishing yesterday was "good scratch fishing". No real hand-over-fist type of catching but very steady most of the day. The fish were about a 25-pound average for the day. We will have todays report later in the day when it comes in.
The bottom fishing today was a little slower then normal but those who worked hard at it did very well. Because the rockfish were biting somewhat slower the Lingcod and Cabezon scores were up for the day which is a normal happening. As always great crab scores.

The amount of action was not quite as good but the keeper ratio was better today which helped save us. The fish are getting so big and there are some now in the 12+ pound range. Think what they are going to be later this next month into September. Wow!!!
Bottom fishing was good once again with some more of the same great scores on the crabbing front. There were a few very nice Lingcod also caught today and the Albacore Tuna action continues tomorrow thru the weekend with trips each and every day.

Salmon Still On The Bite....Bottom Fish & Crab Too
The salmon are on the bite but I must admit it gets a little bit on the frustrating side sometime because we are dealing with many-many fish being caught that have to be thrown back in with the adipose fin. The ODFW sure had it right this year when they predicted there would be a ton of fish out there. What they did not get right was that they didn't do a very good job of fin clipping very many of them. The bottom line is we as professional charter boat operators are trying very hard to release the fish unharmed but some are dying. That sad truth very simply is it is a shame. These fish are so big and healthy to have one of them die because it had to be released knowing it was going to die because the way it was hooked seems like close to a crime. Those the rules.........
Bottom fishing started off slow with no current on the bottom fishing grounds but as soon as it started to move things lit off. Of course on the way home the crabs lit off again as they have been doing most of the summer.
Seems like a great time to go Tuna fishing but no trips out lately anywhere in the harbor. I am sure they are close in as the maps show that. We do have trips this weekend for those interested.

Another fantastic fishing day @Tradewinds
The salmon fishing held up another day as they were offshore a ways but they proved to be on the bite and a few less natives to deal with today it sounded like. I was not sure of the average catch per rod so I will not try to make a guess but it sounded like on the radio that the catch was as good as it has been the past few days.
Bottom fishing was very good and the crabbing was even better. Sounded like some very good variety with a mixture of Lingcod in the mix as well. I know there were some very nice Cabezon caught today as well.

Excellent salmon fishing & Just as good bottom fishing
Tuna trip cancelled due to rough choppy waters offshore
Crabbing was GREAT
The salmon were on the bite for all of our boats on Monday morning and "folks" are they getting "BIG". One boat had a limit and the others were were around the one and a half fish per rod average. That is good fishing folks as getting limits with this 3-fish bag limit and all of the throw backs is not likely. The smaller guys now weigh in around seven pounds and there have been some that are topping out in the 12-13 pound range. Boy, can they put up a fight. Had a sea lion following one of the boats all morning and never got one fish. That was the worse fishing sea lion that has ever inhabited the ocean waters. The sea lion then followed the boat all the way into the bottom fishing spots as the boat was on a "8-hr trifecta combo trip" where he did summersaults around the boat for ten minutes or so. ONLY out of Tradewinds Charters.
Bottom fishing was great this morning with very quick limits on the rockfish and there were some Lingcod in the catch today. There were two very nice Halibut caught on the bottom fishing grounds this morning. That is about since the 1st of May twenty-five Halibut caught on Tradewinds boats bottom fishing. That has to be some kind of a unkept record.
The tuna trip ventured out this morning only to find very windy choppy waters and turned around and went salmon fishing instead. Other trips will be going out later this week

The salmon were on the bite once again Sunday morning about eight miles offshore. The Tradewinds fleet averaged around a fish and a half a rod and a little better on a few boats. Lots of action and unfortunately lots of throw back fish.
The bottom fishing started out very slow but heated up towards the end of the trip to make it a good trip with some nice Lingcod hitting the filet tables as well. On the way home the crabbing was excellent again as it has been for most of the summer.

Summer fishing heating up
The salmon fishing after Fridays red-hot bite cooled off a little bit on Saturday morning only to turn back on again Saturday afternoon. Morning fishing historically is better for all fish species but on Saturday it was better for the salmon in the afternoon. There were some "big boys" caught in the afternoon as well with about a fourth of the fish being 12 pound pigs. This must be a sign of how lively and in good shape that the ocean is this summer off of the Oregon Coast.
Bottom fishing was really good again but the Lingcod bite which was good for a few days last week has gone down to where it is a tough catch again with only a few hitting the filet tables on Saturday. The crabbing remains good even though it was a little slower on Saturday mainly because of the larger surf we were forced to crab out in deeper water. We will get back in to the better area as the ocean goes back down to its normal summer size.

Salmon Back On The Bite
Remember that $70 Salmon Special Sunday thru Friday
Several of the Tradewinds boats got limits on the salmon this morning as the fish were located in deep water straight out in front of Depoe Bay . Other Tradewinds boats had plenty of action and great scores on the salmon as well. Tradewinds this morning had probably the first "big boat" to get a salmon limit in a long time maybe even a year or so. It was just good fishing this morning and on afternoon trips . Lets hope it keeps up.
The bottom fishing was also very good with close to limits on the rockfish but not as many of the toothy Lingcod on the bite this morning as in past days. Crabbing again proved to be a special affair as it seems to be a Tradewinds exclusive.
More Tuna coming up this weekend and as always we will keep you informed.

Salmon fishing improved & bottom fishing still GREAT
Crabbing the best it has been all year
The salmon fishing improved a little today but still the cold water is holding the action down. We did bag around one fish per rod this morning on an average and we would like to see it a whole lot better then that. For now, it is what it is.
Bottom fishing was great today with limits or close to limits on the rockfish and even some limits on the Lingcod. There were just lots & lots of Lingcod caught today but many were the nursery fish and had to be thrown back in. Good information to have though for the future of the Lingcod stocks. The crabbing.....FANTASTIC!!!. Two boats averaged ten crabs per person. That is quite unusual but it happened today.

Cold water still a problem for the salmon but bottom fishing heating up
Remember the Tradewinds Salmon $70 Discounts
The salmon still is on the pokey side as the water is very slowly warming up but still a few degrees below where we would like it. The bottom fishing after a few days of hard work to get the baskets full heated up today and the catches were very good and the Lingcod bite remains good on all of our boats. The crabbing again was very-very good.
Tuna fishing returns tomorrow and we will have a report for you hopefully by late afternoon.

Lingcod Bonanza
It was a Lingcod catch-a-Thon this morning and several boats limited on the "toothy critters" and the other three bottom fishing boats did exceedingly well on them. The strange thing about the morning is how hard we had yo work on the rockfish limit. Probably none of the boats limited on the rockfish even though we were all close but the "COD" sure made up for everything else. Crabbing again was just excellent with many very hard crabs with only just a few soft ones we tossed back in.
Salmon got off to a great start then went spotty again as the morning went on. The good news is that the winds are way down and even though we have no southerlies in the forecast that will warm the water up quick the no-wind will slowly do the trick. If things stay the same for a few days look for salmon to heat up again as well as the Tuna.

Ever heard about the eye wall of a hurricane?
The bottom fishing boats on Monday morning had an interesting phenomena as we started out the day in some pretty windy-testy conditions. After we got about two miles north of Depoe Bay things mellowed out where we were at least able to run to the bottom grounds with some comfort. Once we got there we were fishing in a zero wind, no swell almost flat ocean for a good while. It was like being in the eye wall of a hurricane. After a few hours the winds kicked back in but by that time we had a good part of the trip completed. Fishing was a little slow this morning but we did get some really nice LIngcod on the trips.
Salmon fishing continues to be spotty as the cold water is having an effect on the catching. We were able to boat some fish and some other action but we have to describe it as a pokey day.

Current Report:
Windy choppy cold water
The salmon fishing was quite pokey on Sunday as the water temperature continues to drop as heavy northerly winds continue in the area for the fifth straight day. We are looking for a break in the winds so the water can warm up again. When that happens we will have great salmon fishing again.
The same thing was also working against the tuna boats as the colder water scatters the fish and the bite then becomes scattered. That to will improve back to normal with less wind and warmer water.
It didn't effect the bottom fishing and the crabbing however. We had outstanding scores on the rockfish and the Lingcod bite was terrific today. My theory is when the water turns colder the rockfish are a little slower to the bait thus giving the Lingcod a better chance of getting to it. The result is more LIngcod and we did have excellent Lingcod scores today. The crabbing was outrageous. Some of the bigger boats with more pots to dump had over 75 crabs each. Good day...........

Pokey salmon fishing in the morning but much improved in the afternoon
Great bottom fishing mixed in with some nice Lingcod and super crabbing
Tuna fishing saw somewhat decent scores but the fish were scattered about
The tuna fishing saw fish fairly close in and the water looked good and finding the warmer water was easy to find. The fish however were scattered about and they were not able to find the big flurry of action they had before the northerly winds came back. Every passenger brought back fish and hopefully it will be better action on Sunday.
Salmon fishing was weird Saturday with pokey results in the morning but much improved in the afternoon with some nice scores and much more action. The fish we are getting are also beginning to put on the weight like they do at the mid-summer time period.
Bottom fishing was great morning and afternoon with a sprinkling of Lingcod in the baskets and some outstanding crab action overloading the Tradewinds cookers.

Coho Salmon Quota Information
Thru July 12th the salmon quota has caught 19.7% of the available 110,000 fish quota. Don't forget though we have an additional season beginning in September which will be a 2-fish bag limit per day.

Salmon improving...Bottom fishing great=...Tuna fishing tomorrow
Salmon fishing improved a little bit Friday with some warmer water found offshore about seven miles and with the forecast for less wind we expect the salmon to begin biting like they were soon. One boat had a five fish clatter today and all five fish were boated and remarkably all five fish were legal to keep. Hard to imagine with this adipose fin thing.
Bottom fishing started out quickly and then went dead for a long time and then finished up with a bang with some Lingcod for the third day in a row biting somewhat better. Limits on the rockfish and another great day on the crabs.
Tuna reports begin in ernest again tomorrow with two boats heading offshore in the morning and three on Sunday. There is still limited space available for Sunday. Should be good fishing as the computers say that the warmer currents aren't to far offshore.

Current Report:
Colder water cools down the catch (just a little)
The salmon fishing was a little bit cool today like the ocean water which took a dip down a bit with the northerly winds we have had the past few days. Most of the heavy winds are done after today so we will begin to see a gradual warm up of the water and the good salmon fishing will return.
Bottom fishing continues to be strong as does the crabbing. Good catches of both the rockfish and crabs today with a improvement in the Lingcod bite. The cool water helps the Lingcod bite as the cooler water makes the rockfish a little bit less hungry which gives the Lingcod a fighting chance at the bait we are presenting to them. At least that is my theory.
We get back to tuna fishing this weekend so we will have a report for you Saturday afternoon. The next Halibut opener begins in August.

Fog and a little wind dominated the day
The northerly winds returned and them temperature of the water dropped a few degrees overnight and the salmon bite was scattered most of the morning with somewhere between 1 fish to 1.5 fish per rod Wednesday. This will not be a long windy cycle as things should be all cleared up by Friday so they say into the weekend.
Bottom fishing and crabbing remained good this morning with good catches of each and even some of the Lingcod bite returned this morning. Not great numbers of them but better then it has been.
No tuna trips this morning because of the windy conditions offshore but we are returning to the action this weekend so get onboard if you want your canned tuna for the winter.

Tuna fishing was great on Tuesday with some good scores offshore even though the day turned very choppy the later part of the trip. That is six Tuna trips so far this year for the fleet and great scores on all trips with scores around 4-7 fish per rod.
Salmon fishing today was not as red hot as it has been the past few days but it was very consistent all day with scores above the 2-fish per rod average. There were many-many throw backs today with the adipose fin and it seemed quite a few more then anytime this summer. Thats fishing....
Bottom fishing was once again very good with only a few Lingcod hitting the filet tables with crabbing spectacular again with 5-6 crabs per person on the average.

Tuna (Wow) Salmon (Wow) Bottom fishing (Great) Crabbing (even better)
What a day of fishing on a great ocean; a little drizzly in the morning and sun drenched in the afternoon.
Salmon fishing was just like the 1980's with pretty much non-stop action for the first couple of hours and then the scratch fishing for the rest of the trip. Well over 2+-fish per rod this morning and about the same in the afternoon fishing.
Tuna fishing only from Tradewinds was a drop them in and start reeling. The boat was home early in the afternoon with plenty of fish. The folks onboard just got tired of reeling in the 18-32 pound monsters. A greta day to be off shore.
Bottom fishing was quick limits also on the rock fish with a few Lingcod on the filet table as well. Crabbing for the past week has been very good and today was no exception.

This bargain price will be every day except for Saturday. The fish are biting, there is a 3-fish bag limit and the ocean is great.
Salmon fishing today was another great day with over 2-fish per rod on a average which has held up now for about the past week. The fish are getting bigger by the week and the fight in them is also. Now is the time to make your reservation and fish with the "very best" for your winter freezer salmon.
The boats were not back in at "story time" today but all indications and radio talk is that another good day is being had out on the tuna grounds by the Tradewinds boats. The bottom fish bit like fleas today but the lingcod bite continues to be off somewhat as it has been for several weeks now. The crabbing on the other hand is spectacular with great scores off every boat today and a very large majority of them are hard crab. We are getting many of them that have barnacles on their top shell and that is some kind of indication of hard crab as they are not molting.

What a day.............
The ocean was beautiful and the sun was shining down on Tradewinds Charters as we had one of our salmon boats limit on the Coho salmon and several more with excellent scores of about two fish around. There seems to be many fish out there and it is a great deal of fun as even some of our customers commented even though they did not limit they got to reel in quite a few fish. As you might know if the adipose fin is present it must be returned to the ocean waters. There was lots of action out there today and everyone got to reel in a number of fish. Right now it is great salmon fishing but there will be those normal up and down periods through out the summer. Come on down and join in on the fun.
Watch for the initial tuna report beginning tomorrow as we have several boats heading out in the morning for the first of the year charter ventures. Word is that the fish are about twenty miles right out in front of the harbor. Should be a great day.
Not to be dismissed, the bottom fishing and crabbing was on the bite today with good scores on the rockfish and the crabs. The Lingcod are just to be up front and honest off the bite and have been for a week or so now. This will change as something out there in the ocean will change and then they will go on the bite again. I even heasrd that the commercial boys were having a tough time catching them. It is normal for this time of year but it will come back strong shortly.

One of our charter boats had over 30 salmon on the hooks and came back in with a great catch.
The bottom fishing and crabbing was awesome today... just like always.

Lots to report
We are currently booking Albacore Tuna trips for this week so be first in line to get your tuna for the season. Reports have them in range and a number of sport boats brought back in quite a number of tuna over the weekend. Should be a great season.
Salmon fishing was a wee-bit better Monday morning but still a wee-bit slow. The ocean temperatures are back up to where they were so we should (?) begin to see the fish return quickly if all things are like they usually are over the years past.
Bottom fishing was very good again today but we did have to work at it to get the fish. The best fishing is up North off of Lincoln City about 8 miles and the Tradewind boats consistently are the ones that are up there where the better and bigger variety of fish live. The evidence is with the larger Lingcod we catch and the number of Halibut our boats have caught this year on bottom fishing trips.

Over ninety (90) Albacore tuna hit the sport filet tables yesterday (Saturday) in Depoe Bay and there were a few boats out there today so I was told. The ocean temperature picture shows the warm water is out there and the "Tuna rush is on"! We are booking trips as we speak and the weather looks good through at least next Friday on the long term forecast so the time is finally here. Start your engines!!
Inshore we are still dealing with colder water and the salmon bite is still slow. The winds are now blowing out of the South so look for the waters to warm up and the salmon bite to improve shortly.
Bottom fishing was very good today with good crabbing also. There was a good assortment of rockfish along with some nice Cabezon and Lingcod.
Three more Halibut were caught in the past several days on bottom fishing trips. That makes close to 20 of the flat critters caught in the past 4-6 weeks on inshore shallow water bottom fishing trips. Several of them had to be returned to the water as they were caught this weekend on a offshore halibut day. That might sound silly but that is the law!!

Bottom fishing again today was excellent with rockfish limits and very good crabbing for all who participated. Not quite sure of the Lingcod bite this morning if it was as good as it was yesterday or not?

Tuna "YES"...Bottom fishing "yes"...Salmon Fishing "well not so good"
First some new news. There was a good catch for Albacore tuna northwest of Depoe Bay today well within the range of the Depoe Bay boats. So the rush is on and we will be booking trips IMMEDIATELY for the Albacore season. Be the first to get your freezer tuna only from Tradewinds.
Salmon fishing today was on the slow side. There were some caught and a number of bites but the scores were the low point of the season thus far. Please try not to listen to OTHERS that might exaggerate the catch as being good for the day. We feel that the reason is the cold water and now since the weather has changed and the cold winds are gone it could all change very quickly.
Bottom fishing on the other hand was red hot with not only rockfish limits but a great catch of Lingcod as well with well over one per customer on our boats this morning. Crabbing was also very good with 25-40 crabs on the bigger boats which are good scores.

It was bound to happen....
The salmon bite went sour for most boats this morning except for one. Out of all the boats in the harbor (sport or charter) there was one Tradewinds boat that boated 15 fish which was by light years the best score of the day. Salmon fishing historically is like this but after a few lean years we had all forgotten. As one large school of fish go through the area then we sit and wait for the next school to arrive. So here we wait....
Bottom fishing was pretty darn good this morning. It was not a heavy bite but the folks from Tradewinds did such a good job of working at it by the end of the trip things were looking really good. Several boats limited on the rockfish and one boat had a bucket load of Lingcod as well. Crabbing was not spectacular but not bad as we were forced because of the threat of a heavy swell and winds to lay the pots in deeper water then we normally do.
By the way the weather forecast all the way into next week looks really good.
Don't forget we can fish halibut Friday and Saturday of this week.

The salmon are still out there
Two boats out salmon fishing on this Wednesday and both boats averaged about one and a half fish per rod as far as take home fish. There were many more throwbacks and fish on and off as again the winds and moderate seas playing a part in the catch or non-catching. The good news is that the northerly winds are holding the fish in the area when the winds calm down which is suppose to be Friday all the way into next week so the forecast is saying. The winds are finally getting out of here. That should also improve the bottom fishing as the water will warm up some and the crabbing as well.
Remember this is a halibut weekend as well with open days Thursday through Saturday.
Tuna about ready to begin

A Better Fish Story Today
The salmon after a few days of windy rough water are still out there and still biting. Todays trips we were able to run and it was a bit cranky but the skippers did say that the water was actually nicer offshore then it was inshore. With the water so cold the better fishing was offshore which makes sense as the salmon will swim to water a bit warmer then our inshore 45 degrees we have now. Still it sounds like all of this wind will be out of here by Thursday maybe and for sure on Friday. Lots of action and only about 1-fish plus around but lots of throwbacks on a day that you wouldn't want that to happen and quite a number of fish on the poles and escaped.
Bottom fishing even with the cold lumpy water turned on again this morning which proves only that even "cold fish" like people have to eat. Limits or near limits around on the rockfish and a few Lingcod in the fish baskets.

Yes, it was windy and semi-rough out on the waters this morning but we had folks who wanted ot go so we went and gave it a try. The ocean proved to be fishable but the current was so strong and the water so "COLD" that the fish just would not bite. After giving it a good try we heard that the Depoe Bay bar was roughing up so the two vessels headed for home as safety of our folks is always important. Hopefully the heat in the valley which causes these winds quite often will cool off and these winds will go away. Until then we are looking at improving conditions but still on the windy side.

Yes, fishing sometimes is slow
It was a tough day out on the pond Sunday morning both on the bottom fishing side and the salmon fishing side. If you would allow me the luxury of an excuse the weather was really tough this morning. The ocean had no swell to speak of but we experienced probably about 6 foot of wind chop and winds exceeding 25-knots the whole morning long. The current was running along very quickly which added to the difficulties. Salmon fishing was slow with not the action we have had the past week and bottom fishing except for one boat who hit the right spot at the right time was also pokey. No crabbing today due to the windy conditions. Better days are coming.

Another Interesting Day
Well here we are almost to the 1st of July and some of those pesky Northwest winds we get in the summer here are around but thank goodness they normally do not come up with any force to them until mid-afternoon. The good news is that the northerly winds school up the salmon but the not-so-good news is that the water temperature goes down which make the bottom fish somewhat lazy and forces the warm ocean currents further offshore. The offshore water temperature is critical to the arrival of the Albacore tuna. The bottom fishing was good but it was harder work then it normally is with the cold water. The salmon fishing on the other hand was very good with one of our boats collecting over thirty salmon on their boat this morning. There were several near limits on the smaller boats and probably right around a 2-fish average from our fleet. Crabbing was in the off day mode with many females and smaller crabs in the pots. Good day all around..........

Salmon & bottom fishing report
The ocean after a day of rough conditions behaved Friday morning somewhat but was what we sometimes call a "big boat day". The bottom fishing was good but the Lingcod fishing proved to be a little on the slower side this morning. No crabbing was done on the bottom fishing trips this morning.
On the salmon side a slight reversal of the norm with better ocean conditions offshore then the choppy conditions inshore. The salmon were hot and cold this morning with a good early bite, a slow bite in the middle of the trip and then another good bite down the stretch. The scores were between 1.5 fish per rod to a high of 2-fish per rod. All in all a good morning for the Coho salmon bite.

Tuna Update
The update on the tuna is "not yet". We are awaiting for some better satellite images from offshore and some reports from the commercial fleet. It wont be long however as sometime normally after the 1st of July the warmer currents begin to move closer to shore and the Tuna do as well. They have to get inside 25-35 miles to make it a reasonable venture to go out to try to find them. Keep in touch solely on this website and you for sure will hear it here first!!

Red Hot Salmon Fishing
Limits and near limits today as the Wednesday fishing was the best it has been since the start of the season last Saturday with lots of action and quite a few boats back in early. There are lots of fish out there folks. Come on down and get in on the action.
Bottom fishing and crabbing was also very good today on another great looking ocean that we have been blessed with for most of the last month.

Great bottom fishing
Great Salmon fishing
Limits on the rockfish and they were extra large "piggy" size rockfish today. Our bottom fishing boats found the adults only reef this morning and they were larger then normal rockfish. A good catch on the Lingcod today as well and one boat caught and released very carefully a 30+ pound Chinook salmon. No, we can't keep the Chinook until this fishery re-opens next March. Crabbing was good again with the 3-crab average per person we seem to be getting here lately.
The salmon fishery went very well this morning as most boats had about a 2-fish average aboard. That is really good fishing especially as some boats get bogged down with the native fish that had to be released. If you get lucky on the natives there is more then enough action to put some fish on the decks and in the freezer for the winter.

Loads of Salmon Action
There are four or five Tradewinds salmon boats out this morning and in listening to the boat radios the information we are hearing from this mornings trips is that there is loads of action taking place out there and plenty of fish being caught. There are also lots of the so-called native Coho salmon being caught along with the catching and those fish have to be released back in the ocean waters. With the three fish bag limit finding limits are tough to come by but some great take home scores are happening. After the third day of the salmon season it appears at least for now that the predictions made by the fisheries experts are in fact coming true with lots of fish out there. Lets hope it lasts the whole summer so we can get some of those bigger fish which we will be seeing later in July thru August. Don't forget we also have another quota of salmon to be caught in September and those will be large fish. The summer is getting off to a great start.

Cranky ocean on Sunday
Heavy rains and wind overnight made the ocean a bit on the cranky side on Sunday but all of the boats got out and the salmon were still producing fairly good results offshore about four miles. There was lots of action reported and quite a few being landed as well. Sounds like the same as Saturday.
Bottom fishing was also fairly good with not many LIngcod hitting the decks but mostly limits coming home on the rockfish and some nice Cabezon in the mix.
Crabbing was also a mixed bag with some good pots full of crab and then others were empty and they were right next to one another?? About three crab per person was the average.

Salmon on the bite
Bottom fish on the bite also
Excellent crabbing as well
Well the 2009 salmon season finally is here and the anticipation and unknowns of the opening day are now behind us and the news is good hopefully for a summer full of salmon activity. Though limits were not to be found mostly because of this 3-fish bag limit but a guess at about a fish and a half per customer would be a conservative estimate of the Saturday salmon bite. There was lots of action with loads of fish on and then spitting the hook and there were also quite a few native salmon that had to be released. There were a few fish in the smaller five pound range and a few in the nine pound range. Most averaged for the opening day around a 6-7 pound average. It sure was fun!!
Bottom fishing was excellent with limits all the way around the Tradewinds fleet on the rockfish with some great variety in Quilback and Vermillion rockfish with some nice Cabezon and Lingcod mixed in the fish totes. Crabbing was also excellent with a 3-4 crab average on the boats per customer.

Weather change hits the coast Friday morning...
Forecasters say things will clear up somewhat for Saturday which is the opening of the summer salmon season.
For the first time in over three weeks we had a weather change hit us on the coast this morning with rather unpleasant stormy conditions. We had our Halibut boat turned back by the weather but we did sneak two bottom fishing boats out and they had decent trips even with the elements. For some reason the fish just always bite on these types of seas especially the Lingcod. Not any limits on the Lingcod but some decent scores.

It appears the salmon are here ?
Well folks as we approach the eve of the opening of the 2009 salmon season it appears from our scouts who seem to know these things that the salmon are out there. It seems like all that the fish and wildlife experts have been predicting might just be true. Of course Saturday morning will be the first indication or test to all of this but all the signs look increasingly positive.
Bottom fishing on this Thursday on another flat ocean very warm day for the Oregon Coast was very good once again with a fair bite on the Lingcod with some good variety of rockfish as well. Crabbing was hit and miss with a few very good scores and another not so good. They were crabbing in different places so we won't crab in the bad place anymore.

Warm and fishy
Another spectacular day out on the water Wednesday morning and the rockfish were on the bite but just a little below average day on the Lingcod as it has been the past few days. The rockfish were of very nice quality this morning and because of the warm temperatures a few Kelp flies were landing on the boat as well. When you have warm sunny days on the ocean waters in Oregon it usually means a few flies landing on the boats looking for a ride. The crabbing was really good this morning also.

Same song different day
Another beautiful ocean and another good day of fishing. Sorry, I can't report a halibut hitting the decks on this day but the rockfish bite was hot and heavy and Lingcod fishing was a little bit better then it was the day before. There were some nice variety of rockfish caught as some Copper rockfish, Cabezon, Vermillion rockfish and Sea trout to name a few were in quite large numbers today. That makes the fishing baskets look a little colorful especially on such a beautiful day.
Salmon season opens up this Saturday upcoming and this week also opens a three day offshore halibut opener for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
No real encouraging news thus far as to the Albacore tuna as the reports we have heard places them still a little too far out of our reach but it is still very early. Usually the tuna fishing begins sometime in July.

Flat & Fishy
Going on the record here and maybe stretching things a wee-bit but the ocean has never been flatter. The outside sea buoy which sits a mile offshore looks like a huge statue out there because it looks to project above the water so high. Air temperatures are quite warm in the low 70's so early in the morning and barely a hint of breeze in the air. The only thing that could make that any better would be a "big bite" from the fish and we did on the rockfish as it was as we call it "hard to keep them off". The Lingcod were off the bite today with just a few landing in the nets. Crabbing on the other hand was pretty good once again with that three-average-around close to the catch today.

Beautiful ocean ... Pretty good fishing...Good crabbing
The ocean returned from the Saturday crankiness to another beautiful day with light winds and hardly any swell which made for a great ride for the passengers this morning. The rockfish catch was once again fantastic even though it was not hot and heavy anytime during the morning. The passengers on all the boats worked hard and by the end of the trip all had pocketed their limits. In the mix were some nice Cabezon and I saw another nice Halibut boarded this morning. The Lingcod was a wee-bit on the slower side with just a fair number who made it to the filet tables. The crabbing on the way home turned out to be very good with a 3-crab per person average. Another good Tradewinds day!!

Did you hear the thunder?
Last night we had some serious rain fall in our area for about an hour around the 3am hour and we had a few heavy showers in the bay as we awaited to pick up the folks at the Tradewinds dock. The ocean for the first part of the morning was like it heard the thunder and saw the lightning as it was a little "cranky out there" but settled down nicely about mid-morning. Oh yes, how about the fishing? Well it got off to a somewhat slow start but ended up with a bang. Two boats caught there limits on the lingcod as well with all of the others decking a good number and some nice Cabezon as well. Rockfish limits all the way around on the Tradewinds boats and was not sure of the crabbing bite this morning. I heard one report that there were lots of crabs in the pots but many throw-backs in undersize and females. So sorry, no official report.
Oh yes, one other rather minor report. Another big halibut caught on a Tradewinds boat this morning which accounts to well over a dozen caught on bottom fishing trips over the past ten days. Don't recall a halibut bite like this spring/summer in this number in many years past.

More halibut caught Wednesday on bottom fishing trips
This has been some spring and beginning of summer for halibut catch on our five hour bottom fishing trips. So far this spring there has been close to a dozen caught already and two more today were landed on the decks out of Tradewinds Charters. One of them was landed by a 8-year old boy who caught a 45-inch halibut and another gentlemen caught another on the same boat. Both of them again caught on spinning gear set-ups. How much fun can that be??
Speaking of halibut the spring offshore season is closed at least until the ODFW meets Friday of this week to evaluate the catch and to determine if there is enough of the quota to re-open it for future weekends. Here are the numbers as of now:
Quota (spring season) lbs 124,261
Remaining lbs 71,386
% Remaining 57%
Looks like plenty of fishing for halibut remains.
On the bottom fishing front today other then those halibut folks had another great day with limits on the rockfish and a good number of lingcod hitting the filet tables as well. It was a interesting day on the crabbing front with some boats doing just average and others doing really well.
A good day all around.

Big Halibut (WOW) - Lingcod & the usual rockfish and crabs
It has been a great spring leading up into summer for halibut on bottom fishing trips this year with close to a dozen so far and 5-6 of those have been in the past week or two. It seems like there are more of them on the inside reefs this year then in years past. Today was the "real grand-daddy with a 52-inch halibut" hitting the decks of one of our boats on a spinning rod supported by a 2 ounce jig. Think of how much fun that had to be??!!
It was another good day of fishing for the more normal fish caught on the bottom trips with a good array of Lingcod hitting the decks along with that usual limit of the rockfish. I head also that there was a better then average catch on the Dungeness crab as well as they too were on the bite Tuesday morning.
Another good sign was the boat skippers are reporting seeing many salmon swirling around in the waters which makes for some high expectations for the upcoming Coho salmon season which opens a week from this coming Saturday, June 20th. Remember, Tradewinds is offering salmon discount tickets by calling our office and mentioning this add. One of the boats caught a beautiful Halibut this morning as that is about a half dozen caught so far on bottom fishing trips in the past month. Also two of the boats reported catching multiple salmon which is a great sign as we approach the start of the Coho salmon season in less then two weeks. There were so many bait balls of sardines we were even catching them on the bottom fish rigs. Crabbing was very good today with close to a three per person average.

Choppy seas Saturday but decent fishing
Had a little surprise on Saturday morning as we woke to fairly choppy waters off of Depoe Bay and it was certainly what we call sometimes a "big boat day". The rockfish bite was excellent after a slower start but they were all rounded up by the end of the trip. The Lingcod fishing was slower this morning then it has been probably because of the swirling currents Saturday morning but the real culprit was the emense bait that was in the water. For the 2nd day in a row the ocean waters in this area were just plugged with bait from top to bottom. It was a wonder how the rockfish even bit let alone the Lingcod. The crabbing was excellent as about 8-keeper crabs per pot were hitting the decks today.
Halibut Forced Back To Shore
The halibut boats were forced back to harbor for the 2nd Saturday in a row due to rough and windy conditions offshore. The ODFW will now evaluate the halibut spring quota where most observers are sure they will find that quite a chunk of the quota still remains. Keep the dial right here and we will inform you as soon as they tell us the next weekend of openers for the halibut season.

The rockfish bite was fast and furious Friday morning with the Lingcod bite a wee-bit on the slower side in the morning even though there were some caught. Quite a few throw back Lingcod this morning but to make up for it there were some nice size Cabezon to help ease the pain.
Saw some nice size halibut brought also to the docks in the early afternoon with one more day of fishing Saturday before the ODFW evaluates the spring quota. The chances are for additional weekends of fishing are pretty good so we hear from the chatter on the docks. You will hear it here when any announcements are made.

There were a few boats that were crabbing but no report came our way. Sunday and next week is forecasted for the return to some nice pre-summer conditions.

Great halibut numbers from the boats today as we had the smallest fish on the deck measured about 36 inches with most over 40 inch fish and several over the 45 inch mark. Much better quality beginning to show up as in the past weeks as far as fish size goes.
The bottom fishing and crabbing once again was terrific with great Lingcod catches and limits on the rockfish. The crabbing has been fairly consistent the past few days with about 3-crabs around per person on the average. The weather looks good for the weekend so it is a great time to escape the heat over in the valley areas.

Two more days of fishing this week and with the mention of this add you get a $20 discount off your halibut trip through Saturday June 6th.
On the bottom fishing side of things another great trip with limits on both the Lingcod and the rockfish ruled the day. Nice size Lingcod hit the filet tables and a good number of crabs were also caught today.

Sometimes it is just hard to explain so we blame something else
Tradewinds had just about every boat out Sunday morning and every boat had a great trip for the first two hours. The Lingcod and Cabezon were biting like fleas and every boat brought back a good many of those critters and were throwing back about ten Lingcod undersize fellas for every one they could keep. That was the first two hours and in that time with constant action on the above mentioned critters and quite a number of sea trout there were very few of the ol' standby black sea bass on the hooks. In the final three hours again very few sea bass caught and the other ones that were biting stopped also. Thanks to the first two hours we had decent catches for the folks but the charter fleet all agree that the fault is on the back of the very cold water we have right now due to all those winds. We the skippers all voted to put the blame there !!

Wind Fishing Produced...for a While
No halibut boats ventured out this morning due to the heavy winds offshore. Actually, we did not even run a trip this week to the offshore halibut sights due to the winds that have been with us now for five days. The forecast for next week looks better for halibut fishing. The good news is that we will most certainly get more weekends to fish the halibut after the first four weeks it appears now.
So, we all went bottom fishing Saturday morning. It was windy on the inside waters as well but not as windy as offshore and fishable. We had some interesting results with good fishing right at the start on the rockfish and then they went back to bed but had a heavy bite on the Lingcod most of the morning. Lots of throwbacks but still had excellent scores on the "Lings" even with the windy conditions. No crabbing the past several days due to the ocean conditions.
Don't forget about the halibut discount still available the next two weekends of halibut fishing. Mention this add when you make your reservation and get a $20 discount off your trip. Thats a deal!!

Tie Those Hats Down !!
Ocean fishing on Thursday was the kind of day where your lead and bait never hits the bottom because of the speed of the drift which was said to be around 2.5 knots. For you folks who spend most of your time on dry land that is “really moving". You basically let out about a hundred foot of line and “let er’ fly" so to speak and wait for something to eat it. When the fish are hungry they will find the bait no matter what it is doing down there and the fish did that very thing. The final score from the report was near limits on the two boats we had out on the rockfish and remarkably enough in that kind of current a good batch of Lingcod as well (Some nice big ones) . You had to “mash down" your hat to your head to keep it from blowing away but it turned out be a good day once again.

Good Fishing Wednesday
Sounded like there was some decent fishing out there Wednesday morning with an excellent bite from the lingcod and the usual limit on the rockfish. We are into a very windy pattern over the next 4-5 days so we are hopeful for that small window first thing in the morning to get some fishing in as we have some heavy winds forecasted through the first part of next week.

Yesterday Slow Crabbing, Today Fantastic…..
As I spoke about yesterday when you fish and crab on a bottom fishing trip you want to catch crab, catch rockfish and get a share of the lingcod. Today we were able to do that with a limit catch of rockfish, about 1.5 Lingcod around and believe it, 56 crabs for seven folks. What a great day as only Tradewinds can do it. Crab salad for everyone tonight!!

The Up's & Down's of Fishing
When you are on a bottom fish and crab trip you have three basic goals which are to catch rockfish, catch Lingcod and come up with a good average on the crabs in pulling the pots on the way home. It happens quite often when you do well on all three but half-the-time you may run a little short of one of the three and this morning the crabs were off the bite. Some of the Ling's were of very nice size and there was a nice mixture of Cabezon, Vermillion and Tiger rockfish in the mix as well. So, I guess you would have to call it a good day on a very nice ocean.

As Summer gets Closer So Does Salmon & Tuna Fishing
With that 3-fish bag limit we are already getting quite a number of early reservations for the Coho salmon season which opens up June 20th and runs 7-days a week. We expect with the large quota that it should last most if not all the way through the summer. We also have an extended salmon fishery with it's own quota for September. All of the state fishery experts are saying that the fish are going to be there in large numbers so make plans now for some great salmon fishing this summer.
Usually the Albacore tuna fishing starts up in early July but one year a few years back it actually started in late June. Keep track of all of the fisheries we participate in here in the Depoe Bay, Oregon area on our daily updated fishing report page. When it happens, you will hear it here @ Tradewinds.

Back to the Bottom Fishing
As the final day of the 1st week of spring halibut season passed by Saturday we were all back to bottom fishing and crabbing on this Sunday and await the 2nd week of halibut fishing beginning next Thursday. The ocean was very nice again this morning with eight Tradewinds boats out on the bottom grounds and all finishing the day with rockfish limits and a very good supply of Lingcod as well. The Lingcod were somewhat off the bite the past two days but came back strong today with good numbers on all our boats Sunday. Crabbing appeared to also be going good this morning as the springtime crabbing is picking up as they move further in towards the beaches.
Don’t forget the Website Halibut Special. Mention this add when making your halibut reservations the next three weeks and get a $20 discount on your trip per person. Thursday, May 21st is the next halibut opener and continues for the three day a week openers through the weekend

Growing Bigger By the Day
For the third day in a row the Tradewinds halibut boats stole the thunder for the halibut offshore trips and returned early with fish that seemed to grow bigger each day. Each day the average size of the fish we brought home were about 2-inches larger each day. Saturday the final day of the 1st week we were averaging about 35-38 inch fish on an average with some larger ones in the mid to upper 40's.
Three weeks left of the spring inshore season before the ODFW looks at the catch data and determines if we will have another couple of weekends of fishing. Until then, take advantage of the discount Tradewinds is offering for the next three weekends of halibut fishing with a $20 discount on all halibut trips. The cost will be $190 if you mention this add.
Another great bottom fishing day with rockfish limits everywhere as every boat not halibut fishing was bottom fishing. There were quite a few Lingcod caught but no boat limits on those critters but a crab average around 3-per person on the boats crabbing. Another great day.

Halibut Limits Again
Some of the spots closer to Depoe Bay where in the past have been quite productive we heard today that they were a total bust pretty much for halibut catch. The two Tradewinds boats did the “extra mile" literally and went the 35 miles out to the “ranch" as it is called and limited early and back at the dock just after 1pm. The fish were on an average about two inches larger then the opening day catch on Thursday. There were quite a few fish over the 42-inch mark and most were in the 36 to 39 inch range with a few smaller guys. All in all another great day with one more day this week to go.
Don’t Forget the website Special for Halibut /
$190 for the first four weeks - Just mention this add
The inshore bottom fishing was a bit slow Friday morning before it took off late with some of the larger rockfish in aggravate we have seen for some time. The Lingcod were somewhat pokey on this day but the crabbing was excellent with close to four keepers per person.

Halibut on the Bite
Tradewinds had one boat out to the halibut grounds Thursday morning and the ride out after the past few days of bad weather was a little on the rocky side but as the trip grew longer on the way out the ocean began to calm down as the forecast predicted that it would. The fishing was very good with many fish caught, as the ocean got nicer and nicer. There were quite a few smaller fish in the area this morning so it seemed for every fish kept they were throwing back 2-3 in an attempt to upgrade to a larger fish. The boat was successful with this action. Most of the fish were medium grade in the 34-38 inch range with some very nice 42+inch fish caught as well. Everyone got to reel up quite a few fish and everyone including crew came home with their freezer halibut. Friday and Saturday look like flat oceans and very nice days out on the halibut grounds.
Bottom Fish also on the Bite
One bottom fishing boat out Thursday morning and the fish after several days to rest because of the rough waters were hungry and on the bite. Not a lot of lingcod were caught but the ones they caught were of above average quality. There were also some very nice Cabezon in the fish baskets as well.

The Day of the Cabezon
On a beautiful Oregon Coast day with sunshine and flat ocean conditions the fishing passengers out of Tradewinds were greeted to a great catch of rockfish with all passengers out of the Tradewinds dock Sunday morning limiting. The really cool thing was it was a banner day for catching Cabezon one of the rockfish delicacies off the Oregon Coast with more then enough to go around for all passengers. The Lingcod were a little slow to come by but certainly enough to keep the crew happy this morning.
Remember, offshore halibut begins this coming Thursday May 14th for a four week run Thursday through Saturday. After these four weeks the ODFW will evaluate catch rates and will be alerting us about other weekends in the spring fishery, which will be open. Windy but Some Awfully Good Fishing
Nine boats out on the fishing grounds for Tradewinds Charters Saturday morning and limits all the way around for all nine vessels on the rockfish side of the catch. The weather, which provided us, a beautiful sunny day but also 20 knot plus winds made the day quite choppy and being down where the lingcod live was difficult. None-the-less many of the Tradewinds boats had decent scores on the “toothy critters" and many of them were above the average size of what we typically catch this time of year. Crabbing which is becoming a Tradewinds exclusive fishery also went well even on this rather “cranky ocean" were in the pots at the end of the trips in very decent numbers. Most of the crabs we are seeing are just below the commercial legal size, which makes for good-sized sport crabs.
Remember, halibut season opens next Thursday May 14th for the offshore fishery and remember Tradewinds boats gives everyone on board a rod and reel and you are not forced to sit while others fish until your turn comes up like other charter operations. We also go out to the best places where the fish are normally in larger numbers where the bigger ones reside even if we use more fuel to get there. Call the office for more information.

Friday Fishing a Mixed Bag
Had two boats out on fishing trips today with mixed results from the two trips.
On the one boat out on the bottom fishing grounds we had limits around for passengers and crew but just a few Lingcod being brought aboard Friday morning. Crabbing recently has been somewhat on the slower side but today it did pick up somewhat in the shallow waters off Lincoln Beach.
The other boat was on a inshore halibut / bottom fishing trip. The first half of the trip they could not find any halibut biting on the inshore halibut grounds which limit you to fish inside 240 feet of water. When the wind picked up they moved inshore further and caught a limit of Lingcod and rockfish for all passengers. So no halibut but a limit catch of the bottom fish including lingcod.

Had a nice group down today on one of our boats from Columbia Sportswear with many of the guests from overseas out of the orient. Some of the company photographers were taking close up zoom shots of ‘the zipper" on a coat being worn. Lots of interviews took place on the boat and everyone including the Tradewinds staff on the boat was treated to Columbia Sportswear shirts, hats and wet weather gear. It was a fun morning out of Tradewinds Charters. It was pretty good fishing as well on this short trip.

Weather (Stealth) Fishing
On a day when the weather forecast was really nasty sounding one of our vessels with “stealth technology" snuck out under the weather radar and completed a fishing trip while the weather was not looking. There is a storm warning posted for winds in excess of 55 knots for the afternoon and driving rain on top of that. The boat is back in the harbor as we speak with a limit of rockfish without the “Weather Gods" knowing they were really out there. The weather waited until we got back in the harbor and now is beginning to unleash its furry on the Oregon Coast. The fishing boat obviously stayed very close to home and the ocean under some overcast drizzly skies proved the old adage “the calm before the storm" as it was almost a flat ocean. Not many Lingcod caught this morning but all had a good time.

It was still a good day with a good catch with the cod coming up a bit on the short side. The cod were there but just not biting on this Sunday as they probably just took part of the weekend off.

Oregon Coast Weather Is So Amazing
In a weather day for the ages we woke to a predicted bad weather day and two hours before departure time we were seeing 25 knot winds and a just under ten foot swell at the offshore data buoy. The first thought was no trips today as we had five boats scheduled to depart the harbor at 8am. When the light hit the water we didn’t see any of the 9 foot swell, only about a five-foot swell with some wind chop out past the first buoy. No Problems, Right? The fleet went over to the loading dock to pick up the folks and just before departure found out by last minute amazing chance that there was an uninspected restriction on the bar which means no 6-pack vessels or recreational craft could leave the harbor. So, we unloaded the smaller boats put everyone on the bigger boats loaded up the 6-7 walk-ups and off they went. Fifteen minutes later the Coast Guard lifted the restriction but by that time the 6-packs had lost their trips except for the whole boat charter late arriving walk-ups who sent out one of the 6-pack boats willing to go. The weather suddenly got beautiful with some sunshine; the wind went down to almost nothing and the seas almost flattened out. Two hours after the fishing boats got back the ocean turned totally upside down. What a morning! By the way did I mention boat limits for all of the hard working Tradewinds fleet?

Inshore Halibut Fishing Now Open
Interested in a great bargain and a chance to catch a halibut at the same time? If you are, the inshore halibut opened May 1st and will be open through October 31st. This season must be run on days that the offshore halibut fishery is closed which is normally Sunday through Wednesday but the great thing about these trips is that you can bottom fish on the way home. On the offshore halibut days you can only have halibut on board where the inshore fishery you can have any and all fish to go with your halibut. These trips are run as eight hour trips and go for $140.00 which is a great bargain from the offshore halibut cost. Though the inshore halibut fishery is not a lucrative as the offshore fishery is it is still a great bargain and day on the ocean waters. Call the Tradewinds office for reservations and more details as no one does it any better.

Beautiful Day & Heavy Currents
It was another 3-foot swell day with the sun shining brightly all morning long with very little if any wind on the ocean waters. Even with those three great qualities our fishing boats out this morning all reported a wicked current which of course limits or at least makes staying on the bottom for even the most experienced bottom fishermen difficult. Despite the one negative of the morning our skippers did there usual fine job of directing their crew how to fish in these type of currents and we had near limit catches of Lingcod on all vessels out this morning. The rockfish bite was a little bit slower then the past few days but limits were accounted for just the same with some hard work from the crew. Crabbing was slower this morning with about two crabs per person on an average this Friday morning.

What a flat ocean! The NOAA ocean report is reporting a 3-foot swell right now and hard to imagine it is that large! Our boats this morning had limits of rockfish with a great mixture of nice Cabezon and Lingcod to go along with it. It was just a great day to be on the world’s largest ocean. Marine Bag Limit Goes to Seven
Starting tomorrow May 1, saltwater sport fishers will be able to put one more groundfish in the marine fish daily bag – the highest bag limit since summer of 2005.
The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission last week approved a change to increase the bag limit from six marine fish to seven effective May 1. The marine fish bag includes rockfish and other species such as greenling and cabezon. The increased bag limit is based on a favorable stock assessment for black rockfish, the dominant species in the nearshore groundfish fishery.
Not included in the marine bag limit are groundfish species such as lingcod, which has its own limit of two per day, and flatfish, like sole, flounder and sanddabs, which have a 25-fish daily limit. Pacific halibut are not considered groundfish and have a separate bag limit and season.

Lingcod’s and more Lingcod’s
Another one of those days Wednesday morning where weird things happen from time to time on fishing trips. The boat limited on Lingcod’s but it was the rockfish that was hard to come by. The boat returned to the ocean over a dozen legal sized Lings and over 20-25 undersized Lings. The Lingcod were biting so fast that finding rockfish proved to be tough. The boat finally had to completely leave that area to get out of the Ling bite to find some rockfish. They finally found the rockfish bite to limit on those as well along with more lingcod biting that had to be thrown back. Crabbing was just OK today but nothing like the day before but the crabs we are finding are really big ones full of meat. Thursday and Friday sound like great weather days at the coast.

Today folks, it was a tough go. There was a big minus tide this morning that we shall use as the excuse of the day. We ended up limiting on the rockfish but it was a major struggle. Not much else bit either as far as the lingcod, etc. If they don’t bit you just keep adding more and more shrimp flies to your line to try and trick ‘em. Watch the report tomorrow, as things just will probably be red hot again. Go figure…

Nice Ocean / Confused Ocean
It started out like the ocean might lie down for this Saturday morning and then as it was forecasted turn a little “wiggly" by afternoon. Well as it sometimes does it turned a little “wiggly" mid-morning and had a confused look three hours or so into the trips. Tradewinds had four full loads out this morning on three large boats and one six-pack boat and even with the ocean turning somewhat upside down earlier then expected the experience of the skippers at Tradewinds once again paid off with some quick limits on the rockfish and some decent (conditions taken into effect) scores on the Lingcod and Cabazon. The current was just race horsing along this morning in anticipation of the ocean condition change and sitting on the bottom where the “bigger guys" live was difficult. Most of our boats stayed somewhat closer to home probably in anticipation of the ocean change so their passengers could get more fishing time in when the ocean was “more friendly" earlier in the morning. This decision saved the day as far as the rockfish limits went as it gave the folks the time needed to score big on the rockfish. Those that worked really hard at it scored a few Lingcod as well.

Fishermen Unfair To Fish Friday Morning
If it was a fishing derby out on the bottom fishing reefs Friday morning and if a referee was present he would of called it off in fairness (especially to the fish). There were a large number of Tradewinds anglers out this morning and they all won the prize with a limit of rockfish for all and better the one lingcod around per customer. Limited to the inshore reefs due to a quick running current this was a great score, which is more then most folks dream even on the best warm summer days. The reefs to the North of Depoe Bay out in front of Lincoln City are a little run for the Tradewinds boats but this is where the more consistent action seems to always be especially for fish variety rather then the reefs closer to home. Sounds like a decent weekend coming our way for your personal “fish derby".

Current Report:
No Boats Out Thursday
Pacific Halibut Season Opens May 1
No boats out this morning from the harbor. It was a rainy morning but all is suppose to improve by afternoon time and Friday into the weekend sounds like nice ocean conditions.
The central coast fishery, from Cape Falcon just north of Manzanita to Humbug Mountain near Port Orford, is a very popular fishery among Oregonians. Anglers may fish inside the 40-fathom line (defined by waypoints) seven days per week, through Oct. 31 or until the 14,407-pound quota is met. The all-depth dates for the spring season are May 14-16, 21-23, 28-30; and June 4-6. Backup dates (if sufficient quota remains) are June 18-20, and July 2-4, 16-18 and 30-31. The catch limit is 124,261 pounds. The summer season opens Aug. 7 with scheduled open days every other Friday through Sunday until the total area all-depth catch limit of 165,681 pounds is taken or October 31, which ever occurs first.

Current Report:
Increased bag limit offers more angler opportunities
Starting May 1, saltwater sport fishers will be able to put one more groundfish in the marine fish daily bag – the highest bag limit since summer of 2005.
Pacific halibut are not considered groundfish and have a separate bag limit and season

Lots of Wind Chop
One boat ventured out Wednesday morning only to come back in after giving it a try for an hour. Not much of a swell this morning but with 20 knots of wind, which blew most of the night that produced a nasty wind chop, it made fishing difficult at best. All agreed on the boat including the skipper that coming back in and giving it another try on a better day was the best course of action.

Current Report:
Gloomy day & NO boats out today !!
No boats out fishing from the harbor Tuesday morning. It was a foggy morning and a little breezy on the waters and not much interest in fishing today. The weather for the ocean waters sounds really good all the way through the weekend so if some good bottom fishing is on your mind now is a good time.

Current Report:
Lingcods & Cabezons
Another good day on the "pond" with two boats out and the usual rockfish limit was gathered in by the two boats but it was a great day for the Lingcod and the Cabezon catch on Monday morning. It was also one of those days where we were catching handfuls of undersize Lingcod in the 20 inch range where they have to be 22 inches in order to keep in possession. With the valley heating up into the low 80's we had a low level fog bank out on the waters today. It was nothing that limited much visibility but made the day a little on the gloomy side.
Date: Sunday, April 19, 2009 at 16:16:58
Current Report: One boat out on the fishing reefs Sunday morning and what a beautiful ocean it was with blue skies, calm winds and less then a six-foot swell. Usually when you get weather like that you have good fishing and such was the case Sunday morning. Limits of rockfish hit the filet tables with a nice assortment of lingcod as well came back in the fish baskets. Sorry, I have no word on the crab catch on Sunday or even if it was a crab combo but the crab catch over the past month has really picked up from what it was in the winter months. It should remain good through the summer months. Don’t forget the halibut season opens next month so give us at Tradewinds a call and make that reservation now if you are interested in going offshore for halibut which opens up Thursday, May 14th. Also remember about that 3-fish limit on the Coho salmon as reservations are coming in already for that anticipated fishery set to open Saturday, June 20th.
Date: Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 12:57:11
Current Report: Oh what a nice day it is! The sunshine was up early on Saturday and the four boats out fishing for Tradewinds left under these same sunny skies, calm winds and better seas then predicted. The good conditions proved fruitful for the fishing success of the day producing limits of rockfish in good variety and a nice assortment of Lingcod from the Lingcod Capital of the Central Oregon Coast. Those boats that had crab combos also came back with a nice catch of Dungeness crab. The ocean forecast is a nice one all the way through next Wednesday so if you can break away from work for one day it is a great time this Spring to get down here and have some good success with that fishing pole.
Date: Friday, April 17, 2009 at 19:06:11
Current Report: Fishing was excellent today and the crabbing was even better! One boat out today on a fair ocean but a little rain was coming down most of the morning. Saturday will be a possible repeat of Friday minus the rain and then a good stretch of weather is forecasted well into next week with calm seas and light winds with no rain in sight (so they say?). Back to the catching report! Had a nice limit catch of rockfish along with the above average catch of Lingcod this time of year and the “crabbies" were really on the bite today even with a shorter soak time then usual. We are less then four weeks away from the start of the offshore halibut season and you can even do the inshore halibut fishing starting May 1st. The inshore halibut fishing is a fun trip as unlike the offshore halibut fishing you can bottom fish on the way home. We are getting many reservations already for the Coho salmon season opening June 20th as the 3-fish limit obviously has many folks excited. Plan you summer around a fishing trip out of Tradewinds Charters.

Current Report: Into a stretch right now of some bad weather since Sunday and looks like maybe Wednesday things might begin to improve. We are firmly into the springtime so some longer stretches of good weather should be just around the corner. We have had great fishing when we have been able to get out so watch that weather report. Halibut season is only a month away so get on that phone and take your choice of five Tradewinds boats who will take you out to the halibut grounds for one of the big flat fish. If you are a salmon enthusiast get set for that season coming June 20th and the 3-fish limit. Remember also about the Albacore fishery starting in July, which over the past three seasons has become increasingly popular when one thinks of those 20-30 pound fish. Throw in a few Dungeness crab and this spring and summer is mighty tempting. It is going to be a great year at Tradewinds Charters.
Date: Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 20:00:39
Current Report: Started out with some good fishing Saturday morning only to see the winds come in a bit earlier then predicted and all the boats were back in before noon. It was a good catch day however as we did get rockfish limits and quite a number of Lingcod bit the hooks as well before the winds hit the waters. Yes, if you were wondering the crabs always bite in the choppy waters. Sounds like some not-so-good weather coming our way for a few days so there is not a better time to alert the folks in “Tradewinds Country" about the upcoming halibut and summer seasons. Remember the halibut season opens in May with an inshore season beginning May 1st and the offshore season Thursday through Saturday’s opening up May 14th. Don’t be caught drooling about that salmon 3 fish–a-day opener on June 20th without that summer Tradewinds reservation. Make your summer plans early, as chances are there will be a rush for spots on the boats with that kind of a daily limit. Predictions are that there should be a bunch of fish out there to catch. Lots of calls and emails already about the Albacore tuna and should start to see them after the 1st of July.
Date: Friday, April 10, 2009 at 16:08:35
Current Report: What a great salmon season on the horizon. Yes, we did get a season and it will be a great one. 110,000 fish quota beginning on June 20th and running through August 31st. To make it that much better, it will be a 3-fish limit. That has not happened since the early 1980's. There will also be an additional season in September and to make things even better the Chinook will be back in our quota system beginning in March of 2010. Things could not be any better. Give the Tradewinds office a call for reservations. Had two boats out Friday morning and limits were the word of the day with not only rockfish limits but close to limits on the Lingcod as well. Also, it was a very good morning for crab catching as the pots were in catching mode.

Current Report: The sun is shining, most of the spring breaks are over and spring finally looks like it is peeping its head around the corner. Possibly a little rain one day late in the week but other then that nice ocean conditions for fishing trips. The crabbing has improved every trip as we are averaging around 4-6 crabs per person. Some nice Lingcod and Cabezon have been coming in lately as the Tradewinds boats show great variety in their catch. We even caught one octopus! If you are visiting the Depoe Bay area try to be on the Depoe Bay Bridge around the time the boats come in from their fishing adventures and watch the fish being filleted and the crabs being cooked. It is quite a show and there is not a better place in Depoe Bay to watch the boats go in and out of the Depoe Bay harbor.
Date: Friday, April 3, 2009 at 18:05:56
Current Report: Well the good news is that the weather forecast for this weekend was wrong. That normally means bad weather coming but in this instance the bad weather predicted is going to turn into a pretty nice weekend. We are hopeful for a nice Saturday morning for the fishing trips but certainly by afternoon the ocean should be in great shape for cruising and afternoon fishing. The offshore Lingcod trips are over until October 1st but there are many of those same “critters" (mostly a little smaller) on the inshore reefs that we fish all year around. However, there are some “big boys" on the inshore reefs as well and if you disbelieve me take a look at the monster caught last year displayed on the Tradewinds “Customer’s Catch" link. Besides that folks, the crabs are getting hungrier by the week as the past three weeks the crabbing is really heating up at those very well protected secret Tradewinds crabbing holes out there that very few know about. The weather sounds much better into the middle of next week except for possibly one day so make those springtime fishing reservations.
Date: Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 09:47:49
Current Report: The boats ventured out Tuesday morning on a four-foot swell, which under normal conditions is a fantastic ocean, but the wind was blowing and a short nasty chop developed about an hour into the trip which made things more difficult as the trip went on. The two Tradewinds boats toughed it out however and turned a rather “cranky ocean" into a positive as the fishing improved as the ocean deteriorated and you should have seen the great catch of rockfish and Lingcod back at the fillet tables. To make things even better for those who braved the choppy conditions the crabs liked the ocean crankiness as well and a great catch of Dungeness crab were boiling in the cooking pots just below the Depoe Bay bridge at the Tradewinds filet tables. Wednesday morning was a different story with the same wind and wind chop accompanied by a nine-foot swell. It was a No-Go! Sounds a little “iffy" for the next few days with a hopeful break in the weather for the weekend.
Date: Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 09:02:37
Current Report: This weekend has been a total blowout because of the weather as the ocean has been very rough. Springtime weather brings us quick changes however and Monday morning through Tuesday look like great days for fishing as the seas will be relatively calm and the winds light with no rain in the forecast. The spring breaks are still with us so the fishing has been great so come down and join us. Remember, Tuesday will be the final day to fish the offshore bottom fishing reefs for the “target Lingcod trips" so call the office and book your trip before it closes Tuesday not to re-open until October 1st. Tradewinds has always had the reputation for clean boats, well managed tackle and friendly skippers. Come check us out!!
Date: Friday, March 27, 2009 at 20:33:26
Current Report: Great fishing out of Tradewinds Charters the past several days leading up to a weekend where weather might become a factor. The ocean was a little “cranky" on Thursday morning at departure time but it was one of those days when the ocean just got better and better as the morning went on. The three boats out had great trips and the Lingcod caught just added to the usual great catch of rockfish. The crab catching is also heating up so the opportunity to take home some great tasting Dungeness crab is well worth the trip. Friday was just a beautiful day with near flat conditions for four Tradewinds boats of which two had offshore “target Lingcod" trips. When the offshore Lingcod boats come in being on the bridge taking pictures of these 25+ pound fish creates almost a magical force to book a trip. Seriously these trips have become very popular and wait till you use the top of the line gear our skippers use on these trips. Remember, April 1st the offshore season closes until October 1st which means Tuesday next is the last day.
Date: Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at 15:33:59
Current Report: We have had boats out every morning the past three days even though the conditions have not been perfect we have had great success on the inshore bottom fishing reefs. It has been a little wet some of the time and a little windy part of the time but the skippers at Tradewinds know where to go on these type of days and find those secret spots so they can get the job done. It must be those special jigs along with that special color of artificial bait the fish seem to like. The rockfish were biting and we are still getting a fair amount of those Lingcod in the boats to make things even better. Just to make a fishing trip seem even more inviting the Dungeness crab are on the bite as well. One boat brought home around sixty for the boat the other day but make sure you take along a dollar bill in case you forget you crab measurer.
Date: Monday, March 23, 2009 at 13:01:20
Current Report: Monday was one of those strange Spring mornings. The forecast was terrible with gale warnings posted but when morning came the barometer was up off the charts and the boat snuck out to some great onshore weather and also by the way some great catching of Pacific bottom fish. It was one of those mornings where you could almost see the wind lines offshore but they stayed offshore until the Tradewinds boat had caught their limit. As sometimes happens pretty much as soon as the fishing boat hit the harbor and the white fish filets were being trimmed at the docks the winds came. GREAT TIME - GREAT CATCH!!
Date: Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 14:38:45
Current Report: What a great day of fishing out of Tradewinds Saturday morning!! Two boats fished inside and two boats headed offshore for the “target Lingcod" trips. With a threatening forecast that never materialized the inside boats limited as normal on the rockfish and had very good success also on the Lingcod’s as well. There were many youngsters on the trips who were thrilled with their catch. The “attention getter" of the day however came once again from those offshore boats that fished the 400-foot “Processor Reef" twelve miles out from Depoe Bay and came back with quite the assortment of those big “toothy critters". The folks on the bridge watching the fish carried up to the filet tables were at the office getting information on the offshore trips. Remember the offshore season closes April 1st and not to re-open until October 1st. A great day of fishing out of Tradewinds Charters.
Date: Friday, March 20, 2009 at 12:28:46
Current Report: One boat out from the Tradewinds fleet on Friday, the first boat out from Depoe Bay in several days and they had a great fishing trip with near limits of Lingcod and rockfish on the trip. The ocean was a bit on the wet side and then it became a little on the windy side towards the end of the trip but the folks had a great time. Interesting why these fish bite so hard on these semi-cranky oceans!
Date: Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 09:31:39
Current Report: This is my second posting of the day but you folks have to hear this NEWS. Two of the three options for the summer salmon season and it will be one of these two are calling for the salmon quota to be between 94,000 and 117,000 fish quota. Wow!!! One of those options is calling for a three fish limit of all things. Sounds like how fishing was in the 1980’s. We will know for sure April 15th what the summer regulations will be. Either way make plans for summer salmon fishing with Tradewinds and get those cooking recipes out. There is also serious talk of an offshore Yellowtail fishery. More on that as information becomes available.
Date: Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 07:38:23
Current Report: The ocean through Friday looks to be moderately fit for ocean activates. The swell will be in the eight-foot range and there will be some windy times especially in the afternoon hours. Fishing the next three days will be day-to-day but appears like it could be a do-able thing with whale watching in the afternoon hours again a cruise time decision. Fishing has been terrific especially for the Lingcod as most occasions the rockfish are easy to come by. The weekend from the forecast does not look all that encouraging from three days out so if you want to try your hand at some great bottom fishing, now through Friday looks like the days. Tradewinds has the best-equipped boats and knowledgeable skippers to make your trip a success.
Date: Monday, March 16, 2009 at 06:31:43
Current Report: Update on the weather for you folks. Sounds like the ocean will be straightening out by possibly Thursday and this next weekend the start of Spring breaks might be looking good. Bottom fishing has been excellent so hopefully the sunshine will be returning to the Depoe Bay area and the ocean will flatten out. There are lots of whales out there also for you whale watch enthusiast so as springtime hits the Oregon Coast this weekend fishing, especially Lingcod fishing and whale watching should be at a peak. Remember also, Dungeness crab season is open and a few are beginning to show up in the shallower areas where we can get to them. Come down and join us.
Date: Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 13:26:59
Current Report: We are currently into a bad weather pattern for a few days, which might last into the first part of next week. Up till now the fishing has been fantastic with our boats going offshore (deep water Lingcod fishing) have been limiting with Lings in the 15 to 35 pound range. Beautiful fis!! They also have been bringing back inshore to the filet tables some great looking Yellowtail rockfish to round out the day. Remember that this fishery closes April 1st and will not re-open until October 1st.
The inshore bottom fishing has also been nothing short of terrific with limits of both the rockfish and Lingcod coming back to the docks on most trips.
We expect a great salmon season for the Coho specie this summer with those dates becoming available after April 15th. Keep in touch with this website for updates on a regular basis this year.
Date: Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 08:27:51
Current Report: The season has started for sea bass and ling cod and has been excellent. Our specialty ling cod target trip has produced limits of 15 to 40 pound lings for everyone. Remember, this closes April 1 until fall. Halibut dates are set now at May 14-16, 21-23,28-30. June 4-6, back up 18-20. Also July 2-4, 16-18, and 30-31. We still have openings but please book soon as filling up. No fuel surcharge this year and coupons do apply. Quit wishin-go fishin!
